Unique 19th Century English Hunting Ax with Two Sheaths.

Lot # 1001 (Sale Order: 1 of 448)      

Stamped on right side of blade with crown "VR" and maker "W. THORNHILL & CO. LONDON". The crescent blade is 4" across the edge; the head formed in one piece with a hammer opposite the blade. The shaft extending 11" from the head in one piece of steel. The grip if exotic wood, appears to be rosewood attached to the shaft with two steel rods. CONDITION: Blade shows use but no abuse. Some chips in edge are minor. Checkered grip in good condition. Ax appears to retain considerable original polish. Accompanying the ax are two leather sheaths with brass buckles. Condition of sheaths and ax is very good. A unique accessory item for the collector of 19th century hunting weapons. Blade Length: 4" Overall Length: 15" Condition: Dimensions:

The grip of wood wrapped with alternating copper and steel wire with Turk's heads, is fluted throughout. CONDITION: Blade is polished over pits with some pitting, mostly at extreme tip. A Remarkable and Massive Cannoneer's Stiletto, Italian, Circa 1600?

The 18" quadrangular blade carries various marks to gauge powder and must have been used with one of the largest cannons in Renaissance Europe. The blade of characteristic form stamped with two indecipherable maker's marks at forte. The writhen quillons are superbly forged and decorated with slashes. The pommel of a turban shape en suite with the quillons. The fluted wire wrapped grip with two all steel Turk's heads, displaying remarkable quality throughout. CONDITION: Blade is mostly grey polished metal with clean pitting at ricasso. Quillons are polished but not overly pitted, showing good exfoliation. Pommel exfoliated at top indicating forging rather than casting. Grip is in superb condition throughout. The grip wrapped with alternating brass and steel wire in a most attractive pattern. Brass Turk's heads. CONDITION: Blade is polished with some pitting. CONDITION: Blade, polished bright over very old pitting. Spring mechanism very strong and works correctly. The quillon showing some exfoliation and considerable age. 9" blade finely forged with punch decoration on flattened ricasso. The iron hilt, once blued, with downturned quillons and large finger ring. A pommel of balluster form, once blued. Spirally fluted grip bound with copper and silver wire. CONDITION: The blade is polished bright with no real pitting remaining. Quillons appear to retain traces of original bluing, as does pommel. The most remarkable feature of this dagger is the grip, which has the most elaborate treatment of alternating braided copper and silver wire with silver wire Turk's heads. The head measures 25" in length, pierced blade 9 - 1/4" across, central spike 15 - 1/2" with a 2 - 3/4" fluke. Halberd is in unusually fine condition with minor pitting and only minor exfoliation. Straps are intact. 93" overall. CONDITION: Shaft is possibly the original with blackened finish and some 16th century carving just below one strap. Old museum number 5869. A very handsome piece still retaining what appears to be an early faceted metal ferrule at base. Lot of 2: Saxon Miner's Guild Axe, with a Carved and Scrimshawed Cow Bone Powder Flask, Axe Dated 16

Lot consists of (A) Saxon miner's guild axe with a 9" blade of characteristic form including cut out cross and pierced holes with its original brass tip. Stamped indistinctly PH. Walnut shaft inlaid throughout its length with scrimshawed stag horn and bone panels depicting tulips, daisies, the crossed hammers of the guild, and Christ on the cross. CONDITION: Head is patinated. Shaft missing two pellets but otherwise intact. (B) Flask measures 10 - 1/4" overall with a hunting scene of a gentleman with bow and arrow firing at a fleeing boar. CONDITION: Good condition with some deterioration but excellent scene and original forged iron carrying rings. These axes were carried by minrs in processions when they marched throughout the city for various pageants. They are attractive and an essential piece for any collection of early European weapons. CONDITION: Patinated overall. (B) is an Italian hunting knife, circa 1800, possibly earlier with 9" heavy blade and elaborate brass bound horn grip. The blade with etching at fork of a cockrel and an expanded flower. The brass bound fluted horn grip with slight worm damage. CONDITION: Good, mostly bright metal. ITALIAN MVSN "BLACKSHIRTS" MODEL 1937 DAGGER.

Lot # 1023 (Sale Order: 23 of 448)      

Made for Italy's MVSN "Voluntary Militia for National Security", commonly referred to as the Blackshirts. The Blackshirts were a paramilitary wing of the Italian National Fascist Party who were easily identified by their black uniforms. They used methods of violence and intimidation against many of Mussolini's opponents. In 1940 the MVSN provided Italy with 340,000 first line troops, but were integrated in the Royal Italian Army and disbanded in 1943. This blade is nickel plated and shows the MVSN symbol inlaid on the handle with an eagles head pommel and quillon. The handle is made of aluminum with synthetic plates on either side, which are held in by a single brass screw. Complete with correct scabbard. Hanger is not present. CONDITION: Blade is in excellent condition with only small areas of spotting on either side of the ricasso. Aluminum handle shows small scattered handling marks all around. Synthetic grip plates are in excellent condition. The scabbard is in excellent condition retain 90%+ of its original black painted finish. Paint has minor loss in small areas scattered around scabbard. Finial on drag is missing. Overall this is an excellent example of an Italian Model 1937 Blackshirt's dagger. (A) Polish dagger with a nickel-plated blade marked with a Polish eagle and an unknown emblem, with light runner and scattered marks. Brass fittings show heavy patina and the wire-wrapped grips retains approximately 50% of its covering over the wooden core. A portepee with moderate wear is attached. Bronze plated steel scabbard with brass fittings show heavy patina, with a chrome Polish eagle attached near the throat. CONDITION: It is unknown as to when this dagger was issued. Blade is near mint and fittings, grip, and scabbard are good. Overall very good. (B) Yugoslavian Air Force dagger with an unmarked nickel-plated blade with light marks throughout and light freckling. Nickel-plated brass fittings 90-95% of their finish, and the wire-wrapped grip retains approximately 70% of it blue leather covering. A worn portepee is attached. Scabbard retains 75-80% of its blue leather covering, and the nickel-plated steel and brass fittings retain apporximately 80% of their finish, with moderate freckling on the throat fitting. A brass flying emblem is attached to the throat fitting. CONDITION: It is unknown as to when this dagger was issued. Dagger is very good to excellent, and the scabbard is very good.
