Navajo Morgan Silver Dollar Squash Blossom c. 1940

Lot # 1 (Sale Order: 1 of 503)

This is an exceptional circa 1930-1940’s Navajo Native American Indian Morgan Silver Dollar and Buffalo Nickel massive squash blossom necklace. The necklace consists of eight blossom Morgan Silver Dollar’s from circa 1883-1891 which have been rounded slightly but have retained the beautiful detail of the original coins. Also shown on this necklace are 64 rounded concho / concha beads with each being made of two original Buffalo Nickel coins dating from 1928-1937 for a total of 128 coins (again they have been slightly rounded but retains the beautiful detail of the original coins). The necklace has been strung on an early sterling silver chain strand with hand made large clasp. The naja squash pendant is of a nice large size and has been constructed of sand cast sterling silver in a heavy and traditional design which is accented by four gorgeous gem quality bright blue turquoise polished cabochons. This is the most impressive large Morgan Silver Dollar Squash Blossom necklace that has been offered for sale publicly and is a very rare example as most are shown with Mercury Dimes of a smaller size instead of the much more impressive Buffalo Nickels. The piece is believed to have been made in the late 1930’s to 1940’s when these coins were readily available. Provenance: From a large Native American and Cowboy collection in Billings, Montana. The necklace features the following Morgan Silver Dollar coins: 1883-P, 1883-P, 1884-S, 1886-O, 1888-O, 1890-O, 1891-P, 1891-O. Measures overall 33” long circumference with a naja pendant that is 3.25”x2 5/8”. The necklace weighs overall 865 grams.

Earliest Known Photograph of Pawnee Bill 1800-1900

Lot # 3 (Sale Order: 3 of 503)

This is an original authentic photograph of Major Gordon William Lillie, known professionally as Pawnee Bill and is thought to be the earliest known photograph of Pawnee to exist. The photograph shows Pawnee Bill wearing his iconic cowboy hat with his infamous mustache and sporting an excellent Native American Indian beaded vest. Pawnee Bill is also wearing tall riding boots and is holding a quirt / bull whip. The photograph is accompanied by excellent provenance as it is displayed in the original Pawnee Bill’s Buffalo Ranch Pawnee, Oklahoma envelope that shows a calling Great American Bison along the center and has a Pawnee Bill’s Indian Trading Post Old Town Pawnee, Oklahoma mail stamp. The envelope is addressed to Dot Vernon of R2 BOX 390 of Watsonville, California. Along with the envelope is a smaller envelope from Pawnee Bill’s Indian Trading Post U.S. Highway No. 64 Pawnee Oklahoma that shows a photograph of Buffalo roaming on the lawn of his trading post with Pawnee Bill on horseback on one side and two Indian Chief’s on the other. This envelope is addressed to Dot Vernon also. All of these pieces are found in a folder marked on the outside, “Dot Vernon was born in Colorado in 1895 was with Pawnee Bill in 1908. Said she was 12 yrs old then so birthday must have been in the late Fall.” Provenance: The piece comes from the personal collection of Dot Vernon. Dot Vernon performed with the Miller’s 101 Ranch Wild West Show, Buffalo Bill’s Wild West Show, Pawnee Bill’s Wild West Show and more. Dot Vernon Bolton, once called “Queen of the Cowgirls” got her start in the Western Show world when she was 12 years old when her family sent her with Pawnee Bill with his Wild West Show, as they were family friends. She later went to England with the 101 Ranch Wild West Show and gave a command performance for the English Royal Family presumably including King George V. She then later toured the US with Barnum & Bailey’s Circus and also with Buffalo Bill’s Wild West Show. This is truly a historic and rare original photograph and is considered to be the earliest known example ever to be brought to public purchase showing a young Pawnee Bill, possibly in one of his first performances. Documented photographs showing the young Pawnee Bill have been shown of him in earlier years, but not as early as this example, such as the cabinet card sold by Heritage Auctions Lot #43077 in their 1/23/2009 sale, the photograph on the site Knightstemplar.org Brother “Pawnee Bill” Frontiersman and Showman, and Legends of America site. The original photograph measures 6 5/8” by 9 1/8”. Large envelope is 8.25”x10.5” and smaller envelope is 4.25”x9.5”. The folder is 7.75”x12.75”.

Lot # 3a (Sale Order: 4 of 503)

The lot features an original photograph of the entire Millers Brothers 101 Ranch Wild West Show troop from circa 1900’s. In the second row at the very center a young Pawnee Bill (Gordon William Lillie) can been seen wearing his famous hat with his iconic mustache visible. The photograph includes 29 Cowboys, Cowgirls, and Native American Indians. Such wonderfully renowned individuals who most likely are represented in this image and performed with the 101 Ranch Wild West Show are Lillian Smith (performing as “Pricess Wenona”), Bill Pickett, Bessie Herberg, Bee Ho Gray, Tom Mix, Jack Hoxie, Mexican Joe, Ross Hettan, Buffalo Bill Cody (William Frederick “Buffalo Bill” Cody), Pawnee Bill, Zach Mulhall, Lucille Milhall, Ken Maynard, Hoot Gibson, Buck Jones, Chester Byers, Chief Iron Tails, Milt, Hinkle, Billy Lorette, Luka Chkhartishvila (Princes Lucca), Art Acord, and occasionally Will Rogers (who was never formerly employed with the 101 Ranch, but was documented visiting many of his friends and having trick roping contests and events). The photograph shows numerous performers posing for an unknown photographer. Provenance: The piece comes from the personal collection of Dot Vernon. Dot Vernon performed with the Miller’s 101 Ranch Wild West Show and is present in this photograph. The 101 Ranch Wild West Show was founded by Colonel George Washington Miller, a Confederate Army veteran of the Civil War, after being motivated by his dear friend and neighbor Major Gordon W. Lillie, also known as Pawnee Bill. Pawnee Bill helped Miller start the show and performed in many of his acts. Dot Vernon was introduced to the Miller 101 by Pawnee Bill, with both being found in this photograph. The photograph comes in an envelope hand written on the front “101 Ranch / 101 RANCH”. This is truly a fantastic original authentic example and has never been seen by the public. Photograph measures 8”x10”. Original Miller Bros 101 Ranch Wild West Show photographs are exceedingly rare with few examples being brought to sale, such as the photograph sold by Brian Lebel's Old West Auction for $5,900. This photograph is thought to have been one of the earliest photographs known to exist of the Miller 101 Ranch Wild West show. The photograph originally came with the 101 Ranch marked folder, which is no longer present (but a photograph is shown for reference).
