This rifle is accompanied by a Cody Firearms Museum record (not factory letter) dated March 2010 that lists this rifle as having the following: 1) a Helm pattern buttplate 2) Schuetzen set trigger (DSTs), 3) checkered pistol grip stock, 4) no rear sight 5) a midrange tang sight, 6) Dutch pattern buttstock, 7) a spur lever. Currently the rifle is fitted with a Winchester Model 1885 tang mounted rear sight and a Winchester globe front sight. The lower tang is marked with the Winchester patent dates behind the second trigger, and the serial number (81818) is engraved in front of the rear stock screw. It was fitted with an extra fancy pistol grip buttstock with a Winchester hard rubber grip cap and the noted buttplate. It also has a matching fancy walnut checkered forend that has been fitted with a Winchester first pattern (tuning fork) palm rest. The beautiful rifle has a color casehardened receiver, loading lever, buttplate and breech block, and an all blued barrel and hammer.

The checkering is in fine condition with nice distinct checkered diamonds visible on the sides and a little wear across the tops of the checkering. Mechanically excellent.

Ulrich Engraved/Inlaid Z. Grey's Winchester Model 1895 Rifle

Lot # 1015 (Sale Order: 16 of 951)

Monumental, Incredibly Historic and Well-Documented John Ulrich Signed Masterpiece: Factory No. 1 Engraved, Gold Inlaid and Carved Winchester Deluxe Model 1895 Takedown Lever Action Rifle Inscribed to Famed Western Author Zane Grey

Manufactured in 1915, this is a stunning example of fine Winchester craftsmanship and testament to John Ulrich’s superb skills as a master engraver. The accompanying Buffalo Bill Historical Center letter addressed to noted firearms expert and dealer Herb Glass indicates that although “the serial is too high for us to authenticate the piece from original factory production records,” Winchester Museum Curator Richard Rattenbury firmly believed this rifle to be a factory original as it is in “identical quality and style” of known factory embellished Model 1895s, some of which were a part of the Winchester Museum collection, and pointed out that the rifle was identified as an Ulrich original by Winchester expert and author George Madis in “The Winchester Book” on page 472. Madis noted the special attention given to the magazine and hammer engraving. Madis concluded, “Catalogs advised that magazines of the Model 95 were not ornamented, but here is an exception. Ulrich often did a small amount of engraving on the hammer of the more expensive engraving jobs.” According to Madis a standard Model 95 listed for $32.50, but the added extras on this particular rifle built and embellished for Zane Grey cost an astonishing $335.00 or about $8,476.00 in today’s money! The rifle is also pictured and identified in R.L. Wilson’s book “Winchester: An American Legend” on page 106. The rifle features a factory No. 1 engraving and gold inlay pattern. A deer, mountain lion and grizzly bear are inlaid in solid gold on the receiver. The receiver, upper tang, bolt, takedown collar, hammer, lever, barrel breech and buttplate are engraved with arabesque scrollwork and artistic borders. The scrollwork and engraved borders are accented with numerous gold inlaid borders. A gold inlaid band and an engraved scallop band appear on the barrel at the muzzle. John Ulrich has signed his masterpiece with his “JU” initials on the lower tang. The rifle is fitted with a blade front sight, folding two leaf rear sight and Lyman receiver sight. The receiver sight is inscribed with the original owner’s name in gold: “ZANE GREY.” The deluxe, fancy grade walnut stock and forearm feature Winchester Style B, relief carved scroll and vine designs with a highly polished piano finish. Famed six gun shooter Elmer Keith witnessed this rifle being used by Zane Grey as documented in his autobiography “Keith” on page 170: “I believe I showed Zane Grey the first long-range pistol shooting he’d ever witnessed. He had Bob Carney and Romer Grey shooting at a rock at 400 yards with a .30-06 Model 1895 Winchester that had Z.G. inlaid in gold on the left side of the receiver. They couldn't seem to hit it. So I lay down with my back to a log, took my old 7 1/2 –inch .44 Special single-action Colt, and hit the rock repeatedly.” Zane Grey (1872-1939) was an American author best known for his adventure novels and short stories that romanticized the Western frontier. First published in 1912, “Riders of the Purple Sage” was Grey’s bestselling novel that played a significant role in shaping the Western genre formula and critics have called the book "the most popular western novel of all time." As for Grey himself, he has earned the title “the greatest and most prolific storyteller of the American West.” His literary works have been adapted into 112 films and episodes for three television series, including the “Dick Powell’s Zane Grey Theater,” which ran on CBS from 1956 to 1961. He was an avid fisherman who held numerous records of the day, pioneered the fishing of sailfish, assisting in establishing deep sea fishing off the coast of New South Wales, Australia, traveled to Tahiti, Nova Scotia, Australia and New Zealand to indulge his fishing hobby, co-founded the Porpoise Club in an attempt to popularize the hunting of dolphins and porpoises, and invented the hookless bait known as the teaser that is still used today. Grey's son claimed that his father fished on average 300 days a year throughout his life.

Class: Curio & Relic Long Gun

Excellent, retaining 95% plus bright original high polish blue finish overall, the majority of the finish loss appears at the takedown joint which is a mottled patina. The engraving is crisp. The wood is exceptionally fine with some minor handling marks, numerous scattered scratches, most of the original varnish remaining and a crisp carving. Mechanically excellent. Factory engraved, gold inlaid Winchesters rank are the pinnacle of 19th century fine arms collecting. This rifles beauty, importance and rarity are further compounded by its original owner, American icon, Zane Grey. An absolute National

Lot # 1017 (Sale Order: 18 of 951)

Winchester Model 1866 Lever Action Saddle Ring Carbine

Manufactured in 1876 as a third model with the serial number stamped in block numerals behind the trigger. The sights consists of a blade integral to the front barrel band and two leaf rear sight. A saddle ring is mounted on the left side of the brass receiver. The bolt remains in its original rimfire configuration. The carbine stock is fitted with a trapdoor brass buttplate. Comes with a three piece cleaning rod. The '66 secured Winchester's place in the annals of the West and launched a long line of successful Winchester lever actions that remain popular to this day and still retain the basic form of the '66.

Class: Antique

Very good plus. The barrel and magazine tube have a smooth dark brown patina. The brass has an attractive patina. The wood is also very good with a couple hairline stress cracks at the tangs and minor-moderate dings and scratches. The lever lacks tension to remain parallel with the lower tang, otherwise mechanically excellent.

Lot # 1018 (Sale Order: 19 of 951)

Winchester Model 1886 33 W.C.F. Lever Action Sporting Rifle

This Winchester Model 1886 Sporting Rifle has a 24-inch round light weight barrel with full length magazine and is fitted with the Lyman Hunting front sight and shotgun buttplate that were standard on Model 1886 rifles chambered for the .33 W.C.F. cartridge. In addition to the Lyman Hunting front sight, the rifle has a Lyman folding combination rear sight mounted on the receiver tang and standard buckhorn, sporting style rear sight on the barrel. The rifle has a straight grain, American walnut stock and forearm. The stock has a black, checkered, hard rubber shotgun buttplate embossed with the oval "Winchester Repeating Arms" logo. The barrel, magazine, forearm cap and receiver are blue, and the hammer and lever are color casehardened. The top of the barrel is roll-stamped: "MANUFACTURED BY THE/-WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS CO. NEW HAVEN. CONN. U.S.A.-" in two lines ahead of the rear sight. "33 W.C.F." is roll-stamped on the top of the barrel between the rear sight and the receiver. The lower receiver tang is stamped with the 1884 and 1885 patent dates behind the trigger and has the serial number stamped in script numerals behind the rear trigger guard screw.

Class: Curio & Relic Long Gun

Fine. The rifle retains 50% of the original blue and color casehardened finish overall. Most of the blue finish is present of the barrel and magazine while the barrel band and forearm cap show handling wear. The barrel legend and caliber markings are sharp. The blue finish on the receiver is thin on the bottom edges and lower tang and has faded to a silver gray patina. The top and sides of the receiver retain most of the blue finish with some light scratches and handling marks. The case colors on the hammer, trigger and lever have faded to a silver-gray patina. The stock and forearm are in good overall condition with moderate handling wear. The hard rubber buttplate has very minor handling marks. This is a solid example of a Winchester Model 1886 .33 W.C.F. Lever Action Rifle.

Special Order Factory Engraved Winchester Deluxe '94 Rifle,Scope

Lot # 1021 (Sale Order: 22 of 951)

Magnificent Documented, Special Order, Factory Engraved Winchester Deluxe Model 1894 Takedown Rifle with D Carved Wood, Sidle Telescopic Sight and Factory Letter

This Special order, factory engraved Winchester Model 1894 Deluxe Takedown Rifle with rare John W. Sidle telescopic sight and Cody Firearm Museum letter. The Cody letter describes this Model 1894 as: "Rifle, 30 caliber, 1/2 octagon barrel, Plain trigger, Checkered stock, Pistol grip, Oil finish, Lyman Wind Gauge and Sporting rear sights, 1/2 magazine, Take down, Screw eyes, Vignette #6 on lefthand side, Engraved $5.00 on right side, Engraving $14" and "Carved Style D, $10.00". The letter further states this rifle was shipped from the Winchester warehouse on April 25, 1901. The rifle features factory engraving on the forearm cap, receiver, bolt, takedown collar, barrel and buttplate heel. Although listed as Factory #6 engraving in the Cody letter, the engraving is nearly identical to the Winchester #5 engraving illustrated and described in the October 1897 edition of Winchester "HIGHLY FINISHED ARMS" reproduced on page 225 of "WINCHESTER ENGRAVING" by R.L. Wilson. "HIGHLY FINISHED ARMS" describes #5 engraving as: "Finely engraved leaf work", "arabesque scrolls and leaf designs, the border being vine work". The description notes that the barrel is engraved at the breech and inlaid with a line of platinum and that the breech bolt and buttplate are engraved. The left side of the receiver features a detailed vignette of two Whitetail deer in a forest setting while the right side of the receiver is engraved with a vignette of a pair of Pronghorn antelope. The forearm and pistol grip stock are highly figured, fancy grain, XXX walnut with a semi-matte oil finish. The pistol grip and forearm have rarely encountered Winchester "Style D" checkering with relief carved oak leaf and acorn designs. The pistol grip has a black hard rubber cap embossed with "WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS COMPANY". Eyelets for detachable sling swivels are fitted to the stock and forearm cap. The half-round/half-octagon barrel has a rare Lyman Patent Windgauge front sight with folding globe aperture, and swivel adjusting spring clamp and sporting style buckhorn rear sight with serrated edges and screw adjustable centerpiece. The barrel has a dovetail with blank inserted on the top barrel flat ahead of the rear sight. The top barrel flat is roll-stamped with the two-line legend: "MANUFACTURED BY THE/WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS CO. NEW HAVEN, CONN. U.S.A." ahead of the rear sight. "NICKEL STEEL BARREL/ESPECIALLY FOR SMOKELESS POWDER" is roll-stamped on the left side of the barrel below the rear sight. The caliber: "30 W.C.F." is roll-stamped on the top of the barrel ahead of the takedown collar and surrounded by a dot and scallop border topped by a scrollwork flourish. A Lyman "Combination Tang Peep Sight" with coarsely knurled post is mounted on the receiver tang. The serial number is roll-stamped across the bottom of the receiver behind the takedown collar. The barrel, half-magazine, forearm cap, takedown collar, receiver and bolt are blue. The loading gate and extractor have a fire blue finish. The hammer, trigger, lever and crescent buttplate are color casehardened. The rifle is complete with a telescopic sight marked: "JOHN W. SIDLE/PHILA./1264 PA" in three lines near the eyepiece. The sight has a finely blued, 18 1/2 inch straight tube with knurled eyepiece and fine crosshair reticle. The scope has a side-mounted rear base that attaches to the receiver side screws and a front base that fits the dovetail in the rifle barrel. The rear base is micrometer-adjustable for elevation and the front base has a micrometer windage knob. The front base is roll-stamped: "CATARACT T. & O. CO./BUFFALO, NY." in two lines and the rear base is roll stamped: "PAT. APPLD. FOR"., and numbered "20" on the inside. The scope is complete with a shorter rear mount, mounting screws and alternate rear aperture. John W. Sidle was a Philadelphia microscope manufacturer who also made high quality telescopic sights c. 1900. Sidle marketed his sights as the "Snapshot Telescopic Sight" and his catalogue depicted a "Snapshot" sight with a side mount on a Winchester lever action rifle. The lack of any wear on the left side of the rifle receiver indicates that the Snapshot sight was probably never mounted on this rifle but the additional barrel dovetail and front and rear sight mounts indicate that the sight was intended to be used on this rifle.

Class: Antique

Excellent plus. This magnificent rifle retains 98% of the bright original blue and color casehardened finish. The barrel and magazine have nearly all of the blue finish. Wear is limited to several tiny scratches on the underside of the barrel in front of the takedown lever and some traces of flaking on the magazine tip. The barrel

Excellent Winchester Model 1895 Saddle Ring Carbine

Lot # 1024 (Sale Order: 25 of 951)

Exceptional Winchester Model 1895 Lever Action Saddle Ring Carbine

This Winchester Model 1895 saddle ring carbine was manufactured in 1920. The carbine has the Type 2 receiver with saddle ring mounted on the left side and distinctive military style folding leaf rear sight, handguard and forearm with grasping groove. The stock has a carbine style steel buttplate with sliding steel trap door. The barrel, receiver, bolt, hammer, lever, buttplate and other components have blue commercial finish. The stock, handguard and forearm are oil-finished, straight grain, American walnut. The barrel has a blued steel front sight blade and folding leaf rear sight. The rear sight leaf is graduated to "17", and the left side of the rear sight base is graduated from "1-10". The butt trap contains a Winchester military style bore brush, cord and brass weight. The top of the receiver is stamped with the Winchester oval "W/P" proof mark and the caliber designation ".30/ARMY" in two lines. The upper left side of the receiver is roll-stamped: "MANUFACTURED BY THE WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS CO.NEW HAVEN CONN. U.S.A." in one line above the 1895-1907 patent dates. The upper receiver tang is roll-stamped: "MODEL 1895/-WINCHESTER-/TRADE MARK REG. U.S. PAT OFF & FGN." in three lines. The serial number is roll-stamped across the bottom of the lower tang in small numerals between the tang screws. The distinctive Model 1895 was the first Winchester rifle with a non-detachable box magazine and the first Winchester lever action rifle chambered for high velocity military cartridges.

Class: Curio & Relic Long Gun

Excellent. This carbine shows only very limited storage and appears to be an un-issued military contract weapon. Several cases of un-fired Model 1895 carbines were imported from Central or South America during the 1950s; this carbine appears to be one of those firearms. The barrel, barrel band, rear sight, receiver, bolt, hammer, trigger, lever and buttplate retain 98% of the original blue finish. The magazine is free from the cycling wear that is typically found on Model 1895 rifles and carbines that have seen any use. The only significant wear on the carbine is a one-inch spot of flaking (touched up with cold blue) on the bottom of the magazine. The stock forearm and handguard remain in excellent, condition with nearly all of the original oil finish. This is an outstanding example of a Winchester Model 1895 saddle ring carbine.
