Most of the finish wear is concentrated on the stock wrist, underside of the forearm and around the edges of the buttplate. The "Style H" checkered panels show moderate handling wear. Finish wear on the barrel is limited to some slight scuff marks cased by fixing the socket bayonet. The distinctive blued forearm cap has some very minor finish wear. The barrel legend and caliber markings are perfect. The bolt retains nearly all of the bright blue finish. The finish on the loading gate has faded to a blue-gray patina. The receiver, lever and hammer retain 98% plus of the fiery case colors; wear is limited to several minor scratch marks along the upper right edge of the receiver. The buttplate has 95% of the case colors with some very minor wear on the heel and toe. J. Ulrich Engraved/Inlaid Winchester Deluxe Model 1873 Rifle

Lot # 3010 (Sale Order: 11 of 960)

Well-Documented, Incredibly Rare Historic Paris 1889 Exposition Universelle Grand Prix Winning John Ulrich Signed Factory Engraved and Gold Inlaid Winchester Deluxe Model 1873 Lever Action Rifle with Factory Letter and Paris 1889 Exposition Memorabilia

Offered here is a crown jewel of Winchester collecting: "only factory gold inlaid Model 1873 (other than inscriptions of barrel bands) currently known to collectors," as R.L. Wilson proclaimed in "Winchester Engraving" (page 195). Another surfaced after he made that statement, and we believe there are four now known. This high grade rifle embellished by renowned Master Engraver John Ulrich was built for display at the 1889 Exposition Universelle held in Paris, France. Held from May 6 to October 1889, the Paris Exposition Universelle coincided with the 100th anniversary of the storming of the Bastille, the incident that sparked the French Revolution. A world's fair, the exhibition spotlighted international advances in science and technology while also showcasing artifacts from the world's past. The iconic Eiffel Tower was commissioned which stood as the entrance to the fair and in 1889 was the tallest man made structure in the world. Exhibitors and displays were judged by juries of experts in each respective field. "Grand-Prix" was awarded to the best in each class then gold and silver respectively. Mr. Gastinne-Renette, the renowned Paris gunmaker, served as the foreman of the jury responsible for judging the firearms displays. Mr. Renette in his official report on the fair gave credit to the "superiority of the United States for wholesale manufacture of repeating arms." It was the United States policy that all U.S. exhibiters be overseen by the State Department. In total, exhibitors from the United States received twelve gold medals among them were; "Colt's firearms Manufacturing Company of Hartford" and "Smith & Wesson of Springfield." The United States was only awarded two Grand-Prix champions; John B. Stetson & Co. of Philadelphia for "hats" and lastly The Winchester Repeating Arms Company of New Haven, for "firearms". The original solid gold Grand-Prix champions medallion still accompanies this rifle as does a pierced and engraved plaque. The accompanying factory letter lists this historic rifle with $50.00 factory engraving and gold inlay, octagon barrel in .44 caliber, blue finish, plain trigger and checkered pistol grip stock when received in the warehouse on March 13, 1889. Although no shipping date was provided, the Winchester ledgers list the rifle as designated for Paris, which refers to the 1889 Exposition Universelle. Ulrich signed his work "J. ULRICH" in small letters just behind the trigger. The embellishment consists of engraved scrollwork and flush gold inlaid borders on the receiver, barrel at the muzzle and breech, forend cap and buttplate tang. Additional engraved scrollwork appears on the hammer, dust cover, cartridge elevator and lever. The third model receiver features fine engraved game scenes inside circular panels: a bighorn sheep on the left side and a moose on the right side. Detailed gold inlaid game scenes are featured on the side plates: a bull elk and doe motif on the left and a bear on the right. The screw heads are engraved with floral patterns. The barrel is stamped with the two-line address/patent dates marking ahead of the rear sight and "44 WCF" marked amongst the scrollwork at the breech and is equipped with a blade front sight and elevation adjustable rear sight. The cartridge elevator is marked "44 CAL." The upper tang is marked "MODEL 1873." Engraved accents surround the serial number on the lower tang. The highly figured forearm and pistol grip stock feature multi-point checkering. The buttstock has a horn grip insert, is fitted with a trapdoor buttplate and contains a four piece cleaning rod. Fair organizers recognized the display by awarding Winchester with a gold medal. The exhibition engraving and inlay on the rifle is indicative of the rich quality and style of John Ulrich and makes clear to all who see it that Winchester was worthy to bring home gold. This rifle is pictured and identified in R.L. Wilson's "Winchester Engraving" on page 195.

Class: Antique

Fine. The rifle has a mottled gray patina. 40% original nitre blue remains on the loading gate. The engraving is crisp. The wood is fine with minor dings and scratches, retaining most of the finish and crisp checkering overall. Mechanically excellent. Do not miss this once in a lifetime opportunity to acquire an extremely rare factory gold inlaid Model 1873 rifle signed by renowned Master Engraver John Ulrich and documented as being displayed at the Paris 1889 Exposition Universelle. As a Winchester crown jewel, this Model 1873 is a must have for the serious collector!

Engraved Deluxe Winchester 183, Inscribed to Bill Germayne

Lot # 3011 (Sale Order: 12 of 960)

Historic New York Engraved Winchester Deluxe Model 1873 Lever Action Rifle with Inscription from Winchester Repeating Arms Co. to Bill Germayne, Guide of the Yellowstone, with Factory Letter, Additional Documentation, and Framed Images

Manufactured in 1884. The rifle has a German silver blade front sight, the two-line factory address on top of the barrel, u-notch sporting rear sight, silver plated and engraved frame and furniture which includes a buffalo head on the right side plate and "WINCHESTER REP. ARMS CO./TO/BILL GERMAYNE/-GUIDE-/OF THE YELLOWSTONE" inscribed on the left side plate, sling swivels on the forearm cap and butt, a checkered forearm, and fancy grade checkered pistol grip stock. The factory letter indicates this rifle was originally received in the warehouse on March 29, 1884, and shipped on March 31 in order 11391 as a rifle with a .32 caliber, 26 inch, octagon barrel; plain trigger, checkered pistol grip stock, sling, and swivels. The engraving has been attributed to John Ulrich by Herbert G. Houze based on the scrollwork and "the use of a dotted circle border pattern around the inscription cartouche." Others have attributed the engraving to L.D. Nimschke. Mr. Houze also stated that, "The initials 'LG' entered in the 'Remarks' column of the original shipping record probably stand for Lincoln Grant of Boston. . ." Mr. Houze also notes that Grant was one of Winchester's exhibition shooters in the 1880s and 1890s and notes that exhibition shooters could order items from the company at the company's expense for prizes or presentations. Lynn J. Houze notes that the "LG" is in red which indicates it was a special order "perhaps from a salesman or from an officer of the company." The rifle was manufactured in the year following several well-known excursions to Yellowstone. A letter signed by Nancy Yaufman Jones on October 26, 2002, indicates this rifle was passed down from her grandfather William Yaufman to her father and ultimately to her. The family always assumed the engraving was done by the factory. Bill Germayne (aka Bill the German) (1852-1891) was born in Germany and arrived in the U.S. in 1868. He appears in documents both under his birth name William Yaufman and his pseudonyms. His scouting and hunting career began around 1876, and he returned east in the 1880s and settled in Newark, New Jersey, were he ran an Old West themed saloon, gun store, and range and also served as the treasurer of the Outing Rifle Association formed in 1888. Multiple news articles, mainly relating to him drunkenly threatening to kill his wife's lover while brandishing two revolvers, report that Germayne accompanied President Arthur during his tour of Yellowstone in 1883. Interestingly, Germayne was let go after that potentially deadly encounter with little more than a warning. Multiple report's conflate President Arthur's tour with another group under Rufus Hatch. Other sources clearly indicate Germayne did not guide President Arthur's party but did accompany Rufus Hatch's party and guide Lord Headley on a hunting trip. There were actually several simultaneous tours going on, and Hatch's group occasionally intermingled with the president's, so it would be easy for distant newsmen to get them mixed up and think they were one in the same, especially given President Arthur's was the most well-known. Robert Todd Lincoln and General Sheridan were along with the president as were other politicians. The Hatch excursion toured the park in August to early September and contained more than fifty men and women (fashionable "dudes and dudesses") from Europe and over 75 people in total. According to "The Yellowstone Story" by Haines (copy included), Jack Baronett was the president's guide, and Germayne and his hunting companion George W. Crow were invited to join Hatch's excursion, "a lavish, all-expense-paid tour arranged for a number of dignitaries from both sides of the Atlantic to show off the National Hotel and other facilities of the Yellowstone Park Improvement Company," after they captured George Webber, the second man convicted of murder at the park, and brought him in to the authorities near the beginning of the tour. Germayne and Crow entertained the "guests with trick shooting (Germayne's specialty). Lord Headley later hired them to guide him on a hunting trip into the mountains." An included portrait shows Germayne armed with a non-engraved Winchester Model 1873 in a similar configuration. It is possible that this is the same rifle and Germayne or Winchester later had it engraved.

Serial #3 New Haven Volcanic No. 1 Pistol

Lot # 3015 (Sale Order: 16 of 960)

Exceptional Extremely Early Serial Number 3 Factory Engraved New Haven Arms Co. Volcanic Lever Action No. 1 Prototype Pocket Pistol

New Haven Arms Co. manufactured an estimated grand total of 1,075 Volcanic No. 1 pistols (total includes both 3 ½ inch and 6 inch barreled variations) from 1857 to 1860. Offered here is a very early production No. 1 pocket pistol, serial number 3, with several non-standard features. First, the pistol has a 4 inch barrel in .31 caliber. Although New Haven advertised No. 1 pocket pistols with a 4 inch barrel, the barrels actually measured 3 ½ inches. No. 1 pistols manufactured by Smith & Wesson in 1854 to 1855 had a 4 inch barrel but these barrels were part octagon. The barrel on this pistol is full octagon. Second, the grip frame is extended and therefore longer than a standard New Haven No. 1 pocket pistol frame. Third, the contours to the front of the frame distinguish it from the standard New Haven No. 1 pocket pistol. The frame contours on this pistol feature a “stepped” type design. These contours are similar to those found on small frames manufactured by Smith & Wesson but note that a single screw secures the lever and side plates rather than two as on the S&W specimens. Other design features on this pistol are shared with the standard New Haven No. 1 pocket pistol. These shared features include a full octagon barrel, a flat bottom grip, a finger loop lever without spur, a single screw securing the lever and side plates, and engraved brass side plates and frame. Engraved New Haven No. 1 pocket pistols were more common than their plain, polished frame counterparts. A broad floral scroll pattern is engraved on the silver plated side plates and frame. Floral patterns are engraved on the back strap and top flats of the receiver. Note that the engraving coverage deviates from the standard New Haven No. 1 pocket pistol pattern as the front of the frame is plain which is more commonly observed on S&W produced engraved small frames. This lack of engraving was presumably due to the “stepped” contour which created less surface area for a proper embellishment. The barrel marking is faint and appears to read, “PATENT/FEB. 14, 1854.” It is fitted with a simple notch rear sight and a small silver blade front sight. The early single digit serial number “3” is found on the grip frame, both grip panels, and some small parts like the trigger and lever. A combination of the aforementioned features makes this pistol highly unusual and coupled with it single digit serial number certainly makes it a very early production gun, possibly even a prototype, New Haven built before settling on the familiar design we are accustom to find on scarce and highly desirable No. 1s. Volcanic firearms are historically significant and represent an important step in the development of American repeating firearms and self-contained cartridges. The lever action and integral spring-loaded magazine introduced with Volcanic pistols and carbines served as the basic design for the Henry rifle and the Winchester Model 1866, 1873 and 1876 rifles. Oliver Winchester's investment in the Volcanic Repeating Arms Company eventually led to the establishment of the Winchester Repeating Arms Company.

Class: Antique

Excellent. The barrel and magazine tube retain 97% plus original blue finish showing muzzle wear. 50% original blue finish remains on the lever. 98% plus age darkened original silver remains on the frame. The engraving is crisp. The grips are fine showing minor dings and scratches and retain most of the original varnish. Mechanically excellent. This high condition, extremely early production New Haven No. 1 pocket pistol with non-standard features will make a worthy addition to the most advanced antique collection. A definite must have for the serious collector, especially for collectors who believe they seen of have it all! Provenance: Dr. Gerald Klaz collection

Ulrich Signed Engraved Winchester Model 1866 Rifle

Lot # 3016 (Sale Order: 17 of 960)

Documented Conrad Ulrich Signed Factory Exhibition Panel Scene Engraved Winchester Model 1866 Lever Action Rifle Masterpiece

This extraordinary Conrad F. Ulrich signed factory exhibition engraved Winchester Model 1866 is pictured and identified in R.L. Wilson's "Winchester Engraving" on page 116. Ulrich has signed his masterpiece in five places: just behind the trigger, ahead and behind the lever latch, and twice on the left side of the receiver among a fleur-de-lis engraving. The frame, forend cap and buttplate are richly decorated and are of extremely high grade factory work from the period. The panel scenes and most of the borders are semi-relief engraved. For the female nude on the right side of the receiver Ulrich copied the popular 19th century sculpture by Hiram Powers titled "The Greek Slave." A buck and doe scene completes the right side of the frame. The left side of the receiver has a wonderful running deer scene and an additional female nude. The borders were influenced by Victorian and neo-Gothic art and architecture, and these motifs are extended to the forend cap and buttplate tang. Engravers of the period, like Ulrich, often stylized their engraving patterns from various sources. The engraving on this rifle shares similarities to another Conrad Ulrich identified engraved Model 1866, serial number 79994, which is also pictured in "Winchester Engraving" (page 117). The top barrel flat is marked "WINCHESTER'S-REPEATING ARMS. NEW HAVEN. CT./KING'S-IMPROVEMENT-PATENTED-MARCH 29. 1866. OCTOBER 16. 1860", and the barrel is equipped with a German silver blade front sight and folding ladder rear sight. It retains the rimfire bolt. Sling swivels are attached to the underside of the forend cap and buttstock. The forearm and straight grip stock are highly figured walnut. The brass buttplate has a trapdoor containing a four piece cleaning rod. The left side of the lower tang is marked "VXXX." The stock inlet is numbered to the gun.

Class: Antique

Very good. The barrel and magazine tube retain traces of original blue finish in the protective areas with the balance a smooth brown patina with a few patches of minor pitting. Some traces of original nitre blue remain on the loading gate. The brass has a rich, attractive appearance. The engraving is crisp. The refinished wood is also very good with a loose chip on the wrist (left side) and some minor handling marks. Mechanically excellent. This documented Model 1866 is a great Ulrich masterpiece that would be a fine addition to even the most advanced Winchester collections. It is not often that we catalog signed work by Conrad Ulrich.

New Haven Arms Company Volcanic Lever Action Carbine

Lot # 3017 (Sale Order: 18 of 960)

Desirable New Haven Arms Company Volcanic Lever Action Carbine with Scarce 21 Inch Barrel

This Volcanic lever action carbine was manufactured c. 1857. This carbine has the rare 21 inch barrel with integral 25-shot magazine, brass receiver and crescent buttplate. The top barrel flat is roll-stamped with the New Haven Arms marking: "NEWHAVEN CONN. PATENT FEB. 14. 1854". The serial number is stamped on: (1) the right side of the loading lever, (2) left side of the lower receiver tang beneath the stock, (3) top of the stock beneath the buttplate, (4) inside of the buttplate at the heel, (5) shanks of both hand-fitted buttplate screws, (6) shank of the lower receiver screw and (7) shank of the upper rear tang screw. The tang screw behind the trigger is numbered "141". The serial number on the right side of the lever indicates that this carbine was at least partially assembled by the Volcanic Arms Company before principal stockholder Oliver Winchester took control and reorganized the firm as the New Haven Arms Company in April 1857. The blued barrel has a half moon, nickel silver, front sight blade. A rear sight with round elevation wheel is mounted on the top of the receiver behind the ejection port. The rear sight has a blue finish. The hammer, trigger and lever are color casehardened. The stock is straight grain American walnut stock with a varnished piano finish. Most New Haven Arms Volcanic carbines had engraved receivers and buttplates; carbines with plain polished fames are rare. Volcanic carbines and pistols are scarce and historically important firearms. The combination of the self-contained "rocket-ball" cartridge and self-cocking and loading lever action with integral spring-loaded magazine were revolutionary advances in firearms design. With the invention of improved cartridges, the Volcanic action and magazine served as the basis for the Henry lever action rifle and subsequent Winchester designs.

Class: Antique

Very good. The barrel was refinished many years ago and the New Haven Arms legend on the top flat is faint. The barrel has a mottled silver gray finish with sharp edges and generally smooth metal surfaces. The brass receiver and crescent buttplate have a mellow aged patina and are in fine overall condition. The side plate joints are tight. Small amounts of blue and casehardened finish are visible on the hammer, trigger, lever and rear sight. The stock retains more than half of the varnish with numerous scattered dents and scratches and a hair-line crack on both sides of the stock that extends about four-inches from the buttplate. This is a solid representative example of a historically significant New Haven Arms Company Volcanic Carbine with seldom encountered 21 inch barrel.

Civil War Era New Haven Arms Company Henry Lever Action Rifle

Lot # 3018 (Sale Order: 19 of 960)

Civil War Era New Haven Arms Company Henry Lever Action Rifle

This Henry rifle was manufactured by the New Haven Arms Company in 1864. The rifle has the late production features which include: (1) nickel-silver square back front sight blade, (2) folding ladder rear sight with 900 yard center notch and elevation bar stop screw, (3) large diameter magazine follower, (4) beveled receiver follower slot, (5) second style receiver without the rear sight dove-tail and (5) second style crescent buttplate with pointed heel. In addition, the rifle is fitted with the sling swivel on the left side of the stock and screw-mounted loop on the left side of the barrel which were standard features on later production Henry rifles. The buttplate has a hinged trap door. The top barrel flat is roll-stamped with the second style legend: "HENRY'S PATENT. OCT. 16. 1860/MANUFACT'D BY THE NEWHAVEN ARMS. CO. NEWHAVEN. CT." utilizing all serif letters. The serial number is stamped: (1) on the top barrel flat between the rear sight and the receiver, (2) on the left side of the lower receiver tang, (3) in the upper tang inlet of the stock, and (4) on the inside of the buttplate toe. The buttplate and tag screws are not numbered which is correct for Henry rifles in this serial number range. All of the visible serial numbers match. The rifle originally had a blued barrel/magazine with color casehardened hammer, trigger and lever and brass receiver and crescent buttplate. The straight grain American walnut stock is oil finished with the Henry "bump" visible under the swivel on the left side of buttstock. Henry rifles were privately purchased in large numbers by federal soldiers in Midwestern regiments who wanted the firepower offered by the 15-shot lever action repeating rifle. Many soldiers who re-enlisted following their original three-year term of service in 1864 used their re-enlistment bonus to pay for the Henry rifles.

Class: Antique

Very good plus. This rifle is all original and retains traces of the blue finish on protected areas of the barrel/magazine and with small amounts of casehardened finish on the hammer and lever. Most of the blue finish on the barrel/magazine has aged to an even, plum brown patina. The barrel edges show some handling wear. Metal surfaces are generally smooth with some scattered age spotting and some localized pitting on the left side of the barrel at the junction with the receiver. The address and serial number are sharp. The front sight blade and folding ladder rear sight are both original to the rifle. The case colors on the hammer, trigger and lever have mostly aged to a smooth brown finish. The distinctive brass receiver and crescent buttplate are in very good overall condition with an attractive untouched patina. The receiver side plate joints are crisp. The left side of the receiver has scattered spots of age discoloration and both sides of the receiver have shallow scratches and handling marks. The extractor is chipped. The buttplate has light handling marks and the same age spotting as the left side of the receiver. The stock remains in very good condition with moderate handling wear. This is solid representative example of a historically important Civil War era production Henry lever action rifle.

Factory Engraved Winchester Deluxe Model 1895 Takedown Rifle

Lot # 3019 (Sale Order: 20 of 960)

Documented Rare Special Order Relief Factory Engraved Winchester Deluxe Model 1895 Takedown Lever Action Rifle

Manufactured in 1915. The unusual factory engraving on this deluxe Model 1895 takedown rifle is not a pattern from the Winchester factory engraving pattern catalog. In fact, it is, as firearms historian R.L. Wilson noted in his book "Winchester Engraving," "an out of the ordinary leaf, scroll, game scene and border décor which enlivens the frame and magazine of this rifle." Fellow Winchester historian George Madis commented, "We find more unusual patterns of engraving and more rare game scenes on the Model 95 than on any other action collector's Winchester. One reason for this is the fact that more engravers were working at the factory, those who wanted engraving more often specified what patterns they desired, and Winchester was promoting the Model 95 as the ideal big game rifle." Furthermore, "Engraved Models 95 are very rare; by the time the Model 95 was introduced the cost of engraving had become quite high." The receiver features scarce low relief game scenes depicting a stag on the left side and a bear on the right side. The German style engraved motifs extend to the barrel breech, magazine, takedown collar and lever. The rifle has standard Winchester markings including the factory oval proofs which are stamped in nonstandard places in order to accommodate the engraving. The barrel and upper tang are drilled and tapped for sight mounting. It is fitted with a W.F. Sheard blade front sight, folding two leaf rear sight and Lyman receiver sight. Other special features include the highly figured, deluxe burl grain walnut forearm and straight grip stock featuring multi-point checkering, raised cheekpiece and shotgun checkered steel buttplate. Also note the stock has special order drop and length. The rifle is pictured and identified in George Madis' "The Winchester Book" on page 466 and R.L. Wilson's "Winchester Engraving" on page 279.

Class: Curio & Relic Long Gun

Very fine, retaining 80% plus original blue finish with the balance a smooth gray patina. The engraving is crisp. The wood is very fine with minimal handling marks and crisp checkering overall. Mechanically excellent. The perfect factory engraved Model 1895 for the serious Winchester collector looking for something out of the ordinary. Provenance: Felix Bedlan

The buttstock has a Winchester hard rubber grip cap and a crescent buttplate. The left side of the upper tang is marked "1121*." The receiver is fitted with a Lyman peep sight and a saddle ring staple (saddle ring absent) on the left side. A second Winchester factory oval proof is stamped on top of the receiver. Winchester Deluxe Model 1886 Lever Action Rifle in .45-90 with Factory Letter

The museum letter describes this Winchester Model 1886 as: "rifle, caliber 45-90, octagon barrel, plain trigger" with "checkered pistol grip stock". Browning, the Winchester Model 1886 had one of the strongest lever actions ever utilized on a Winchester rifle and was capable of handling the most powerful hunting cartridges of the day.

Class: Antique

Extremely fine. This stunning rifle retains at 98% of the factory blue and casehardened finish. 97% of the original blue is present on the barrel and magazine. The Winchester legend, caliber markings and rework proof marks are perfect. The bolt retains 98% of the bright blue finish. The bright blue on the loading port cover has faded slightly but is 90% intact. The forearm cap, receiver, hammer, lever and crescent buttplate have fiery case colors. The casehardened components have protective lacquer coating. There are two non-factory filler screws in left rear frame. The highly figured, fancy grade, walnut stock and forearm are also in extremely fine condition and have 98% of the piano finish intact.
