RARE From Cambridge to Champlain March 18 to May 5, 1776 Diary - Limited to 250 COPIES

Lot # 14

From Cambridge to Champlain March 18 to May 5, 1776 A Manuscript diary with a foreword by Bruce Lancaster. Published by Lawrenca B. Romaine, Middleboro, Mass (1957) ex-...morelibrary, containing 30 pages of text and a frontispiece of a photograph of the original journal. Lawrence B. Bidwell's Travels From Wall Street to Newgate (c.1880) Sequel to Forging His Own Chains

Lot # 18

Good condition, hardcover, there is some wear to the pages. "From 21 January to 28 February 1873, four American con-artists defrauded the Bank of England of £102,217, equ...moreivalent to nearly £10 million in 2015. The four men responsible for the Bank of England forgeries, brothers George and Austin Bidwell, George MacDonnell and Edwin Noyes were convicted at the Old Bailey and sentenced to life imprisonment. The discovery of the crime, and the subsequent investigations and trials, received widespread attention at the time, with the London Times describing it as one of the "most skillful attempts to prey upon the complex organization of modern commerce." The men responsible were already experienced fraudsters prior to the Bank of England forgeries. George Bidwell, 33 at the time of the forgeries, had been sentenced to two years imprisonment in 1865 for his part in defrauding grocers in West Virginia. His brother Austin Bidwell, 25 at the time of the forgeries, was already a notorious bank forger in the United States. George MacDonnell, a Harvard graduate, had previously been carrying out extensive forgery operations in New England and was incarcerated at Sing Sing where he became acquainted with the Bidwell brothers, who were also serving time there."

RAREST The Laws of the United States of America (1793) Two Volumes - George Washington - John Adams

Lot # 25

The Laws of the United States of America, Two Volumes - Missing Volume 2 or three volumes. United States; Congress; Folwell, Richard. First Folwell Edition with Swift's I...morendex. Volume III, though dated 1796, contains the acts of the 2nd session of the 4th Congress, in session until March of 1797. Many acts with George Washington and John Adams. Includes texts of the Constitution, the Bill of Rights and the Treaty of Paris. "This set is also important as a collection of early American treaties, with the appendices including the treaties of the United States with foreign powers and Indian tribes" (Reese). Indian affairs are treated at length. Legislation includes several Indian treaties, an act establishing the President's right to create "trading houses" with Indian tribes, acts appointing Indian Agents, an act providing for a boundary line between settlers and Indians running west of the new Ohio territories (which settlers were not allowed to cross). Evans observes that this edition enjoys "many peculiar advantages," such as the cumulative 130-page index in Volume III compiled by Zephaniah Swift."
