RARE CIVIL WAR XVII CORPS BADGE IN GOLD W/ T BAR

Lot # 4 (Sale Order: 4 of 868)

Civil War United States Army 17th Corps Badge in gold. rare badge measuring 2 1/4 inches with a T bar pin to the reverse. Badge is in excellent condition showing an incredible amount of detail. Creation In October 1862 the XIII Corps and XIV Corps were created in the Western Theater. At the time it was created the XIII Corps constituted the entire Army of the Tennessee under Ulysses S. Grant. Initially Grant subdivided the corps into the Right, Left and Center wings. Major General James B. McPherson led the Center of the XIII Corps. On December 18, 1862 the XIII Corps was officially divided. The Center officially became the XVII Corps with McPherson still in command and was originally composed of three divisions under John A. Logan, John McArthur, and Isaac F. Quinby. Vicksburg Campaign Grant's Vicksburg Campaign was the XVII Corps' first operation. It fought the Battle of Raymond and captured Jackson alongside William T. Sherman's XV Corps. On May 16, 1863 it bore the brunt of the fighting in the Battle of Champion Hill. During the Siege of Vicksburg, it formed the center of the Union forces. Chattanooga and Meridian While most of the XVII Corps was left in Mississippi, William T. Sherman took the 2nd Division, led by Brig. Gen. John E. Smith, to help in lifting the siege of Chattanooga. Two of Smith's brigades (led by Green Berry Raum and Karl Leopold Matthies) took a significant part in the Battle of Missionary Ridge. In the winter of 1863–1864 Sherman returned to Vicksburg to lead the Meridian campaign. McPherson led the corps during the campaign. Only the 3rd and 4th Divisions and the 3rd Brigade of the 1st Division took part (the 2nd Division still being at Chattanooga). Atlanta Campaign In 1864 General McPherson assumed command of the Army of the Tennessee and for a short time no officer was appointed to command the corps. Eventually Major General Francis P. Blair, Jr. took command. Sherman transferred the rest of the corps to Georgia to take part in the Atlanta campaign. Only the 3rd and 4th Divisions took part in the campaign and these divisions missed much of the early battles but played a major role in the Battle of Kennesaw Mountain and the Battle of Atlanta. The 3rd Division under Mortimer D. Leggett had a particularly hard fight on Bald Hill. Bald Hill would be renamed Leggett's Hill in honor of the division commander. After the fall of Atlanta, General Blair took a leave of absence from the army and General Thomas E. G. Ransom commanded the XVII Corps. When Ransom died of exposure during the pursuit of John Bell Hood's army Blair returned shortly after to command of the corps. March to the Sea and the Carolinas Blair led the corps during the March to the Sea and took part in the capture of Savannah, Georgia. The XVII Corps fought exclusively in the Battle of Salkehatchie River, where two of Blair's brigade defeated a Confederate force attempting to block Sherman's crossing of the river. Blair and the corps were present at the Battle of Bentonville but did not take an active part in the fighting. Red River Division One division formerly part of the XVII Corps was dubbed the Red River Division or the Provisional Division and was attached to the Right Wing-XVI Corps under Andrew J. Smith. The division was led by Thomas K. Smith and fought in many of the important battles during Red River Campaign. The Red River Division moved to Nashville. It was again attached to A.J. Smith's command only this time it was styled the 3rd Division of the "Detachment of the Army of the Tennessee". The division was led by Colonel Jonathan B. Moore and was lightly engaged at the Battle of Nashville. Command history: James B. McPherson 22 December 1862 – 12 March 1864 no commander 12 March 1864 – 4 May 1864 Francis P. Blair, Jr. 4 May 1864 – 22 September 1864 Thomas E. G. Ransom 22 September 1864 – 10 October 1864 no commander 10 October 1864 – 31 October 1864 Francis P. Blair, Jr. 31 October 1864 – 19 July 1865 W. W. Belknap 19 July 1865 – 1 August 1865

CIVIL WAR UNIT HISTORY OF FULLER'S OHIO BRIGADE

Lot # 5 (Sale Order: 5 of 868)

Press of A.J. Watt, Cleveland, 1909, 623 pgs., 1909. Hardcover. Book Condition: Near Fine. 1st Edition. Very good condition. Hinges are tight and interior is also excellent. Very bright decorative front cover with gilt lettering on spine. A dependable brigade history of service in the west by four Ohio regiments of volunteer infantry: 27th, 39th, 43rd, 63rd. A necessary source for any study of campaigning in the west and camp life. 1/600 copies, exceedingly scarce. This copy has a dedication to a member of the 43rd OVI. Along with the book is an original order form for the book. Early life and career John W. Fuller was born in the village of Harston, located in the English county of Cambridgeshire. His father was a minister of the Baptist faith and also a graduate of Bristol College[disambiguation needed] in England, and was responsible for much of Fuller's primary education. In 1833 Fuller relocated with the family to Oneida County, New York. There the rest of his education came from reading in a bookstore in Utica, and starting in 1841 Fuller began working there. By 1852 Fuller owned and operated a publishing business in Utica, and later was the city's treasurer. He was also active in the New York State Militia, serving as an officer. In 1853 Fuller married Anna B. Rathbun, also a resident of Utica. The couple would have six children together; three sons named Edward, Rathbun, and Frederick, and three daughters named Florence (later married to Thomas A. Taylor), Jennie, and Irene. In 1858 Fuller's business was destroyed by a fire, and he moved to Toledo, Ohio, where he again began operating a book publishing firm. Civil War service When the American Civil War began in 1861, Fuller chose to follow his home state and the Union cause. He was ordered to train soldiers in Grafton, Virginia, which is in modern-day Taylor County, West Virginia. He also briefly served on the staff of Brig. Gen. Charles W. Hill. On August 18 Fuller was given command of the 27th Ohio Infantry with the rank of colonel. Fuller and the 27th first served in Missouri under Brig. Gens. John Pope and David Hunter. He and his command then participated in Pope's efforts at New Madrid on March 14, and then the Battle of Island Number Ten from February 28 to April 8, 1862. In the fall of 1862 Fuller was given brigade command in the Army of the Mississippi. He led it in Mississippi during the Battle of Iuka on September 19, and the Second Battle of Corinth on October 3–4. On December 31 his command fought at Battle of Parker's Cross Roads in Tennessee. During the battle, Fuller's brigade approached undetected and got behind Confederate Brig. Gen. Nathan Bedford Forrest's position. Left with no choice but to attack the Federal forces in his front and rear, Forrest had his men charge and repel Fuller's command, and then quickly reverse and move past and through the rest of the Union soldiers. Fuller and the other Federal units managed to capture six pieces of artillery, about 300 prisoners, and 350 horses, but Forrest's scattered men were able to escape and re-crossed the Tennessee River four days later. Fuller spent most 1863 on garrison duty within the Army of the Tennessee, and was promoted to brigadier general on January 5, 1864. In March 1864 Fuller led his command across the Tennessee River and captured the city of Decatur, Alabama.

ORDER OF SANTIAGO MEDAL NAMED TO OHIO SOLDIER

Lot # 6 (Sale Order: 6 of 868)

Original Military Order of Santiago Medal - Badge in Bronze. Engraved correctly on the slant in script 1st Sergt Ralph L. Spotts and No. 418. The number 418 was Spott's member number in the order. Made by Bailey Banks and Diddle " BB&B " Named to 1st. Sergeant Spotts who served in Company I, 8th Ohio National Guard "Colombian Rifles" from May 7th, 1895 and was promoted to 1st Sergt. He mustered into US service May 13th, 1898 and fought during the Battle of Santiago, Cuba on July 10, 1898. Was assigned to 5th Army Corps. Regiment was also known as the "McKinley's Own" He was promoted to Captain on September 7th 1898 and mustered out of service on November 21st, 1890. On 25 April 1898, the United States declared war on Spain, beginning the Spanish–American War. The 8th Ohio Volunteer Infantry was mustered into service on 13 May 1898 in Columbus, Ohio, and had 48 officers and 838 enlisted men on its roster. They arrived at Camp Alger, Virginia on 20 May, and trained there until 5 July, when they received orders to deploy to Santiago, Cuba under the command of GEN Nelson A. Miles. The regiment arrived in Siboney, Cuba on 10 July and reinforced the V Army Corps under GEN William Rufus Shafter. 0600 on 11 July, the American lines were ordered to open fire on the Spanish defenses. The barrage was very effective and much damage was done to the defending force. The batteries opened upon the enemy from El Pozo Hill, and the American fleet fired its shells into the city of Santiago. Every preparation had been made for a combined assault both by land and sea. Spanish General Toral had twice refused to make an unconditional surrender, and GEN Shafter, Commodore Winfield Scott Schley and Commodore William T. Sampson determined to give the Spaniards only one more chance and then destroy the city of Santiago with the batteries from the shore and on the war-ships. As the day progressed, the firing became heavier. From the sea, the bombardment was begun by the USS Newark with its 8-inch guns, and then the USS New York and USS Brooklyn followed. The men of the 8th Ohio could see the men of the Signal Corps on a high ridge wigwagging to direct the shots to the ships. The first heavy volley fired from the American lines almost effectually silenced the Spanish soldiers in the trenches, and hardly a sign of life could be seen there. The Siege of Santiago ended shortly after, on 17 July 1898, and the remained on occupation duty in Cuba until 18 August. They returned to the US on 26 August, and mustered out of service on 21 November 1898. In Cuba, the 8th Ohio lost 4 officers and 68 enlisted men due to Yellow fever.

BRITISH 5 BALL INFANTRY OFFICER'S SWORD SPADROON

Lot # 17 (Sale Order: 17 of 868)

1780s-1800 Introduced in the 1780s this was considered the first attempt at a uniform pattern sword for the British Infantry. Called the 5-ball Spadroon because of the 5 ball decoration on the hilt, this pattern proved quite popular and even the French and American army officers adopted it as their own. The French nicknamed it the "epee anglaise" (English sword) and put it into action during the French Revolutionary Wars prior to Napoleon crowning himself emperor. British officers used a number of variations of the pattern including the one offered here. Blade measures 30 inches in length. Bone handle is in excellent condition
