RECENTLY DISCOVERED CONFEDERATE SPILLER & BURR

Lot # 3001 (Sale Order: 1 of 669)

REVOLVER CARRIED BY JOHN D. GRADY, 5th ALABAMA CAVALRY. Cal. .36. S# 322. Bbl. 7" Octagonal bbl. This is the newest serial number added to database & was just recently di...morescovered in Gadsden, Alabama. “J. D. GRADY” is nicely scratched on bottom of grip strap. John D. Grady (1843-1895) was born, raised & died in Chambers County, Alabama. He enlisted in Co. A, Hilliard’s Alabama Legion July 7, 1862 & by December this unit became Co. A, 5th Alabama Cavalry. This revolver bears the rare “triumphant” of markings found on Spillers, “SPILLER & BURR” on barrel., “C.S.” on frame & numbered cylinder. Serial number 322 is a number listed as being issued in June 1864 to Macon MSK. We know that this gun however was made in Atlanta Georgia in 1863 originally. It must have had a field failure after its 1863 issue, sent to Macon for repair and reissue. There is “W” inspection mark stamped in bottom of right grip seen on other known Macon Armory issued revolvers. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: there is a current updated article on Spiller & Burr accompanying lot w/ gun listed by serial number in the Macon Armory memorandum book accompanying lot. CONDITION: very good overall. When gun was originally discovered, it was missing trigger guard, thumb bolt screw, right grip rear toe was broken & hammer spur was broken. These issues were all addressed by expert antique firearm restorer & trigger guard was replaced with an original from a Civil War Whitney navy which Spillers are modeled after. All matching numbers with exception of trigger guard which has Whitney serial number. Traces of original finish on cylinder and bottom of barrel. Brass has a mixed mustard patina with areas of verdigris near face of cylinder. Iron overall has brown patina. Mechanics are crisp with well-defined rifled bore. Restoration report & photos of revolver when found are available upon request. Regardless of the minor professional restoration, this is a superior example of the most difficult to find complete of all CS primary revolvers & this is among the handful identified to Confederate who carried it. PROVENANCE: Gadsden, Alabama family. (01-18012/JS). ANTIQUE. $25,000-30,000.

CONFEDERATE SPILLER & BURR REVOLVER ISSUED MAY

Lot # 3002 (Sale Order: 2 of 669)

1864, MACON ARMORY. Cal. 36. S# 218. This revolver that is among the few survivors listed by serial number in the Macon Armory records was issued May/June 1864. Revolver ...morehas matching serial numbers but also a crossed out serial number “1223” on bottom of barrel along w/ “218”. This feature is seen only on Spillers as so many failed inspection in Atlanta in 1863 such as this one. SN 1223 makes it among the very last Spillers made in Atlanta, the highest Atlanta number known is 1243. The left side of grip frame has a series of three “O”s which Albaugh believed meant “overstamped” and appears a good observation. Few Confederate revolvers can we date to manufacture and issue. This is an attractive Confederate brass framed revolver last in the extensive Confederate revolver collection of the late Gary Bizacky. CONDITION: good to very good overall, bbl. has hints of blue, but overall plum/brown. Cylinder has matching patina, sharp ratchet and safety slots. The cylinder also shows angle striations showing the metal used was twisted iron. Hammer smooth w/ matching patina. Brass frame and trigger guard were cleaned and toned down to medium mustard patina. Original grips have hand worn patina, small dents & nicks especially on butt, moderate edge wear. 2 Frame screws are restored as is internal mechanism & trigger. Thumb bolt is restored. The only serial numbered part restored is the loading lever arm, the attached cylinder pin is original & numbered. Mechanically functional w/ crisp rifled bore. (01-18457/JS). ANTIQUE. $20,000-25,000.

GREENSBORO, GEORGIA. Cal. 36. S# 1174. 7.5” Round bbl. w/ oct. bbl. housing stamped “LEECH & RIGDON CSA” honest original, authentic, & matching revolver made in Greensbor...moreo, GA in 1863. RARE & FINE CONFEDERATE DANCE DRAGOON REVOLVER W/

Lot # 3006 (Sale Order: 6 of 669)

GREAT PROVENANCE. Cal. 44. S# 321. This fine Dance revolver is among the highest serial numbers known. It is complete, original & matching. It ranks among the top 20% of ...moreall Dance Dragoons. It is the finest survivor of the late guns made w/ iron backstraps instead of brass. It also has wonderful Texas collection history & pictured on cover of The Texas Gun Collector, August 1953. Early Texas collector Bob Fowler relates a most interesting story dating history of this exact gun to robbery in Mertens, TX about 1880-1890 wherein this gun was used by the robber who was killed in a subsequent gun fight. Fowler’s letter is linked in provenance & should be read. “Dance revolver production had come to an end in East Columbia, TX by December 10, 1863. The federal occupation of Matagorda Island, located just off the Texas coast near Brazoria County, prompted the belief that the county was about to be invaded. The Confederate government doubtless wanted to consolidate the Dances' skills farther inland & out of harm's way. The Dances relocated to a site three miles north of Anderson in Grimes County, & here the Confederate government built a powder mill & pistol factory where this revolver was made in 1864.” (Gary Wiggins, Dance & Brothers, Texas Gunmakers of the Confederacy, 1986). Revolver is in standard configuration w/ 8” octagonal to round bbl., made without recoil shields. The revolver is serial numbered “321” everywhere normally numbered bbl., frame, cylinder, loading arm, plunger, latch, wedge, arbor, hammer, & grips. Aesthetically, this is a very pleasing example of classic Dance Dragoon revolver & few have such extensive Texas history. CONDITION: good to very good overall, complete & matching. Metal has gray iron patina w/ pitting. Serial number markings all easily discerned. Grips are well fit w/ erosion & chipping on butt, several notches cut on bottom of right grip. Mechanically functional but mainspring is weak, well-defined rifled bore. PROVENANCE: Bob Fowler, Waxahachie, TX 1948; ex-collection Eldon Hyder, Ft. Worth, TX; ex-collection Leo Brad shaw, Waco, TX; ex-collection John Lignau, Westphalia, TX 1976. (01-18456/JS). ANTIQUE. $50,000-60,000.

CONFEDERATE HOLSTER FOR GRISWOLD REVOLVER.

Lot # 3006A (Sale Order: 7 of 669)

This is a wonderful brown leather holster w/ a flower button as closure. This holster for many years was in the Steve Mullinax collection. He displayed it w/ one of his G...moreriswolds, though it will fit a Leech & Rigdon or most any other navy sized revolver. This holster was made from scraps which was not unusual for Confederate leather, not arsenal product showing Confederate ingenuity. CONDITION: very good overall, this is a fine survivor w/ great aesthetics, leather is still supple & stitching still intact. (02-13847/JS). $800-1,200.

RARE & FINE EARLY CONFEDERATE 1ST MODEL LEMAT

Lot # 3007 (Sale Order: 8 of 669)

REVOLVER. Cal. 42/18 Ga. S# 97/113/135. This early war “grapeshot” revolver has all the rare 1st Model features, including earliest engraved bbl markings of “COL. LeMAT’S...more PATENT”, loading assembly attached to bbl. on right side of gun, spring loaded latch to attach bbl. to frame, spur trigger guard, pinned lanyard ring stud, double eared hammer pivot for shotgun, reciprocating pin rotation system noted by series of holes on back of cylinder, and rabbeted not screwed on shotgun bbl. assembly. This gun is all orig, complete & functional, only the first contract of about 200 revolvers have all these characteristics. We can only document about 20 examples below SN 200. There are more identified examples among these 1st 200 than all other LeMat revolvers combined. Important Confederate personalities such as P.G.T. Beauregard (SN 8), Maj. Gen. John Lewis (SN 88), Stonewall Jackson (SN unknown), JEB Stuart (SN 115) and Henry Wirz (SN 189), Commander of Andersonville Prison. SN 7 was captured on the CSS Atlanta & 183 was captured on the CSS Florida. SN 21 & 25 have known South Carolina connections. Several of these early examples are found w/ mismatched numbers. This gun has cylinder 113 which is only 2 serial numbers removed from JEB Stewart’s, & loading assembly is 135. Regardless of the different numbers, this revolver has matching patina & no doubt grew up this way. The delicate engraved screws do not appear to have been turned which is so unusual, as most have seen hard use. CONDITION. very good overall, no original finish but sharp edges & markings w/ especially crisp patent marking. Grips were not removed as they are so well fit & didn’t want to disturb engraving on screw. All original grips in this serial range have been stamped internally “BAQUET” & imagine this is not an exception. Mechanically functional w/ crisp bright bore. PROVENANCE: ex-Gary Bizacky collection. (01-18461/JS). ANTIQUE. $25,000-30,000

CONFEDERATE BRIGADIER GENERAL THOMAS LANIER

Lot # 3009 (Sale Order: 10 of 669)

CLINGMAN’S SWORD, REVOLVER & CDV. This is a first time this grouping has ever been offered; it has been part of the collection displayed at Hickory Hill Plantation since ...morebeing purchased from direct family descent w/ short stay at Museum of the American Civil War in Richmond 2011-2012. The General’s German silver lion pommel Officer’s sword is likely one of a kind. The quillback blade is elaborately etched w/ unknown coat of arms and panoplies of arms. Sword is housed in its original German Silver scabbard which has numerous sm. cuts apparently from sword play. The General’s Colt Navy Revolver is SN# 58148, mfg. 1856 while Clingman was a Member of Congress. This Colt was a military purchased arm and possibly Clingman obtained it as he was on numerous congressional committees, if not at beginning of War. Brigadier General Thomas Lanier Clingman was born in Huntsville, NC, July 27, 1812. He graduated from the University of North Carolina in 1832 w/ high honors, after which he studied law, and then settled in the mountains of Asheville, NC. Clingman had a long career in politics prior to war serving in the U.S. House of Representative and the U.S. Senate. He obtained nicknames while in Washington such as “Prince of Politicians” & “Fire Eater from the Carolina Mountains”. When the war began Clingman was forced out of the Senate as he would not resign and wanted to continue fighting in Congress for Southern rights. He instead was elected Colonel of the 25th NC Infantry on Aug. 13, 1861. Thomas Lanier Clingman was promoted to Brigadier General on May 17, 1862 despite a lack of formal military training & was given command of the 54th & 55th NC Infantry. On Nov. 11, 1862, Brigadier General Clingman was named commander of a four regiment brigade comprised of the 8th, 31st, 51st & 61st NC Infantry in North Carolina. The demands on Lee’s Army as a result of Grant’s Overland Campaign inexorably drew the Brigade to VA and the front. Clingman and a portion of his men were the first troops to face Butler’s drive on Petersburg, resulting in the Bermuda Hundred “bottleneck”. Clingman’s Brigade was in the thickest of the fights for the next one hundred days, finally getting a chance to show how his NC Brigade had matured as a fighting force, fighting at Drewry’s Bluff, Cold Harbor, Ware Bottom Church, Petersburg June 16-18 and at the Crater. At Cold Harbor, though his entire staff was killed or wounded Clingman stood at the forefront and rallied his men while armed w/ only a fence rail & drove back Grant’s legions. On Aug. 19 General Clingman was severely wounded in the leg during the fighting at Globe Tavern but continued leading his command till the last battles in North Carolina w/ Joseph E. Johnston. Clingman’s papers are housed in the Southern Historical Collection at University of NC. General Clingman’s sword and revolver were exhibited at the American Civil War Center in Richmond, VA 2011-2012. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: comes w/ large file detailing family descent from General Thomas Clingman all the way through his great-great-grandsons w/ signed affidavits stating provenance & authenticity. Rarely are offered actual documented weapons carried during the Civil War by Confederate Generals. CONDITION: sword is very good overall. 32” Blade is overall gray with light staining, crisp etched panels, sharkskin grip is complete & intact w/ a couple small chipped reductions & wear at high spots, triple wire wrap is complete & tight, German silver hilt and scabbard show old cleaning w/ a silver/gray patina, numerous small nicks. Revolver was not disassembled but appears complete & original w/ dark brown/plum patina, good to very good overall, edges & markings are sharp, rolled cylinder naval battle scene is mostly discernable. Grips have crack repair on left side w/ discernable inspector cartouches on both sides. Heavy tacking marks on butt, two large chips to toes on left side and smaller chip to inside toe on right side. Sub inspector marks are visible on most parts. Mechanics are sluggish & need attention. Bore shows crisp rifling. The accompanying CDV is very good overall, w/ a partial revenue stamp on reverse. (01-17444/JS). ANTIQUE. $30,000-40,000.

WONDERFULLY HISTORIC COLT BREVETTE REVOLVER,

Lot # 3010 (Sale Order: 11 of 669)

HOLSTER, BELT & BOWIE KNIFE BELONGING TO COLONEL GEORGE ST. LEGER GRENFELL OF THE CONFEDERATE STATES CAVALRY. Colonel Grenfell was an extremely colorful British soldier o...moref fortune who served with the Confederate forces from 1862-1864. Grenfell claimed to have fought in Algeria, South America, Morocco, the Sepoy Mutiny and the Crimean War prior to his service with the Confederacy during the Civil War. He was a member of the Royal Guard of Paris and took part in the fighting that lead to the downfall of the Bourbon Monarchy. His next conflict was the Crimean War serving with Major General Hussy Vivian. Following action in the Crimea, he immigrated to South America where he took part in several revolutions throughout the continent. At the outbreak of the Civil War, he immigrated to the United States and joined the Confederacy. After a meeting with General Robert E. Lee, he met with Colonel John Hunt Morgan who made him his adjutant general. Colonel Grenfell was a groomsman in Colonel Morgan’s wedding. After service with Morgan in Kentucky, he joined General Braxton Bragg’s army in Tennessee and finally served with General J.E.B. Stuart in Virginia. He resigned his commission in 1864 and moved to the northern states where he helped lead a plot to establish Confederate governmental control over Ohio, Indiana and Illinois. When the nefarious plot was discovered, Grenfell was arrested, tried and sentenced to hang. The British government interceded on his behalf and had his sentence commuted to life in prison. He served his life sentence at Fort Jefferson Military Prison in the Dry Tortugas off Key West, Florida. He worked with Dr. Samuel Mudd, convicted Lincoln conspirator during a yellow fever epidemic at the prison. In 1868, Grenfell escaped from Fort Jefferson and was presumed drowned as the audacious British officer was never heard from again. The Colt Brevette revolver is cal. 36. S# 4832. Bbl. measures approx. 7 1/4". Barrel is marked on the top flat, “COLT BREVETTE”. Cylinder scene is a bit light but clearly visible. All serial numbers match. The silver plated backstrap is engraved, “Col. George St. Leger Grenfell Aide de Camp”. Silver plated trigger guard. Original leather holster with front flap that slides through a 2 1/2" x 1/2” retention strap. Rear belt loop may be a period repair and is held on with 2 iron rivets at the top and 3 at the bottom. Black leather officers belt with 2 piece interlocking buckle of pre-Civil War manufacture likely for militia service. Buckle is ovoid in form with a central eagle and shield. See figure 209, pg. 215 of Kerksis. Bowie knife measures 15 5/8" overall with a 9 1/2" blade. The knife appears to be of South American manufacture. and was likely obtained by Colonel Grenfell during his service in one of the South American revolutions. The blade has a 3 1/2" false edge and a shallow wide double fuller. The hilt is silver plated brass with an etched decorated guard. The grip has a 1/2" ferrule at the base and a pommel that appears to be a stylized head of a South American native tribesman. The horn grip has several metal studs that appear to be pewter. The leather scabbard has a plated tip with etching that matches the crossguard. The throat is etched on 1 side with an English crown, and the other side has a highly stylized monogram that reads, “G St L G”. CONDITION: the revolver has traces of blued finish mixed with lightly oxidized brown. The silver plating on the grip strap and trigger guard are 95%. Grips show expected dents and dings but seem to have original finish. Mechanics function well. Bore is fair with strong rifling. Holster is well used with moderate to heavy wear but no losses. Stitching is loose in spots and there is notable flaking to the leather finish. Belt is solid but has flaking to the finish. Buckle has 85% original gilt with some darker oxidized areas. Knife shows expected loss of plating on the higher areas. Blade has a light gray finish with scattered darkened areas. Grip is complete and solid with 1 small missing stud. Scabbard is quite sound with about 30% finish on the mounts. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: a large folder with many pages describing the history and exploits of Colonel Grenfell along with a 352 pg. book titled “Colonel Grenfell’s Wars” by Stephen Z. Starr. PROVENANCE: From the Renowned Collection of Allen & Robin Wandling. (01-17986/BF). ANTIQUE. $15,000-25,000.

S.C. ROBINSON SHARPS CARBINE MANUFACTURED

Lot # 3015 (Sale Order: 16 of 669)

BY THE CONFEDERATE GOVERNMENT. Cal. 52. S# 3644. Bbl. 21”. Late in 1862, the C.S. Robinson Arms Manufactory of Richmond, VA entered into a contract w/ the Confederate gov...moreernment to produce Sharps type breech loading carbines. The company produced approximately 1900 carbines prior to selling its factory to the Confederate government in March of 1863. This carbine was produced at the former Robinson Arms Manufactory by the Confederate government which manufactured approximately 3,000 more carbines. Serial numbers of the Confederate government manufactured carbines began where the numbering of the Robinson carbines left off. Bbl. has a front and rear sight & is marked, “RICHMOND VA” just in back of the rear sight. The receiver is marked on the tang, “3644” & is also marked on the rear of the side plate, “3644”. All iron parts are complete & original & the brass buttplate & bbl. band are also original to the gun. Rear sling swivel is present. Original, untouched stock. CONDITION: bbl. & breech have a medium gray, lightly mottled patina w/ a few scattered areas of very light oxidation. Action functions well & holds both full & half cock. Brass has a pleasing mustard patina. Stock has expected scuffs & scrapes but no major breaks or damage. Good bore w/ strong rifling. It is very difficult to find Confederate arms in untouched & unaltered condition. This example is one of the few surviving specimens in private hands that has survived in its original, as issued, state. (01-18775/BF). ANTIQUE. $10,000-14,000.

CONFEDERATE BRASS FRAME BREECH LOADING

Lot # 3016 (Sale Order: 17 of 669)

MORSE CARBINE. Cal. 50. S# 751. This is the standard model of the Morse carbine. These rare Confederate breech loading carbines utilized Morse patent 50 caliber self cont...moreained reusable percussion cartridges. The Third Model (or Type III) Morse carbine, produced at the State Military Works in Greenville, South Carolina, is distinguished by a more sophisticated locking & firing mechanism than earlier models. The most improved mechanism is the presence of a flanged iron rod connected to an iron plate w/ knurled edges which covers the forward top portion of the brass operating lever & iron catch on frame. The serial number range on type III carbines range from about 400 to end of production about 1,000. This is a nice well patinaed all matching gun which would make a nice addition to any Confederate collection. CONDITION: good to very good overall. All S# parts matching along w/ matching assembly marks internally. Gun appears original & complete w/ restored hammer spur & repaired break at breech hinge. S# has been engraved at breech repair where it was lost during braising. Iron has dark “attic condition” brown/plum patina. Brass has mottled dark mustard patina w/ scattered cosmetic blemishes Stock is well fit, weathered w/ hand worn patina. Complete w/ rod & cleaning jag in butt. Mechanically functional w/ well discerned rifled bore w/ pitting. Butt stock has cryptic “N” well struck rear of lower tang. (01-16628/JS). ANTIQUE. $10,000-12,000.

RARE CONFEDERATE MUZZLE LOADING BILHARZ CARBINE.

Lot # 3017 (Sale Order: 18 of 669)

Cal. 58. S# E 65. Round 22" bbl. surcharged “CSA / P”. This carbine is a copy of the US Model 1855 made at Pittsylvania Court House, Virginia in small quantities. These c...morearbines typically come w/ pewter nose caps, & sometimes early numbers w/ brass nose caps, such as this one. Gun is serial numbered internally on bottom of bbl. "E 44" w/ matching “E 44” on stock rear of trigger guard. These guns typically saw very hard use w/ no discernible markings & poor stocks. This example has seen little honest use but well cared for & has "CSA / P" stamped on breech, though “CSA” is weak. Long mistakenly referred to as D. C. Hodgkins carbines & so listed in the early texts. Murphy & Madaus in their definitive 2002 text "Confederate Carbines & Musketoons", dedicate a chapter to this manufacturer which is found in provenance. CONDITION: good to very good overall, iron has overall brown patina w/ pitting especially at breech mostly obscuring “CSA” though “P” is well discerned. The lock is not numbered other than Roman numerals & is probably replaced though it fits well, lock refinished. Stock has inset repair opposite lock, otherwise stock has hand worn patina & superior condition to most Bilharz w/ sharp edges. Mechanically fine w/ good rifled bore. (01-18464/JS). ANTIQUE. $8,000-14,000.
