IMPORTANT EARLY FIRST MODEL WINCHESTER 1873 LEVER

Lot # 4007 (Sale Order: 7 of 616)

ACTION RIFLE S# 19. Cal. .44 WCF (44-40). S# 19. Bbl. 24" octagon. Rare first production run of the Model 1873 rifle. Barrel with 2 line address, full magazine, German si...morelver Rocky Mountain front sight and original reverse mounted, short sporting rear sight with checkered edges and reverse cut sighting notch. Early forged iron receiver is blue finish and features mortised dust cover with 1/2" raised fine-checkered thumb print panel. Casehardened lever and hammer. Set trigger without safety block. Bolt is the early type with a removable firing pin bushing. Top tang is unmarked and has the rare early feature of two threaded holes for tang sight. Left receiver plate is period engraved “THOMAS LYONS” in script. Mounted with nicely figured, uncheckered American walnut with crescent buttplate and trap. A single sling swivel of the period is mounted on the toeline but is not mentioned in the records. Left side of stock is period adorned with what appears to be a stylized flag constructed of tiny punched stars. Assembly number “16” was observed on left side of lower tang under the wood, on top tang channel of buttstock and inside toe of buttplate. Serial number “19” and “Model 1873” on bottom tang are hand engraved in script and lever latch threaded through tang which is correct for the earliest First Models. Accompanied by a 1992 Cody Firearms Museum letter and 2020 Research Sheet which lists this rifle as found with Set trigger, Blued finish, Long stock and Target 2-3/4 inch. Received in warehouse Feb. 27, 1874 and shipped March 28, 1874 to order #1182. The entry “Long stock” most likely refers to the use of Model 1866 wood on the first run of early '73s. It measures 13-1/4" from trigger to center of buttplate which is longer than the standard '73 production specification but the same length as the '66. Occurrence of the single sling swivel likely a '66 remnant and thus not mentioned in records. The notation “Target 2-3/4 inch” is presumed to be test firing prior to being received at the warehouse, resulting in a 2-3/4” group. Target notations are seen in early 1873 records. Only 18 of the first run of 50 guns were received in 1873, and 108 the following year, due largely to issues with production and development of the new centerfire .44-40 cartridge. The Model of 1873 was first listed in the 1875 catalog and began advertising to the public in the highly regarded Army and Navy Journal and other periodicals the same year. The sideplate inscription ID is believed to be that of noted Silver City, NM mining magnate and cattle baron, Tom Lyons, of the 1.5 million acre Lyons & Campbell Ranch. Lyons was a talented machinist and self-taught mining engineer who headed west with a group of investors from Kenosha Wisconsin to exploit the rich copper and silver deposits of rough and tumble Grant County, NM the early 1870s. A successful businessman, Lyons sold his mining and foundry interests and began to buy up all of the best grazing land in the Gila River Valley with partner Angus Campbell in the 1880s. This partnership began their almost 40 year endeavor that would overshadow all other ranching operations in the southwest. In 1917 Tom Lyons was mysteriously murdered in El Paso. TX by a hired assassin. He had been a controversial figure in the region from the onset and likely had many enemies. Several interesting books and various articles outline his legacy. One such book, Triumph and Tragedy: A History of Thomas Lyons and the LCs, authored by Lyons' direct descendants accompanies this lot. This firearm is pictured in "WINCHESTER'S NEW MODEL OF 1873 A TRIBUTE" by James Gordon on pages 134, 173, 211, 351 & 461. It is also mentioned on page 337. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: Cody Museum letter; 2020 Research sheet; Lyon's book "Triumph and Tragedy: A History of Thomas Lyons and the LCs.". CONDITION: action retains well preserved blue finish in protected areas around side plates, balance shows an appropriate age related fading to gray/brown with scattered small nicks & handling marks. Barrel & magazine tube also retain small amounts of blue in protected areas with faded portions showing small dents, marks & spots. Forearm cap has gray appearance with open swivel hole. Hammer & lever retain 30% nickel finish. Trigger retains lightly faded original blue. Unsanded stock & forearm have appropriately aged & weathered appearance showing dents, scratches, handling marks & small chips. Forearm has tight half length crack at bottom extending from the forearm cap. Rear sight elevator is not present. Dust cover does not retract when action is cycled, however action operates smoothly when dust cover is fully opened by hand. Set trigger operates properly & has appropriate light pull. The bore retains strong well defined rifling having a slightly darkened appearance with some scattered very light pitting. PROVENANCE: Ex. Felix Bedlan Collection. (01-18402/WD). ANTIQUE. $20,000-30,000.

WELL DOCUMENTED WINCHESTER MODEL 1873 ONE OF ONE

Lot # 4008 (Sale Order: 8 of 616)

THOUSAND DISPLAYED AT THE ORPHEUM THEATER FOR THE PREMIERE OF “WINCHESTER 73” & LATER EXHIBITED AT THE CODY FIREARMS MUSEUM. Cal. 44 WCF (44-40). S# 30783. During the 195...more0’s Steve Hannigan prepared a report of "1 of 1000 Model 1873". This report is the result of the One of One Thousand Search, which promoted Universal-International’s feature film "Winchester 73" starring Jimmy Stewart. This rare rifle was number 18 among the One of One Thousands discovered during the movie publicity search. This search fostered the popularity of gun collecting as we know it today. At the time of the 1950 movie search, this rifle was owned by US Navy Cmdr. T.R. Jordan, of Seattle, Washington and in the notarized letter to Universal, Cmdr. Jordan states he acquired the rifle a few years back (1946 or 1947). This exact Winchester One of One Thousand was at the "Orpheum Theater" in a glass case for the initial release of the movie in 1950 "everyone stopped in the theater to view the rifle & Wanted Poster in the lobby". The promotional search for the surviving Winchester One of One Thousand by Universal created far more enthusiasm than the original sales promotion conducted by Winchester. The original marketing by Winchester for the One of One Thousand rifles targeted clients seeking a superior level of performance from their rifles. The firearms were built around barrels found to have extra merit & built into special guns with set triggers & extra finish. This rifle exhibits even further scarcity with a 2" longer than standard 24" octagon barrel which is engraved in script font "One of One Thousand" on the breech end of the top barrel flat. This marking is highlighted by vine type foliate scroll with punch dot backgrounds on the adjacent flats & around the muzzle. Muzzle & breech end of the barrel inlaid with silver bands. Sights consist of a gold washed Beach's combination front & short semi buckhorn V notch rear sight with serrated edges. Full length magazine. First Model action having a mortised thumb print dust cover & set trigger. The factory “XX” stock & forearm are of non-checkered tiger striped American black walnut and fitted with crescent steel trapdoor buttplate that holds a four piece cleaning rod. This is the only One of One Thousand known with this stock configuration. Left inside of lower tang is marked with assembly number "732" & wood grade marking "XX". This rifle was recently displayed at the Buffalo Bill Center of the West in Cody, Wyoming for the grand reopening of the Firearms Museum. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: Cody Firearms Museum letter dated Nov. 02, 2017. This letter lists the following information for serial number 30783 “Type: Rifle / Barrel Type: Octagon / Barrel Length: 26 inches / Trigger: Set / XX Stock / Sights: Sporting leaf / Casehardened / 1 of 1000 / Received in warehouse on July, 24 1878 / Shipped from warehouse on August 02, 1878, Order number 12475”. Other information includes copies of Winchester ledgers pertaining to the One of One Thousands, a list of known owners dated Dec. 31, 1952, & a letter from Steve Hannigan to J. T. Boone of Winchester listing the owners. Additionally there are copies of several letters of correspondence between Cmdr. Jordan & Steve Hannigan regarding discovery of this rifle in July 1950. CONDITION: metal retains some light & fading blue in protected areas with exposed areas fading to a mild gray patina showing minor handling parts. The Beeches front sight retains much of its gold finish. The wood is lightly sanded & restored showing scattered fine scratches & mild marks. The stock shows a couple of very sm. chips at both sides of top tang & along left side of lower tang with a sm. hairline crack at right rear of top tang. Front right side of forearm has a documented added wood repair that was referenced in famed author & retailer Theodore Dexter's 1958 advertisement of this rifle. Smooth mechanics. Bore retains sharp intact rifling showing scattered spots of minor pitting. PROVENANCE: Cmdr. T.R. Jordan, USN - 1947; F. Theodore Dexter – 1958; Hank Vogel collection – 1968; William F. Mitchell Collection – 1968; Leroy Merz; Collection of Dr. Edmund Lewis; James D. Julia Auction - Oct. 2017; The Esteemed Personal Collection of Native South Texan, Vicente Sepulveda. Thanks to Cmdr. Jordan's & Steve Hannigan's meticulous records & extensive additional research at the Cody Museum Library by the current owner, this authentic rifle is now one of the best documented One of One Thousands in existence. This is a rare opportunity to own a One of One Thousand discovered during the 1950 "Winchester '73" movie search, the actual rifle displayed at the Orpheum Theater during the movie premier and perhaps one of the most prized American made collectible rifles in existence. PROVENANCE: From The Vince Sepulveda Collection. (01-17685/DS). ANTIQUE. $90,000-150,000.
