Special Order Winchester Model 1886 Lever Action Rifle

Lot # 3000 (Sale Order: 1 of 626)

Documented Special Order Winchester Model 1886 Lever Action Rifle with Scarce Plain Pistol Grip Stock

The Winchester letter describes this rifle, as: "Rifle, 40/65, Octagon barrel, Plain trigger" and "Plain pistol grip" and shipped on September 21, 1891. The bottom of the pistol grip has an ebony inlay. The barrel has a Lyman "Hunting" front sight with colored bead and a buckhorn rear sight with serrated edges and screw-adjustable center piece. A Lyman folding combination rear sight with coarsely knurled stem is mounted on the receiver tang. The top barrel flat is roll-stamped with the two-line address ahead of the rear sight. The caliber "40-65 W.C.F." is roll-stamped between the rear sight and the receiver. The 1884 and 1885 patent dates are stamped on the lower tang behind the trigger and the serial number is stamped in script numerals between the tang screws. A plain pistol grip stock is a rarely seen special order feature on Winchester Model 1886 rifles.

Class: Antique

Very fine. The barrel has 85% original blue finish with some very minor edge wear. The colored bead in the front sight blade is broken. The blue finish on the bottom of the magazine between the barrel band and the receiver is thin with some scattered light pitting and patches of age discoloration. There are traces of cold blue on some of the pitted areas. The bolt, extractor and trigger have 98% of the blue finish. 60% fire blue finish remains on the loading gate. The forearm cap, receiver, hammer and lever retain 90% of the casehardened finish with strong case colors. The crescent buttplate has 70% of the faded case colors. The forearm and pistol grip stock are very good with 80% of the original finish. Wear is limited to a few relatively minor scratches and handling marks. This is a very fine example of a documented Winchester Model 1886 Lever Action Rifle with scarce, special order, plain pistol grip stock.

Winchester Model 1866 Lever Action Musket

Lot # 3002 (Sale Order: 3 of 626)

Fine Winchester Model 1866 Lever Action Musket

This is a fine example of an original Model 1866 Winchester musket manufactured in 1870. This is a mid production Third Model with the block serial number stamped behind the trigger. The 1866 muskets are a very rare rifle as they were the least popular of the Model 1866s with most being sold to foreign customers, especially to South America. This scarce example as noted was evidently sold to Belgium as it carries the Belgium proofs on the left side of the barrel and receiver. They consist of a "*/A", "crown/R", "perron", and the "crown/E.L.G." proof from the Liege Proof House in Belgium. The receiver also has the same small "*/A" proof. It has the earlier recessed barrel, with the top of the barrel marked with the Second Pattern markings of "WINCHESTER'S REPEATING ARMS, NEWHAVEN. CT./ KING'S IMPROVEMENT-PATENTED-MARCH 29.1866. OCTOBER. 16. 1860". It has the correct 27 inch round barrel with the magazine tube that stops about 2 3/4 inches from the muzzle allowing this rifle to have a full 17 round capacity. The barrel is fitted with three barrel bands, along with the "First Pattern large sling loops mounted on the middle band and lower buttstock area. As noted it has the Third Pattern receiver with the block serial number located behind the trigger, original rimfire firing pin with the Second Pattern breech bolt with the crosslot on the front end, early trigger with the mainspring screw on the end with the early beveled loading gate. It has the Henry pattern two position folding rear sight with the staff marked 2-8 (200-800 yards) with the 900 yard sighting notch on top. It is fitted with a straight grain American walnut stock with 3/4 length forearm. The buttstock has the musket style brass buttplate with the sliding trap door with an original four section brass tipped cleaning rod.

Class: Antique

Fine overall with 30% of the original blue finish still remaining on the barrel and magazine tube with the majority of the blue in the protected areas under the forend and the front end of the magazine tube, with the balance of the metal showing a light brown/gray mixed patina. The entire receiver, side plates and buttplate are all very fine with an excellent attractive dark aged yellow patina finish overall. The loading lever and hammer both have browned out with hints of finish. The buttstock and forend are both very fine showing a nice original matching medium brown oil finish mixed with some minor handling marks and scratches overall. The wood to metal fit is tight. This is a fine example of a Winchester Model 1866 musket.

Holland & Holland Winchester Deluxe Model 1876 .50 Express Rifle

Lot # 3012 (Sale Order: 13 of 626)

Unique Holland & Holland Retailer Marked Special Order Winchester Deluxe Model 1876 .50 Express Lever Action "English Short" Rifle

This English Short Express Rifle Model 1876 is configured similarly to the Model 1886 Lightweight in that it has a short 22 inch barrel (although not tapered), rifle style forearm, short magazine tube, and shotgun butt. A similar example is pictured on page 238 of "The Winchester Book" by Madis. In the data discussed on page 253 of the above book, Madis notes that only one of each 800 had a shorter than average barrel. The factory letter lists this special order Model 1876 with a 22 inch round barrel in highly desirable .50-95 caliber, "inside finish," plain trigger, checkered pistol grip stock, half magazine, shotgun buttplate, and casehardened receiver when received in the warehouse on July 10, 1882 and shipped on July 12 with 89 other arms to order number 32944. The barrel is fitted with a dovetail blade front sight and three leaf rear sight graduated to 300 yards and stamped with the two-line address/patent dates ahead of the rear sight on top and "50 CAL" and British proofs at the breech. An additional "Crown/V" proof is on the frame. The second model receiver features a dust cover guide rail attached to the receiver with two screws. The dust cover has the Holland & Holland marking: "SIGHTED BY/HOLLAND & HOLLAND,/98 NEW BOND STREET,/LONDON." An included Holland & Holland letter states this rifle was not found in their records. The forearm and pistol grip stock are deluxe walnut and feature "H" style checkering. The buttstock (could not be removed) has an ebony grip insert and a steel shotgun buttplate. The .50-95 Winchester Express was the largest caliber available for the Model 1876 and proved popular with big and dangerous game hunters. Many Model 1876 rifles chambered for this powerful cartridge were shipped to England and then found their way to Africa and India where they were often employed against big cats. Theodore Roosevelt loved his .45-75 '76, but he and other Americans scorned the .50 Express, and thus, the Model 1876 was only produced in limited numbers chambered for that cartridge compared to the smaller calibers.

Class: Antique

Very good plus. The barrel retains 25% original blue finish with the balance a smooth brown-gray patina. 30% original niter blue remains on the loading gate. The hammer, receiver, and lever retain 40% original case colors. There is some minor pitting mostly on the receiver. The reoiled wood is very good with minimal handling marks and recut checkering. Mechanically excellent. A highly desirable deluxe Model 1876 .50 Express "English short" rifle with Holland & Holland retailer marking.

CT./KING'S-IMPROVEMENT-PATENTED-MARCH 25.1866. OCTOBER 16. 1860" between the lower barrel band and the rear sight. This musket was engraved by Conrad or John Ulrich and features detailed scroll engraving on a punch-dot background on the sides, top and bottom of the receiver, upper and lower tang, cartridge elevator and buttplate heel. The left side plate has a round vignette depicting a standing pronghorn antelope. The engraving on this musket is illustrated and described on page 93 of "WINCHESTER ENGRAVING" by R.L. Wilson. In the description the author states: "Muskets are among the most sought after types in the field of Winchester engraving".

Class: Antique

Fine. This rare engraved musket retains 90% of the period thick applied nickel-plated finish with some scattered flaking. The finish wear is most pronounced on the loading gate which has 40% of the nickel plating remaining and the buttplate which has 75% of the plating with finish wear on the heel and flaking on the body. The expertly executed scroll and game vignette remains sharp. The barrel address exhibits pitting through the plating, leading the writer to draw the conclusion that it is replated, most likely in the period. The straight grain walnut stock and forearm very good overall condition. The forearm has several shallow bruises and light handling marks. The stock shows less handling wear than the forearm but appears to have been re-varnished. This is a fully documented example of a very fine factory engraved Winchester lever action Model 1866 Musket.

Extremely Scarce Venditti Second Model Lever Action Pistol

Lot # 3018 (Sale Order: 19 of 626)

Extremely Scarce Venditti Second Model Lever Action Pistol

This extremely scarce lever action pistol is one of only 350 manufactured across the first and second models of Italian maker Pietro Venditti. This pistol is similar in many ways to the American Volcanic Pistols, and until recently was thought to have influenced Horace Smith and Daniel Wesson in their design. It is now surmised, that Venditti did not have his first experience with firearms design until after his release from prison in 1860, well after Smith & Wesson had patented their design. This is supported by the lack of any appearance of this mechanism if the "Catalogue of the Great Exhibition" printed in 1851 where Smith and or Wesson supposedly got the idea, as well as the fact that no documentation exists showing either man leaving the United States at that time. For more information on this subject see pages 145-148 of "Volcanic Firearms: Predecessor to the Winchester Rifle" by Edmund Lewis and Stephen Rutter. The barrel bears the first model style marking "SISTEMA VENDITTI" on the top flat. This marking is flanked by factory engraved scrollwork that extends to the top of the frame, frame sides at the front, side plates, and back strap. The frame is brass with iron side plates. The pistol has fixed sights, a 10-shot tubular magazine, two piece checkered grips with escutcheons, and lanyard swivel. The follower retention screw is absent.

Class: Antique

Very good. Scattered brown patina on the barrel with the balance of the blue parts grey with flashes of blue finish. The frame shows a dull patina across the balance. Scattered areas of pitting throughout. The wood is also very good with some dings and scratches. Firing pin does not reset, otherwise mechanically functions properly.Provenance: Dr. Gerald Klaz collection.

Engraved Smith & Wesson No. 2 Lever Action Repeating Pistol

Lot # 3019 (Sale Order: 20 of 626)

Rare, Documented Early Production Smith & Wesson No. 2 Lever Action Repeating Pistol with Elaborate Panel Scene Engraving

This No. 2 Lever Action Repeating Pistol was manufactured by Horace Smith and Daniel B. Wesson c. 1854. This pistol is illustrated and described on page 27 of "VOLCANIC FIREARMS" by Edmund Lewis and Stephen Rutter. The description notes that the engraving on this pistol is more elaborate than the engraving typically found on standard S&W No. 2 Lever Action pistols and features a hunter in the vignette on the scroll and leaf engraving on the right side plate and a stylized deer in the scrollwork on the left side plate. This Type I, No. 2 pistol has the early production features which include: (1) frame with pronounced hump behind the trigger, (2) early style cartridge carrier with single spring lever screw, (3) loading lever with finger spur, (4) uncrowned muzzle, (5) flat magazine lock spring and (6) round, slotted, magazine follower. The pistol has an .41 caliber, eight-inch part-round/part-octagon barrel with steel, pinch-top front sight. The top barrel flats lack S&W legend and patent markings. The frame has a square ejection port and simple, screw-fastened, rear sight. The hammer has fine, hand-cut, knurling on the spur. "PATENT" is stamped on both sides of the loading lever. The two piece, piano-finished, rosewood grips have flared bottoms. The serial number, "47" is stamped in two locations on the left side of the butt beneath the grips, on the inside of both grips and on the back face of the rear sight. The barrel is browned and the frame blued. The hammer, trigger and lever were blued or casehardened. Smith & Wesson made less than 500 No. 2 Lever Action Volcanic Repeating Pistols. Early, Type I, pistols are very rare. The distinctive engraving and markings on this pistol make it unique.

Class: Antique

Very good. This extremely rare pistol is all original and retains traces of the faded brown finish on the barrel. The barrel surfaces are smooth with sharp edges and have an attractive gray-brown patina. The delicate blue finish on the frame, hammer, trigger and lever has worn to a silver-gray patina with scattered age discoloration in protected areas. The metal surfaces are smooth and free from pitting. The delicate, finely cut scrollwork and vignettes are crisp. The fine flared rosewood grips retain more than half of the original piano finish with scattered minor handling marks. The action functions fine. This is a good looking and well documented example of a rare, early production, S&W No. 2 Lever Action Repeating Pistol with one-of-a-kind factory dual panel scene engraving and patent markings. Provenance: Dr. Gerald Klaz collection.

Engraved Winchester Model 1866 Lever Action Carbine

Lot # 3021 (Sale Order: 22 of 626)

Documented L.D. Nimschke Signed Mexican Eagle Engraved Winchester Model 1866 Lever Action Saddle Ring Carbine

Manufactured in 1873 and featuring an elaborate Mexican eagle themed engraving that, according to Winchester expert and author George Madis, was done by famed 19th century master engraver L.D. Nimschke, as it has Nimschke's initials ("L.D.N.") signed on the lower tang. It is not often that we catalog works signed by Nimschke. The carbine is pictured and identified in Madis' "The Winchester Book" on page 80. As Madis points out, "The Mexican eagle and scrolls are typical of L.D.N. engraving on the model 66. The dark spots surrounding the eagle are stars applied with a punch, as are the stars inside the entwined borders. All of the major lines on this gun were engraved with a single-point tool. Most of the shading is cut one line at a time, with some shading done with a liner. Expert shading is the mark of a master and this gun is an outstanding example of such shading." The carbine is engraved in a similar style and pattern as two notable Model 1866 carbines, nos. 13187 and 17144, attributed to famed 19th century engraver L.D. Nimschke's shop, as pictured and identified in R.L. Wilson's "The Book of Winchester Engraving" on pages 43 and 44. No. 13187 is inscribed to Maximilian (1832-1867), the Austrian royal who became emperor of Mexico in 1864 and was executed in June 1867. (Of special note, Maximilian's legendary L.D. Nimschke shop engraved and relief carved Model 1866 carbine no. 21921 is in this auction.) Like this carbine, nos. 13187 and 17144 are decorated with profuse floral scrollwork on a punch dot background along with a Mexican eagle motif on the left side plate. Even the entwined border ahead of the Mexican eagle appears on all three carbines. A smoke pull of a similar Mexican eagle motif on a Model 1866 is found in R.L. Wilson's "L.D. Nimschke Firearms Engraver" on page 55. Additional engraving patterns on this carbine include a star burst on top of the receiver, cross hatching on the cartridge elevator, and rope pattern on the upper tang. The carbine is fitted with a blade front sight, folding two-leaf rear sight and a saddle ring on the left side of the receiver. The bolt features a centerfire firing pin. The top of the barrel is stamped with the two-line Winchester address/King's improvement patent dates marking. The brass buttplate has a trapdoor (cleaning rod not included) and a flourish of scrollwork on the tang.

Class: Antique

Very good. The barrel and magazine have a smooth dark brown patina. The brass has an attractive mellow appearance with traces of the gold remaining. The engraving is crisp. The wood is also very good with some hairline cracks mostly on the buttstock and some minor dings and scratches. Mechanically fine. An outstanding work of Nimschke signed firearms art that uses the distinctive Model 1866 brass receiver as its canvas.

Factory Engraved Winchester Deluxe Model 1873 Rifle

Lot # 3022 (Sale Order: 23 of 626)

Well-Documented, Special Order Factory Engraved Monogram Winchester Deluxe Model 1873 Lever Action Rifle with Desirable Freund Sights and Buffalo Bill Historical Center Letter

The accompanying Buffalo Bill Historical Center letter states that Winchester records lists this special order deluxe Model 1873 rifle with an octagon barrel, set trigger, casehardened receiver, checkered pistol grip stock, shotgun buttplate, half magazine, and factory engraved "CP" monogram when received in the warehouse on June 25, 1883 and shipped the same day. The rifle is pictured and identified in George Madis' "The Winchester Handbook" on page 29 and R.L. Wilson's "Winchester Engraving" on page 193. Both publications cited the factory engraved "CP" monogram on the left side plate. Wilson remarked, "Monograms by themselves were seldom encountered in the course of researching 'Winchester Engraving.'" Remarking on the rifle's rare special order configuration, Madis stated, "Occasionally we find a Winchester with nearly every special feature available." Madis also noted the rare and highly desirable Freund knife blade and open rear sights fitted on the barrel. Like many in the American firearms industry in the 18th and 19th centuries, the Freund brothers Frank W. and George were German immigrants. They had various temporary shop locations as they followed the Union Pacific westward and established more permanent shops in Denver, Colorado, and Cheyenne, Wyoming, where they regularly modified firearms, particularly Sharps rifles, to fit their customer's needs. In addition to mechanical alterations and creating new configurations, the Freunds also designed new sights. The front and rear barrel sights feature Freund patent markings. The tang peep sight is a special order Winchester 62-A sight. This is a third model with dust cover rail integral to the receiver, dust cover with serrations at the rear and single set trigger. The forearm and pistol grip stock are XX deluxe walnut and feature "H" style checkering. The buttstock features an ebony grip insert and a steel shotgun buttplate. The left side of the lower tang is stamped "XX 1029 S." The assembly number "1029" is also stamped on the stock inlet and buttplate. Includes 1983 dated correspondence between previous owner Judge James M. Macnish, Jr. and R.L. Wilson related to the use of this rifle in "Winchester Engraving."

Class: Antique

Very good. The barrel retains 20% original blue finish with the balance a smooth brown patina. Traces of original niter blue remain on the loading gate. Traces of original case colors remain on the hammer and receiver in the protected areas with stronger amounts of original colors around the trigger and on the lower tang. The engraving is crisp. The revarnished wood is very good with a repair visible at the stock toe, a short hairline stress crack at the upper tang, minor dings and scratches and some wear to the checkering. Mechanically excellent. A well-documented, rarely encountered deluxe Model 1873 with several special order features such as factory engraved monogram, set trigger, and peep sight along with the extra bonus of just as rare and desirable Freund sights. This Winchester has a lot going for it!
