Kerman Iran
Lot # 1 (Sale Order: 1 of 175)
Rug # 1, 140173, 2.11 x 4.9, Kerman Iran circa 1975. Hand spun cotton warp and weft support all hand spun wool with a-symmetrical knotting that has a slight warp offset. Dyes employed are vegetal with traditional colors such as the medium purple field. A very traditional central medallion in an open field with the broken borders that conform to the medallion. This carpet show some wear but has a lot of life left. Appraised Value $495.00.
Kerman Shah
Lot # 2 (Sale Order: 2 of 175)
Rug # 2, BRC 37, 3.5 x 5, Kerman Shah Iran circa 1950. All cotton warp and weft with a a-symmetrical full warp offset knot. Vegetal dyes are utilized with the Tabriz orange standing out on an off white field with this open field medallion design. Thin but sound condition keynotes this finely woven rug. Appraised Value $440.00.
Beluch Afghan
Lot # 3 (Sale Order: 3 of 175)
Rug # 3, BRC 13, 6.4 x 7.10, Belouch Afghanistan circa 1980. Hand spun wool warps and weft support an all hand spun wool a-symmetrical knot. Vegetal dyes along with the Turkoman eye for their terra-cotta red as a main field color are not a disappointment, the well placed use of blue, and white and green have been well thought out as well. This design is influenced by old Persian Oushak carpets and utilized in the main border we have a meandering with or scroll type border that some refer to as the scorpion. Some wear is evident but not an issue. Appraised Value $750.00.

Rug # 4, 900100, 3.2 x 4.6, Balouch prayer rug Iran circa 1980. An all hand spun wool warp and weft foundation supports the all hand spun wool a-symmetrically knotted pile. Vegetal dyes from the Iran region have rendered a deep red that is the main color high lighted by both white and black blue coloration. Woven by Afghan Turkoman people with their classic tree of life motif prayer rug design while living on Iranian soil is hinted at booth with color and the use of a wool selvage rather than the goat hair multi border so often used by these people. Appraised Value $696.00.

Rug # 5, Hamidi 2, 3.10 x 5.5, Baktiari Garden panel design Iran circa 1970. Hand spun cotton warp and weft foundation with an all hand spun wool a-symmetrical knotted pile. Dyes employed are vegetal with a terra cotta red and off white dominating. This garden design is a favorite of the Baktiari whom see this as an actual garden with trees “cypress”, vines and flowers filling the panels. Appraised Value $616.00.

Rug # 7, 900155, 3.5 x 4.6, Gabbeh Turkey, circa 1995. The all hand spun wool warp and weft support an all hand spun wool pile with a symmetrical knot. Vegetal dyes are the strong suit here as design is left to a border of repetitive colored squares. Appraised Value $528.00.

Rug # 8, 80026, 3.7 x 5.9, Gabbeh Iran circa 1950. The all hand spun cotton foundation supports an all hand spun wool a-symmetrically knotted pile. Vegetal dyes are also mixed possible with some aniline dyes as the red and blue dye has stained the warps but without harm to the value, it just helps with dating. The design is influenced by the Qashqai with the medallion very obviously so but the web with its lack of a goat or wool warps but of few of the missing pieces to that puzzle. Appraised Value $765.00.

An all cotton warp and weft support a hand spun wool pile knotted in the traditional rod technique associated so reliably with Tibetan woven carpets and rugs. Chemical dyes have been employed as vegetal dyes are very rare with this area of the world. Appraised Value $695.00.

Rug # 10, 130303, 2 x 3, Kerman Iran circa 1975. Hand spun cotton warp and weft foundation supporting a-symmetrical all hand spun wool knotting with a slight warp offset pile. Dyes employed are vegetal with a off white pile that is accented with mauve and blue. The design is a Kerman open field that held popularity in the fifties. Appraised Value $575.00.
Kerdar Iran

Rug # 11, 60014, 3.6 x 9 Kerdar Iran circa 1960. The warp and weft foundation is comprised of hand spun cotton and the pile is a-symmetrically knotted with all hand spun wool. Woven in the Hamadon district of Iran “NE” of the city is a small town Kerdar whose design (the lighting bolt) is very distinctive. Vegetal dyes are evident with a traditional color pallet for this carpet. Appraised Value $1,250.00.
Andakoy

Rug # 12, 900148, 3.3 x 4.8, Andakoy Afghanistan circa 1985. An all hand spun wool warp and weft foundation supports the all hand spun wool a-symmetrically knotted pile with slight warp offset. Vegetal dyes rendered a terra-cotta main color that is so loved in Afghanistan over the bright Iranian red which we also see in this rug. The Andakoy are a sub tribe of the Turkoman people and are represented in this carpet by the two guls found in the main field. Appraised Value $1,327.00.

Rug # 13, 920104, 4.2 x 6.8, Afghanistan Balouch circa 1985. The all hand spun wool warp and weft supports an all hand spun wool pile a-symmetrically knotted with slight warp offset. Dyes employed are vegetal and show a very different side of the norm as they are very bright with lighter colors. The design is very unlike what one hopes to see (lack of a tribal identity) but well done, it is believed that the style here is politically influenced both with design and colors utilized. The trend in the last few years has reversed back to tribal design but with a much finer quality and defused tribal gul both major and minor. Appraised Value $1,162.50.

Rug # 15, 842, 4 x 6.10, Gabbeh Iran, circa 1970. The all wool warp and weft supports an all wool a-symmetrically knotted pile. Dyes utilized are vegetal with a dark red dominating both field and the multiple borders that is accented with an off white. The design is Ersari with a variant of the Aranji expressed in the main guls of the field. Appraised Value $1,295.00.
Shar Babak Iran

Rug # 16, 20082, 4.5 x 6.7, Hamadon Shahr Babak Iran circa 1970. All hand spun cotton warp and weft support the all hand spun wool a-symmetrical knotted pile. The reddish brown field color is a keynote color of these carpets along with a sparing use of other colors. The three medallions repeat except for the use highlighting colors. A short pile with a soft coarse wool pile that is vegetal dyed supports our identification as a Shahr Babak. Appraised Value $950.00.

Chemical dyes provide a rich red field and accenting color pallet. This design is a common one and heralds back to the days of the Mogul dynasty. Appraised Value $934.00.

Markarian Silk 300L

Rug # 122, AT1330 1.7 x 1.9 Markarian 300 Line Chinese Silk. Hand woven in china in the 300 Line quality “very fine” which renders about 600 knot per square inch. The Markarian name is associated with the oldest know prayer rug (the design of this rug) of it’s type known a Dagistan. Dyes employed are chemical and it must be said that the Chinese know silk and are masters of all aspects with this medium. Appraised Value $1,450.00.

The warp and weft foundation is cotton with a hand spun Nepalese highland sheep’s wool pile hand spun and knotted with the rod technique which produces a corn row effect across from side to side also know as weft. The dyes employed are chemical and reflect a pastel pallet with a very cheerful geometrical pattern. Appraised Value $1,429.00.
