John Hancock signed Revolutionary War document

Lot # 1001 (Sale Order: 1 of 461)

John Hancock signed Revolutionary War document, addressed to Commissary General Joseph Trumbell at Headquarters Morris Town, inscribed Sir, It is the direction of Congress that you repair with all dispatch to Philadelphia, John Hancock, Pres., to Col. Joseph Trumbell Philad. 20 April 1777, Joseph Trumbell resigned the 2nd of August 1777 after in the spring of 1777 an impatient Congress approved an ill-advised reorganization that split Trumbull's job in two: one commissary general for purchases and another for issues, 8 1/2" x 7". One can speculate that this dispatch was to discuss his roll in supplying the Army with provisions.

Revolutionary War letter, dated 18th, April, 1777

Lot # 1002 (Sale Order: 2 of 461)

Revolutionary War letter, dated 18th, April, 1777, inscribed Dear Friend, I advise you on the 8th to come to this city. Congress today formed a resolution to the same purpose. It is exceedingly critical you ?? be here directly. Gen. Mifflin wishes it as much as I. Y(our) ???? has not been taken up, neither will it before y(our) arrival. The Qm Department & the Commissary's will be settled both immediately upon some footing or of then and the same. You sh(all) see G. M or me the minute you alight. By the way, some are very apprehensive of the wright quarrel between you an Mr. Read (presumably George Read), and a second between you and Genl. Schuyler. I am no judge of such matters. There seems to be a mighty rising fancy for contracts in a scheeming set of politicians here - make y(our) will, and come along. Y(our) obliged affection. J. L., most likely by the hand of James Lovell (1737-1814), Massachusetts delegate to the Continental Congress. A political ally of Quartermaster Gerneral Thomas Mifflin, Lovell corresponded frequently with John and Abigail Adams and Major General Horatio Gates, amongst others, 10 3/4" x 7".
