Biography: Mark Tobey (1890-1976) was born in Centerville, Wisconsin, and moved to Chicago as a young man. There he worked as an illustrator, and attended the Chicago School of the Art Institute. Later he moved to Greenwich Village and took on jobs doing portrait painting, and lamp and screen decoration. Through his various experience he came to a style which he termed "white writing." This soon caught the attention of the art world during the rise of Abstract Expressionism. He joined the Baha'i World Faith, and later studied Zen Buddhism, and both these formed a philosophical basis for all his work to follow. He moved to Seattle, and studied Oriental calligraphy. A trip to the Far East, with time spent in a Zen Buddhist monastery, gave him a renewed view of art. His travels and experience led him to the realization of his artistic journey- to build a bridge between Eastern and Western visual expression. He spent the remainder of his life working in Switzerland. His art is widely praised around the world for its influence on and eventual break from the New York Abstract Expressionist movement. This is a sculpture of a woman from the 1920's, done in an elgongated form, with unfinished surface. She wears a hat and carries a book. The color is light clay, and it appears to made out of some type of clay material, probably with a metal frame. This sculpture was made by Austin Products in 1974, and it is named and dated on the base. It stands 25 inches tall, and the base is 6 x 6 1/2 inches. It is in excellent condition overall. Shown here is a unique piece of artwork created by renowned American artist, Ken Keeley. This work, entitled: "20th Century Newsstand" is a mixed media piece utilizing various collage elements to form an almost 3D effect. In this work, Keeley has juxtaposed various figures of 20th century pop culture and placed them within a newsstand setting. This is the first piece of artwork done in this particular style by Keeley that we have seen. Many pop culture icons are represented here including New Yorker and Rolling Stone magazines, Marlon Brando, Elvis, Marilyn Monroe, Michael Jordan, Mickey Mouse, Charlie Chaplin, JFK, Winston Churchill, a Hershey's candy bar wrapper, and much, much more! Keeley's process: The figures have been culled from various newspaper headlines and magazine covers and were then painstakingly reproduced in a smaller format by Keeley. Keeley then took the individual reproductions and collaged the pieces into the setting by floating them with clips and other devices. The result is an overlap effect, which gives the piece an overall feeling of reality. This piece has been framed and measures 34.5 inches x 50 inches overall. Guillaume Azoulay (Morocco, b. 1949) is a self taught artist who began selling his artwork by the age of thirteen. His style developed into one of impeccable detail and fluid forms. Biography Dorit Levi (1952- ) was born in Tel Aviv, Israel, a city which became the inspiration for her art. She studied at the prestigious Wizco France art School, where she was a student of Edwin Salomon, Israel's greatest artist. Other artists that influenced her style include Picasso, Leger, and Braque. Their Cubist forms are seen in her work. Also seen is her own distinct style, brimming with warm colors, movement, and a lyricism that conveys a certain joy. Dorit Levi has been a Lecturer at Tel Aviv University, and an Israeli Consul For Cultural Affairs in the USA. Her works can be found in galleries and private collections throughout the world.
