A) Brander Flintlock Pistol

This lot consists of two nearly identical Brander London marked flintlock pistols. 13 1/2 inch overall length. The hammer, upper tang, trigger, screws, frizzen and frizzen spring are iron, with the remaining components brass (this includes the barrel and lock plate). The border engraved brass lock plate is marked "BRANDER" under the flash pan. The top barrel flat is marked "LONDON", with three proofs on the upper left flat. The trigger guard is engraved with a flower blossom. Chiseled thumb shield and side plate, with a grotesque face on the buttcap and ornate ramrod pipes. Full length stock with a carved pattern around the upper tang.

Condition: Fine. The brass has an attractive aged patina. The iron components have a mottled gray patina. The stock is very good with a couple small hairline cracks and a small missing chip near the lock and a minor crack on the forearm (left side near) and near the side plate, along with numerous minor dings and scratches.

Pair of Finely Chiseled Engraved Flintlock Pistols
A) Firenze Marked Flintlock Pistol

The lock plate is finely engraved with an image of a warrior/mythological figure next to "Firenze" (Italian for the Italian capital city of Florence) in front of the hammer and a flying insect above a watchful sitting dog behind the hammer. The hammer has a scroll engraving with a floral blossom engraved on the hammer screw. The frizzen is engraved and the frizzen spring is artfully shaped along the edge. The part round rifled barrel has a hexadecagon section that screws on to a octagon breech plug and is shaped at the muzzle. The top flat of the breech is marked with a crown over a monogram. The upper tang is engraved and marked with the number "1". The ornate scroll shaped side plate is accented with a punch dot engraving. The lion head grip cap features an engraved image of woman on the left side with the backside of a man on the reverse. The trigger guard has chiseling with a punch dot background. The nicely figured hardwood stock also has a very ornate thumb shield. The side plate, thumb shield, and buttcap are silver.

Condition: Fine. The barrel and action have been cleaned with minor pitting contained to the barrel and breech plug. The silver parts have been polished. The stock is very good with a couple filled repairs near the buttcap, a few hairline cracks and some minor handling marks. Mechanically fine.

Engraved Brass Scottish T. Murdoch Flintlock Pistol

Except for part of the trigger, the ram rod, hammer, frizzen and spring, this pistol is all brass construction and 9 1/4 inches overall in length. The pistol was manufactured in 1784 and features scroll and feather design engraving covering about 90% of the pistol. The only visible marking is "T / MURDOCH" below the flash pan and script "JL / 1784" behind the breech. There is a belt hook mounted on the left side of the frame and the trigger is a shaft and ball style. The butt is lobe shaped. Thomas Murdoch (of Leith) worked in this period and a similar example (also dated 1784) is photographed on plate VII, figure 28 of European Hand Firearms by Jackson and Whitelow. It differs in that it is made of steel and is nearly three inches longer, but shares many of the same characteristics as this fine example.

Produced without sights, with the cannon turned, part octagon barrel decorated with scroll and geometric engraving and showing a pair of faint crossed scepter proofs on the left side of the chamber area. The lock plate is marked "JOHN JONES & Co", with light engraving, a ball-tipped trigger, and a visible half cock notch. The full steel stock is engraved similar to the barrel, with the addition of floral and spiral patterns and a blank oval panel on either side of the wrist, an engraved steel ramrod, belt hook and a flared butt with ram-horn curls and a floral engraved nipple clearing pin.

Rare Matched Pair of Finely Engraved Scottish All Metal Flintlock Highland Belt Pistols
A) Wallace Marked Engraved Scottish Metal Flintlock Pistol

Estimate: $8500 - $13000
Manufactured circa 1820 and constructed in the traditional Scottish fashion, these fine Scottish flintlock pistols are high quality made with tight metal fit and engraving covering most of the surfaces. The pistols feature a 6 inch barrel with a decorative octagon muzzle, round in the center and fluted at the breech end. The barrel is engraved with floral and patriotic motifs. The right side of the frame is engraved "WALLACE & Co / EDINBURGH". The forearm and hammer are engraved with a feather design, the upper sides of the forearm, left side of the frame, bottom and top of the frame and the sides of the grip area are engraved with a floral scroll design. The pistols are equipped with a Late type Scottish flintlock mechanism with fully waterproof powder pans and sliding hammer safety. There is a twisted belt hook mounted on the left side of the frame, the grip has a rams horn butt, turned steel ramrod with a button head, thistle head vent picks and the trigger is a silver plated ball type. The overall length is about 10". Made from one of the last Scottish Gunsmiths who worked in the traditional flintlock manner.

Condition: Very fine. The pistol has a smooth mottled silver gray patina. Engraving is crisp and even. The trigger retains 60% of the original silver plating. The engraving retains crisp and clear. The action is tight as new. A very nice example of a very high quality, well made Scottish flintlock pistol.

Marked "THOS TYRER" on the lock, with floral scroll engraving on the lock, hammer and barrel extension, and faint floral engraving and a silver inlaid band on the breech plug. There is both a Thomas Tyrer, Sr. and Jr. listed as gunsmiths in Richmond, Virginia circa 1850 to as late as 1804 when Jr. died. (reference page 311 of American Gunsmiths by Frank M. Sellers. Damascus barrel marked "THO TYRER RICHMOND" on the top flat, small brass bead front and fix iron rear sights, sliding hammer safety on the mounted on the lock, wooden ramrod with brass ends, solid under barrel rib and mounted with a checkered half-stock with silver forend cap, thumb oval and wedge escutcheons and iron buttcap with sun burst engraved design.

Condition: Very good. The barrel shows half of the faded tiger strip Damascus pattern visible with some minor pitting. The remaining metal surfaces have a smooth mottled gray patina. The wedge escutcheons have an aged patina while the forend cap remains relatively bright. The stock has been varnished and the checkering recut, and it remains very good with a few minor dents and dings. The barrel marking is beginning to fade, otherwise the markings and engraving, unless noted above, are clear. Mechanically excellent.

the firm of Brander & Potts was active in the early 19th Century, with Mr. Brander being called upon to testify in the high treason trial of James Watson following the events of the Spa fields Riot, where an anti-monarchy mob sacked several gunsmiths in the Minories area before an abortive attack on the Tower of London. Dovetailed silver blade front and notch rear sights, with engraving of arms and shields on the tang, "70/ MINORIES/ LONDON" on the breech, and a fine twist steel pattern on the barrel. The lock plate is lightly floral engraved, with geometric designs on the hammer, a roller equipped frizzen spring, high fence, and "BRANDER/ & POTTS" below the flash pan. Checkered stock, with a brass tipped ramrod, silver forearm tip, engraved finger rest trigger guard, silver inscription plate on the wrist and a round butt.

Mechanically excellent.

This pair of silver mounted Queen Anne style Flintlock pistols were made by Israel Segalas in the early 1700s. Segalas was French Huguenot who immigrated to England circa 1685-1690 and is listed as early as 1702 as a gun maker. These pistols feature three stepped, removable barrels with a cannon muzzle with a band of floral scroll and beads at the breech end steps. 11 3/4 inches overall in length. The barrel tang is engraved with floral scroll and has a floral extension over the breech. Below the flash pan is marked ""SEGALAS - LONDINI" and the frame has a scallop border. Iron trigger guard with decorative finial. The grip is adorned with decorative silver foliate left side plate with a serpent head terminal, a grotesque silver buttplate and decorative silver thumb shield.

Condition: Very good. The metal surfaces have a smooth dark mottled gray patina. The silver has an aged patina. The lower tang does not fit snugly to the grip, however everything looks original. This is an example of a brass barreled flintlock box lock style blunderbuss pistol that was manufactured circa 1780-1800, (origin probably English). The barrel and frame are one piece and the 60 bore barrel flared cannon muzzle opening measures 7/8". The iron spring loaded bayonet is mounted on the underside of the muzzle and secured in the front of the trigger guard and two ramrod pipes are mounted on the right side of the barrel, securing a wooden ramrod. The bayonet blade measures 4 3/4". The sides of the box lock action are engraved with a patriotic motif. Fitted with a smooth bag shaped one piece walnut grip with decorative silver wire inlays. Complete in a modified old wooden case with replaced green felt lining with five compartment, one with a wooden lid. The case contains a powder flask, iron bullet mold, wooden handled screwdriver, patches and about 30 round lead bullets.

Condition: Very good. The brass has an attractive aged patina. There are a few moderate dings on the barrel. The trigger guard, frizzen and bayonet have a gray patina with overall moderate pitting. The grip is also very good with almost all of the wire inlay remaining and scattered minor dings and dents. The engraving remains crisp. The action is excellent. The case is good as revarnished some time ago with a minor crack on the lid and bottom, and overall minor dings and scratches. The lining is good with some minor wear and stains. The accessories are all very good.

William Brander was active in London circa 1752-1789, with later references showing his descendants keeping up the trade. Produced without sights on the cannon barrel, with "BRANDER/ LONDON" in banners among scrollwork on top of the breech and "crown/ GP". "*/ WB" and "crown/ V" proofs on the left underside. Vine and floral engraving are present on the tang and the trigger guard, the hammer has a fine goose neck pattern, and the frizzen spring is expertly turned to run along the underside of the flash pan. Smooth one piece grip, with a horn tipped wood ramrod, elegant silver wire scroll and flag inlay around the tang, a pierced-through panel showing an array of arms and flags opposite the lock, an inscription shield with faint monogram on the wrist, and a raised array of arms on the buttcap.

The bottom of the trigger guard is engraved with a floral design, the barrel tang has a leaf design and the walnut grip is adorned with a silver inlaid array of flags and arms on the left side, a decorative patriotic motif silver thumb plate inscribed "W / Haggatt / Esqr" and silver grotesque face for a buttcap. Behind the barrel tang, the grip is carved with a shell design.

John Tarles was active in London circa 1662 - 1670. Produced without sights, with "J. TARLES" and scroll engraving on top of the barrel and a set of London "GP" and "V" proofs on the left side. The lock plate and hammer are both scroll engraved, with a design of a fire breathing dog on the lock over "TARLES" and a swiveling safety latch behind the hammer. Smooth straight grip stock, with a wooden ramrod, raised carving around the lock, iron inscription plate on the backstrap, engraved trigger guard and scroll engraved buttplate. English walnut.

English Proofed Holster Flintlock Pistol

Very faint, illegible makers barrel address is present on top flat of barrel. Brass blade front sight set into a triangular panel, a faint inscription on the top flat and a pair of "crown/ V" proofs on the breech and tang. Light engraving is present on the hammer and frizzen spring, and the lock plate has deeply engraved scenes, with a bugler behind the hammer and a man next to a stand of flags ahead. The reverse plate is gilt brass, with a deep scene of two soldiers on horseback charging each other, while a third horseman watches on, a pair of men sit next to a pillar among an array of arms, and some tents and a small town are visible in the background. On the wrist is a brass panel, shaped like an inscription plate with a raised bust of a lady in the center, fancy borders and a crown on top. Smooth full length stock, with horn ramrod and forearm tips, raised carved scroll designs on the underside and around the tang, raised martial engraving on the trigger guard and a brass buttcap with martial themes and grotesque faces.

Engraved Ornate Italian Flintlock Holster Pistol with Relief Carved Stock

This large holster style flintlock pistol is marked "LAZARINO COMINAZZO" on top of the barrel at the breech end. The barrel is stepped and at the breech end (4 1/2") the sides are flat and the upper portion is grooved. The grooves extend onto the barrel tang. The barrel is fitted with a decorative brass front sight and there is no rear sight. The lock is nicely engraved with a crescent moon face behind the spring and hammer, with an arrangement of cannons and drums and scallop border. The brass mountings are decorated with deep relief engraving. The left side plate has a wooded hunting scene of a hunter and dog chasing a deer, the trigger guard with floral scroll designs on the buttcap with the bust of an ancient soldier on each side and scroll designs and the thumb plate with a crown and scroll designs. The full stock features a horn forend and carved floral scroll designs on the forearm area and around the barrel tang. Complete with a wooden ramrod with an ivory tip secured by two octagon brass pipes. There is a number "4" branded on right side of wrist rear of lock plate. Origin is unknown, but is well executed and definitely old.

Produced without sights, with light engraving near the middle bands, gold filled floral and anchor themed stamps on the breech, and a gold proof stamp "crown/ VAX/ ARI/ AS" on the rear of the top flat. Vaxarias was a gunsmith from Ripoll, a major firearms producer for Spain which suffered a number of French invasions as well virtual destruction during the First Carlist War of 1833-1839. Miquelet style lock, with an externally visible half-cock notch and sear, engraved accent plates on the hammer and flash pan, engraved external hammer spring and frizzen, and a detachable flash pan. Full length stock, with raised carved scrollwork, brass tipped ramrod with engraved brass pipes, martial engravings on the trigger guard, fancy inscription plate on the wrist topped with a crown, brass reverse plate with a bust set amongst flags and cannons, "B1064" painted on the underside of the wrist and a brass buttcap with engraved arrays of arms set around a raised grotesque screaming face.

This high quality Flintlock pistol has a lock plate marked "A. BINI" in front of the hammer. Smooth bore barrel manufactured without out sights with the octagon section of the barrel having a large silver inlaid monogram. The burled walnut stock is decorated with an elaborate and extensive silver wire inlay motif which surrounds the incised mother of pearl thumb shield and incorporates three silver engraved floral blossoms (two on the left stock flat, one behind the upper tang, with each having its own distinctive design). The thumb shield is carved with a "farmhouse" scene. The lock plate screws have floral blossom engraved escutcheons. The stock is flared at the butt and is fitted with an iron buttcap and a horn forend tip. Complete with a horn tipped wooden ramrod.

The full length stock is decorated with a fine silver wire inlay (mostly around the upper tang and in the grip area) and has a thumb shield. Complete with a wooden ramrod with iron tip.

Mechanically fine.

Produced without sights on the cannon profile removable, rifled barrel, with the breech section and tang decorated with raised and gold accented scroll designs surrounding a stand of flags on top. The lock plate shows stand of flag, scroll and border engraving, with an engraved hammer and frizzen. Smooth stock, with silver finished furniture, showing a raised carved flame design on the trigger guard finial, inscription panel on the guard, arrays of flags and instruments on the reverse plate, and a buttcap carved into a lion head.
