Bering Sea Eskimo Ivory Pipe with Pipe Tamper 

Lot # 1 (Sale Order: 1 of 578)      

Golden patina; incised using black and red ink to depict seals, wolves, walrus, dogfish, caribou; hatched designs and concentric circles decorate body of pipe; separate carved bowl with hinged lid; tamper carved in the form of a seal, length 18 in.
late 19th century 

Condition: One portion of tamper holder broken; hinge on bowl missing original tie or peg, small part of hinge broken - but still works; tight, old stress cracks at tamper supports - on one side.

Nootka Carved Stool 

Lot # 19 (Sale Order: 19 of 578)      

Carved with a Thunderbird on seat; sides with other animal figures; legs fully carved; figures with abalone inset eyes; old typed label pasted to underside of stool, The Thunderbird Wishing Seat, As used by the Nootka Indians of British Columbia... All of the Indian tribes of Alaska and British Columbia are skilled wood carvers and their villages are all adorned with massive carved wood totem poles in commemoration of their tribal history... In addition that Indian chief of each tribe had in his lodge elaborate late car would just seats and settees and invariably a wishing seat his seat was elaborately carved with the various animals such as the Thunderbird, whale, frog, bear etc.… All of which control the life and destiny of the Indians in special honored guests of the chief were invited to sit on the wishing seat and make one wish to be granted within the year, as it was presumed that the spirits of the various animals in totemic figures (as carved on the seat) would grant their request.; height 22 in. x width 20 in.

Pole illustrates a flood myth where when the flood came, the raven flew to heaven with children in his arms, saving them from demise. Pole accompanied by a Nugget Shop postcard.
