French Pull Toy "Walking the Dogs"with Superb Bisque Gentleman 3000/3700

14"(36 cm.) overall. 11"man. 12”l. Standing upon a wooden platform with spoke wheels and simple mechanical arrangement hidden below, is a bisque head man with brown sculpted hair and beard, painted brown outlined eyes, accented nostrils, painted lashes and brows, closed mouth with center accent line, block torso, wire upper arms and legs, wooden lower limbs, painted boots, original costume of silk faille and velvet. The man is attached to the base by a metal rod and holds the leashes to two paper mache hunting dogs which are also posed on metal rods. When the toy is pulled along, the man nods his head up and down as though calling the dogs, tugs at their leashes, and the dogs jump up and down in an eager manner. Condition: generally excellent. Comments: French, circa 1870, the maker remains unknown of this series of uniquely made mechanical pull toys, this example being a very early example. Value Points: outstanding sculpting and rarity of the model of the gentleman enhance the mechanical toy which is, in itself, also very rare....more

The wooden framed room is centered by a charming set-back sun room having especially high wainscoting, carved archway entrance and diamond-patterned carving of sun window panes. Waist-high wainscoting continues around the larger room, below original paper walls, and there is a large carved faux-door, original papered floor, and original fluted room frame. The room is furnished with a highly carved dining set that is original to the room, as well as a carpet, Christmas tree in the sun room, a large collection of antique pewter steins and dishes, and other accessories including moose head, prints, cross-bow, other hunting miniatures, and three stoneware jugs, one with a raised figural design of Kaiser Wilhelm. Seated upon a wooden steamer trunk with striped canvas cover, wooden slats, bail handles, is a bisque head girl with brown glass flirty eyes, mohair lashes, painted lashes and brows, open mouth, four porcelain teeth, dimpled chin, pierced ears, brunette mohair wig, carton torso, hinged paper mache lower legs and arms. The girl is wearing her superb original dress with lavish embroidered lace, wonderful undergarments with lace and silk ribbon trim, stockings, silk shoes, and woven bonnet with lace lining. She holds a miniature Parisian newspaper in one hand, and a pocket watch in the other. When wound, she turns and nods her head, her eyes "flirt"and she lifts her right hand to check the time, while impatiently tapping her feet as she waits for the train which seems to be delayed. Condition: generally excellent, mechanism and music function well. Marks: SH 1039 6 1.2 dep Germany. Comments: attributed to Roullet & Decamps based upon the their signature winding key, circa 1900.
