18" (46 cm.) French bisque automaton "Spanish Dancer" with Tambourine 3500/6500

Lot # 22 (Sale Order: 22 of 251)      

Standing upon a circular velvet-covered base is a bisque-head lady with blue paperweight eyes, painted features, closed mouth, original brunette wig, carton torso and legs with slender adult lady shape, bisque forearms. She is wearing a (frail) original silk, lace and velvet costume of Spanish dancer trimmed with gold coins, coral earrings, and is holding a tambourine with brass bells. When wound, she moves her head from side to side, shakes the tambourine with her right hand, and lifts the string of bells with her left hand, while music plays. The head has Jumeau stamps, and the original tune paper on the base lists two tunes, "Espagnol ..." and "Corneville Valse". Excellent with original frail costume, two finger tips (hidden behind tambourine) chipped, music and mechanism function. Circa 1890, an especially beautiful model....more
