CSA VIRGINIA DIARy SOLOMON & NICHOLAS

Lot # 21 (Sale Order: 21 of 443)

CSA Virginia Small Diary, written in 1864 from May-Dec. Owners & writers were Solomon & Alexander Nicholas, Father was Francis, & Mother was Catherine . Spouse was Jane & children lived in Crabbottom, Highland, Virginia. After was was a farmer. George A. Nicholas, his son, & possibly others wrote in this small Diary, which carries notes from his family through the 1880s. The diary is bound in red leather and carries a hand stitched spine, giving it a great folk art feel. This is the first entry written by Solomon, as he served with the CSA and was detained at various Prison Camps, then finally at the Union POW Hub of Camp Chase: "I was arrested on the 26th of May at home brought to Camp Barton the same night. 29th marched to Hutchinsonville, arrived in Beverly on the 30th at 12 oclock. remained in Beverly until Monday morning the 6th of June. Left same in evening for Wheeling marched 20 miles and camped at one. Thompson' Tuesday 7th marched to Grafton. here got supplies and rest awhile and then took the cares(cars) for Wheeling. landed in wheeling morning of the 8th day....remained in Wheeling until morning of the 13 then left for CAMP CHASE(Ohio) 12 oclock the same day. On Sept. 9th was released & started for home reached home on the 19th, etc." The next section is believed written by his brother or Uncle, detailing the sad demise of this ex Confederate POW while he was quietly farming near his home: "Solomon Nicholas died March 19th 1868 aged 45 years one month and 21 days, while plowing in his field he was SHOT and CRUELLY MURDERED by one Nathaniel Atchinson of Harrison County & DIED BEFORE his wife & children could reach him. He was an amiable and inoffensive man." The diary is 33 pages long, with about 18-20 pages written on. It is small and fits in the palm of your hand, and shows considerable pocket wear, although retains its binding well. ...more

VERY RARE TALLASSEE PERCUSSION CARBINE

Lot # 22 (Sale Order: 22 of 443)

Tallassee Enfield Pattern Carbine, a.k.a “New Model Carbine.” Made by the Confederate Armory at Tallassee Alabama, c. 1864. Total quantity estimated about 500. 58 caliber percussion muzzleloader, patterned closely after the British Enfield carbine 25” barrel fastened by two barrel bands. All brass mountings with iron ramrod and swivels; iron sling swivels on forward band and bottom of stock near butt. Full walnut stock. Lockplate marked forward of hammer: C.S./Tallassee/ALA. Dated at rear of lock 1864. Apparently the only officially adopted Confederate Cavalry weapon. Made with machinery moved (for safety against threatened capture) from the former Robinson/Confederate government factory producing Sharps type carbines at Richmond. Production commenced late in the war and it is believed that completion of approximately 500 pieces in the spring of 1865 was too late for issuance. Very rare; extreme caution advised.
