Japanese 16th Century Tachi Converted to a Katana Samurai Sword

Lot # 15 (Sale Order: 16 of 91)

We're told this is either a 16th-17th century Tachi that was subsequently cut down to a long Katana around 1750-1800. 31" blade (41" overall) is in very good polish, with two holes in the tang and no signature (probably removed when it was reworked). Temper line is very thin with three flaws from re-tempering and repeated polishing. Comes in an unusual scabbard identified from the Sasume region, grip is missing the wrap (lost by consignors kids after it was brought back as a war souvenir. A much better than average very early heirloom sword.

Imperial Japanese Military Showa Smith-Made Samurai Sword

Lot # 16 (Sale Order: 17 of 91)

An exceptional hand-forged 28" long sword produced circa 1930-1935 by Masafusa. Masafusa was a famous swordsmith who in 1941 placed third in the National Sword Competition. His swords bring 1,000,000 Yen in Japan. It is signed by the smith and the polisher, and has two "hot-stamps" signifying high-quality rust-resistant steel. It has the most active and beautiful temper line any of our experts have seen, and though there are some scratches and two small nicks, the polish is in good condition. It was taken off a dead Japanese 2nd Lieutenant after the battle of Zig-Zag Pass in the Philippines during 1945. Hard to find a better example.
