A RARE PRESENTATION TULWAR SWORD

"A massive example, the iron hilt finely inlaid in elaborate silver flowering vinework overall. The broad blade forged of pattern-welded damascus steel , with narrow fuller at the spine and expanded tip, chiseled at the right forte with Surya, the Hindu God of the Sun, and inscribed, THE RAJAH SAHEB DHARAMPUR. Beginning of the 19th century. Light wear. Presented by the Raja of Dharampur, the English inscription indicates the recipient was British, probably a high-ranking officer present on the occasion of the elevation of Dharampur to a British Protectorate on December 31, 1802. Surya the Sun God was the device of the ruling family, who were members of the Rajput Sisodia Dynasty. Surya remains the Dharampur state emblem and is depicted on its flag. A RARE SCOTTISH DIRK

"The hardwood hilt with high shoulders characteristic of the period, finely carved in Celtic interlace motifs and set with silver studs, the disk pommel mounted in silver with roped border and bead finial, the flared silver ferrule with engraved borders. The massive single-edged blade with substantial back fuller to either side and long false edge, etched with flowers and a crown surmounting a thistle, with substantial remains of bluing and gilding in the fullers. In its original black leather scabbard with four silver mounts engraved en suite with those of the hilt, the chape further engraved with a thistle. Third quarter of the 18th century. Light wear, areas of pitting to blade, implements lacking. Examples of this period are very seldom encountered. See James D. Forman, The Scottish Dirk, 1993, Bloomfield: MRS, p. 21, for precisely similar. Overall length 50.2 cm....more
