New Haven Arms Co., Volcanic Lever Action Carbine

Lot # 1 (Sale Order: 1 of 960)

New Haven Arms Co., Volcanic Lever Action Carbine

This Volcanic carbine was manufactured by the New Haven Arms Co. circa 1860 and has a polished brass ("gunmetal") receiver and crescent buttplate. Most Volcanic carbines featured factory scroll engraving and examples like this one with a plain finish are rare. The carbine has a 16 inch blued octagon barrel and integral magazine with casehardened hammer, trigger and loading lever. The straight grain walnut stock has an oil finish. The barrel has a nickel-silver cone front sight blade. A wheel-adjustable rear sight was originally mounted in a dovetail on the receiver; the original rear sight on this rifle has been replaced with a period fixed aperture rear sight. The top of the barrel is roll-stamped: "PATENT" and "FEB 14, 1854". This modified legend was introduced in April 1857 after Oliver Winchester took control of the Volcanic Repeating Arms Co. and reorganized it as the New Haven Arms Co. The serial number, "2236", is stamped right side of the loading lever. The New Haven Arms Co. manufactured an estimated total of 1,000 Volcanic carbines between 1857 and 1860. The revolutionary Volcanic carbines featured self-cocking lever actions, integral spring-loaded magazines and were chambered for a cartridge with self-contained propellant and primer. Although the Volcanic carbines were not a commercial success, the development of reliable cartridges allowed the Volcanic lever action and integral magazine to serve as the basis for the successful Henry rifle and the Winchester Model 1866 and 1873 rifles. The investment of shirt manufacturer Oliver Winchester in the Volcanic Repeating Arms Co. eventually resulted in the establishment of the New Haven Arms Co. and the Winchester Repeating Arms Co.

Class: Antique

Very good as repaired (barrel extension welded, filed and refinished). The brass receiver and buttplate have aged to very attractive patina. The side plate joints are tight, and the receiver has minimum handling wear. The blue finish on the barrel has aged to an even, deep brown patina. The barrel edges are sharp. Handling wear is minimal, and the New Haven Arms Co. legend is crisp. The casehardened hammer, lever and trigger have a smooth brown patina. The hand fitted tang and buttplate screws are in good condition. The adjustable rear sight is missing, and the period replacement rear sight has been removed from the receiver dovetail but accompanies the carbine. The straight grain walnut stock remains is good-very good condition. The stock has numerous light dents and scratches but retains most of the original finish. This is a representative example of a New Haven Arms Co., Volcanic carbine with scarce plain receiver, buttplate and 16-inch barrel.

Scarce and Desirable Jennings Breech Loading Single Shot Rifle

Lot # 2 (Sale Order: 2 of 960)

Scarce and Desirable Jennings Breech Loading Single Shot Rifle

Only a small number of the Jennings rifles were manufactured by Robbins and Lawrence in 1848-1852. The Jennings rifles mark the important second step in the evolution of what eventually became the Volcanic, Henry, and Winchester lever actions. Work on the Jennings rifles at Robbins and Lawrence is credited with bringing together B. Tyler Henry, Horace Smith, and Daniel Wesson under the same roof and thus helped lead to both what became the highly successful Winchester lever action series and the iconic Smith & Wesson partnership. This example is the single shot variant produced circa 1850-1851 using Jennings repeater components adapted for single shot use. The magazine tube used on the repeaters was adapted to hold the cleaning rod. A small rectangular loading gate allows loading of single "Rocket Ball" cartridges. The ring trigger pushes the breechblock into place and operates the automatic pill primer. Beginning in 1852, Robbins and Lawrence abandoned the underpowered rocket ball cartridge in favor of building muzzle loading variants. Many of the original breech loaders were altered by outside gunsmiths into muzzle loaders as well and consequently many of the already scarce single shots are no longer found in original form. This example escaped conversion. It is marked "PATENT 1849/C.P. DIXON AGENT/NEW YORK" on the left side of the action. "WJ" is stamped behind the trigger guard. It features post and notch sights and is fitted with a straight wrist walnut stock with German silver inscription plate on the right and a sporting buttplate. A sling swivel is fitted in front of the trigger guard, and a stud for a second swivel is on the barrel band.

Class: Antique

Good as partially refinished (wood). The rifle retains a mixture of the faded original brown finish and a well established brown patina with some patches of oxidation and pitting and scattered minor scratches. The otherwise good wood is revarnished with a several minor repaired cracks. The action is fine. The area around the markings on the left has been cleaned, and the markings are crisp.

Western Frontier Winchester Model 1873 Lever Action Rifle Attributed to Wild West Showman Buffalo Bi

Lot # 3 (Sale Order: 3 of 960)

Western Frontier Winchester Model 1873 Lever Action Rifle Attributed to Wild West Showman Buffalo Bill with Inscribed Presentation Wild West Show Cane

The accompanying factory letter confirms rifle type, round barrel and plain trigger. The rifle was received in warehouse on March 21, 1881 and shipped on July 16, 1881. This Winchester Model 1873 lever action rifle features the dust cover guide rail secured on the top of the receiver with two screws and dust cover with rear serrations. Front blade sight base only and elevation adjustable rear sight with a barrel stamped with the two line address/patent dates marking on the top. The upper tang is stamped "MODEL 1873." Full length magazine, smooth forearm and straight grip stock with crescent buttplate with compartment (cleaning rod not included). Attached to the lever are two metal tags. The first tag is marked "B31/68394/1881/1873WIM." The second tag is marked "B31/68394" (numbers that match the numbers on the first tag) above "COL. W.F. CODY/HUNG IN SALOON/IRMA MOTEL." The Irma Hotel Saloon is located in downtown Cody, Wyoming; the city that Wild West showman Col. William "Buffalo Bill" Cody helped found in 1895. In 1902, Cody built the Irma Hotel, which today still offers lodging to travelers. According to the hotel's website, "You can even stay in Buffalo Bill's private suite." Cody named the hotel for his daughter. Buffalo Bill was born William Fredrick Cody in 1846, not more than 30 miles from Rock Island Auction Company near the small river town of LeClaire' Iowa in Scott County, right on the Mississippi River. In 1863, he joined the Union Army and served with the 7th Kansas Volunteer Cavalry Regiment throughout the Civil War. In 1868 he again joined the U.S. Army as an civilian scout and guide with the 5th Calvary. In 1872 he was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor for valor during the Indian Wars. In late 1872, Cody went to Chicago to make his stage debut in The Scouts of the Prairie, one of Ned Buntline’s original Wild West shows (Buntline was also the author of the Buffalo Bill novels). In 1883, Cody founded his own show "Buffalo Bill's Wild West", a circus-like extravaganza that toured widely for three decades in the United States and later throughout Europe. Besides Buffalo Bill himself, the Wild West show starred sharpshooter Annie Oakley, Chief Sitting Bull, real wild west cowboys and range hands as extras and stand-ins. Accompanying the rifle is a Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show presentation cane. The cane has a hardwood shaft and a silver plated, inscribed handle. The inscription reads, "WALLACE R. STEMSEN/Buffalo Bills/WILD WEST/1891&2. Overall length: 33 1/2 inches.

Class: Antique

Fair. The rifle has a mottled gray patina overall with dark patina in the protected areas. There are extensive file marks visible on the right side plate and some scattered minor pitting. The lightly sanded, reoiled wood is fair with a repaired forearm and wrist and some minor handling marks. Mechanically needs work as the lever does remain flush with the lower tang. The cane is good with the handle repaired.

Winchester Model 1876 Express Rifle with Full Nickel-Plated Finish and Deluxe Style Stock with Madis Letter

Winchester Model 1876 rifle chambered for the .50-95 Winchester Express cartridge manufactured in 1878. The rifle has the Second Model receiver with screw-fastened dust cover rail and dust cover with oval, "thumb-print" finger guide. The rifle has a special order full nickel plated finish and "XX" deluxe, fancy grain stock and forearm with checkered panels. The barrel has a standard nickel plated sporting style front sight and blued sporting style rear sight. The crescent butt plate has a sliding brass trap. The butt trap contains a four-piece jointed steel cleaning rod. The top of the barrel is roll-stamped with the two-line legend: "WINCHESTER'S-REPEATING ARMS. NEW HAVEN. CT./KING'S-IMPROVEMENT-PATENTED-MARCH 29.1866. OCTOBER 16. 1860." ahead of the rear sight. "50 CAL. EXPRESS" is hand-engraved on the top of the barrel between the rear sight and the receiver. The top of the dust cover is hand-engraved: "WINCHESTER EXPRESS/.50 CAL. 95 GRS." in two lines. The upper receiver tang is roll-stamped: "MODEL. 1876." in fancy letters. The serial number "7746" is located on the lower tang behind the lever latch. The rifle is complete with two hand-written letters from the late author and Winchester expert George Madis. The letters give a detailed analysis of the rifle and state: "I have carefully examined this fine rifle, inside and out, and have determined it is original and correct as made by Winchester". The letters also state that records from the Cody Firearms Museum list this rifle as "Rifle, Express, Octagon barrel and a plain trigger" and indicate that it was shipped from the Winchester factory on May 13, 1879. The letter further states that the hand engraved markings on the barrel and dust cover are correct for early production Model 1876 Express rifles. The Madis letter also states that examination of the rifle indicates that it may have been used in cartridge development at Winchester before being nickel plated and stocked with "XX" walnut for a special order. The combination of a 50-95 Express chambering, nickel plated finish and checkered, fancy grain stock and forearm is rare.

Class: Antique

Very fine as partially refinished (wood) and upgraded possibly by factory to deluxe configuration. The rifle retains at least 90% of the period, possibly factory nickel plated finish. Finish wear is confined to some flaking on the lower forward edge of the receiver at the junction with the stock. The sides of the receiver, side plates and edges of the barrel show the first traces of potential flaking. The hand engraved and roll-stamped markings on the barrel, dust cover and receiver tang are crisp. The stock and forearm have been professionally refinished to new condition and have a beautiful semi-gloss finish. The checkering is extremely sharp. Whatever the explanation, this is still a true 50 Express Winchester Model 1876 Lever Action Rifle that would adorn any collection!

Exceptional Factory Engraved New Haven Arms Company Volcanic Lever Action No.1 Pocket Pistol

Lot # 10 (Sale Order: 10 of 960)

Exceptional Factory Engraved New Haven Arms Company Volcanic Lever Action No.1 Pocket Pistol

This pistol was manufactured by the New Haven Arms Co. circa 1860, and has an integral six-shot magazine, brass "gunmetal" frame with flat bottom grip and loading lever with round finger hole. The barrel has an iron front sight with short, flat blade. A simple notched rear sight is mounted in a dovetail on the frame. The barrel has a high polish blue finish. The hammer, trigger and lever are color casehardened, and the sights, cartridge elevator, bolt and trigger spring are niter blue. The two-piece walnut grips have a varnished piano finish. The top of the barrel is roll-stamped: "NEW HAVEN CONN./PATENT FEB. 14 1854". This marking, which eliminates the "Volcanic" marking used by the Volcanic Repeating Arms Co., was adopted after Oliver Winchester reorganized the company as New Haven Arms in April 1857. The serial number "1445" is visible on the left side of the frame beneath the grip and is stamped on the inside of both grips. The side plates, top and sides of the frame and back strap are decorated with the open scrollwork utilized by the New Haven Arms Co. on most No.1 Pocket pistols. Volcanic pistols and carbines are scarce and historically significant. Oliver Winchester's association with Volcanic firearms eventually led to the establishment of the Winchester Repeating Arms Co., and the revolutionary Volcanic design combined with self-primed and self-contained cartridges marked the introduction of practical repeating magazine firearms.

Class: Antique

Very fine. The pistol is all original and retains 70% plus of the bright original high polish blue finish on the barrel. 90% of the original case colors are present on the hammer, lever and trigger. Significant amounts of fire blue finish are present on the front and rear sights, bolt and cartridge elevator. The frame and side-plates have an excellent, un-touched patina and are free from scratches and handling marks. The side-plate joints are perfect. The factory scroll engraving is extremely crisp. The walnut grips are in excellent condition and retain 95% of the original piano finish. Wear is limited to some minor scuff marks and finish loss at the lower edges of the grips. This is an outstanding example of a factory engraved New Haven Arms Co. Volcanic No. 1 Pocket Pistol.

The bolt and loading gate retain significant amounts of the blue finish. The hammer, trigger and lever have most of the soft case colors intact. The brass forearm cap, receiver and buttplate have a very attractive, untouched patina. The deeply cut and flawlessly executed engraving is crisp. The barrel legend is sharp. The highly figured, fancy grain walnut stock and forearm are in very fine condition; nearly all of the high polish pianos finish remains. Wear is limited to a few scattered and very insignificant handling marks. This is a magnificent example of a factory engraved Winchester Model 1866 lever action rifle.

Engraved Special Order Winchester Model 1886 Lever Action 40-70 WCF Rifle

Lot # 14 (Sale Order: 14 of 960)

Engraved Special Order Winchester Model 1886 Lever Action 40-70 WCF Rifle

Winchester Model 1886 Fancy Sporting Rifle manufactured in 1895. The rifle has a special order half-round/half-octagon barrel with half magazine, deluxe fancy grain walnut checkered forearm and straight grip stock with shotgun buttplate. The receiver, upper barrel flat and forearm cap are custom engraved with scrolls and embossed borders, and there is a game scene with a whitetail deer engraved on the left side of the receiver. The custom engraving is well executed and is very similar to Winchester No. 10 factory engraving but is somewhat less detailed. The barrel has a Lyman Winchester Express front sight with white bead and a buckhorn sporting style rear sight with serrated edges and adjustable center piece. The barrel is blued and the forearm cap, receiver, hammer, lever, and buttplate are color casehardened. The stock and forearm have a highly polished piano finish. The top of the barrel has the legend: "-MANUFACTURED BY THE-/-WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS CO. NEW HAVEN. CONN. U.S.A.-" roll-stamped in two lines ahead of the rear sight. The caliber designation: "40-70 W.C.F." is roll-stamped on the top of the barrel between the rear sight and the receiver surrounded by punch-dot and scallop highlights. "-MODEL 1886.-" is roll-stamped on the upper receiver tang. The lower tang is stamped with the 1884 and 1885 patent dates behind the hammer, and the serial number "106876" is stamped behind the tang screw.

Class: Antique

Good as custom engraved. The rifle has an artificial gray brown patina on the barrel, receiver and small parts. Metal surfaces are smooth with some patches of age discoloration on the barrel. The well-executed engraving is sharp. The factory markings are crisp. The highly figured walnut stock and forearm are in very good condition and retain at least 75% of the high polish piano finish. The recut checkering is sharp, and the stock and forearm show only light-moderate handling wear. This is a good looking example of a special order, Winchester Model 1886 Fancy Sporting Rifle with good quality engraving.

Rare Special Order Winchester Model 1876 Lever Action "English Short Rifle" in .50 Express with Brit

Lot # 15 (Sale Order: 15 of 960)

Rare Special Order Winchester Model 1876 Lever Action "English Short Rifle" in .50 Express with British Proof Marks

This English Short Express Rifle Model 1876 is configured similarly to the Model 1886 Light Weight in that it has a short 22 inch barrel (although not tapered), rifle style forearm, short magazine tube, and shotgun butt. A similar example is pictured on page 238 of The Winchester Book by Madis. In the data discussed on page 253 of the above book, Madis notes that only one of each 800 had a shorter than average barrel. This example was manufactured in 1880 and features the second model screw secured guide rail and checkered thumb rest. The dust cover is hand inscribed "WINCHESTER EXPRESS/.50 CAL. 95 GRS." The barrel has the two line address and patent information on top ahead of the rear sight, ".50 CAL" at the breech, and British proofmarks and "Z3499" on the left. The upper tang has the model designation, and the lower tang has the serial number. The brass cartridge elevator is marked "50-95". The rifle has a German silver blade front sight and a two leaf express rear sight with silver sighting lines. The .50-95 Winchester Express was the largest caliber available for the Model 1876 and proved popular with big and dangerous game hunters. Many Model 1876 rifles chambered for this powerful cartridge were shipped to England and then found their way to Africa and India where they were often employed against big cats. Theodore Roosevelt loved his .45-75 '76, but he and other Americans scorned the .50 Express, and thus, the Model 1876 was only produced in limited numbers chambered for that cartridge compared to the smaller calibers.

Class: Antique

About good. The rifle displays a mixture of faded blue finish and brown patina with extensive light oxidation and some spots of pitting. The wood is about good as sanded and re-oiled and has some small nicks and dens and a few light scratches. The action is fine, and the markings are clear.

Lot # 16 (Sale Order: 16 of 960)

Documented Rare and Desirable Winchester Model 1895 Deluxe Lever Action Rifle in the Teddy Roosevelt Caliber .405 WCF with Factory Letter

Manufactured in 1904 and, although there are no visible caliber markings, the rifle chambers the rare and very desirable .405 Winchester cartridge. Theodore Roosevelt had a high regard for his personal Winchester Model 1895s in .405 that he utilized during his African safari. This rifle has a full blue finish with nicely figured checkered walnut stock and forearm. The forearm has an ebony inlay on the tip and the stock is fitted with a solid recoil pad. The underside of the buttstock is stamped with the numbers "5/445." The barrel is fitted with a period retailer applied solid rib, which is equipped with a blade front sight and an express leaf rear sight graduated to 500 yards. The left side of the barrel is marked with the nickel steel marking. The upper tang is marked "WINCHESTER/MODEL 1895", and the serial number is marked on the lower tang. The factory letter indicates the rifle was received in the warehouse on October 10, 1904, and shipped out two days later as art of order number 248097. It was repaired and returned on April 24, 1905, on order number 1226. The letter also confirms the "fancy stock, checkered", rifle configuration, shotgun butt, oil finish, and caliber.

Class: Curio & Relic Long Gun

Very fine as period safari grade sporterized with raised solid matte rib and express leaf sights added. The rifle retains 60% original blue finish with a smooth gray patina on the balance. The wood is very fine showing some minor handing marks with some blemishes in the checkering. The rubber recoil pad has collapsed and hardened. Mechanically excellent.

Rare, Late Production New Haven Arms Henry Lever Action Rifle

Lot # 17 (Sale Order: 17 of 960)

Rare, Late Production New Haven Arms Henry Lever Action Rifle

Late production Henry lever action rifle manufactured in 1866 and serial numbered in the Winchester Model 1866 serial number range. The receiver has the same round top and rounded upper edges as the Model 1866. A similar Henry rifle receiver is illustrated and described on page 51 of "THE WINCHESTER BOOK" by George Madis. This rifle has the distinctive Henry brass receiver and buttplate with 24 inch octagon barrel and integral 15-shot magazine. The stock is straight grain American walnut. The rifle has the late production features which include, straight back, nickel silver, front sight blade, beveled magazine follower cut in the receiver and second style buttplate with sharply pointed heel. The rifle has a folding leaf rear sight. The left side of the stock is fitted with a sling swivel, and the left side of the barrel has a screw-fastened loop for a sling hook. The sling swivel and hook loop were standard on late production Henry rifles. The buttplate has a hinged brass trap door. The top of the barrel is roll-stamped with the second style New Haven Arms Co. legend introduced about serial number 4000. This legend: "HENRY'S PATENT. OCT. 16. 1860/MANUFACT'D BY THE NEW HAVEN ARMS CO. NEWHAVEN. CT." is located on the top barrel flat ahead of the rear sight and is larger than the legend found on early Henry rifle barrel and has all serif letters. The top of the barrel is stamped with the serial number "14338" between the rear sight and the receiver. "14338" is also stamped on the inside of the buttplate, on the left side of the lower tang (under stock wrist) and in the upper stock inlet. All of the visible serial numbers match. The buttplate and stock screws are, correctly, not serial numbered. "1133" is stamped on the right side of the stock; the significance of this number is not known.

Class: Antique

Good. The rifle has been rechambered to center fire, period retailer refinished and has a period replacement magazine follower and modern rear sight leaf. The barrel, magazine, hammer, magazine follower and trigger have a high polish blue finish and the receiver and buttplate have been silver-plated. The barrel edges are sharp and the New Haven Arms legend and serial number are crisp. Some light pitting is visible underneath the high polish blue finish. The receiver and buttplate are in very good overall condition and retain about 20% of the silver-plated finish in protected areas. The case colors on the lever have aged to a gray-brown patina. The stock has been re-varnished and is in good overall condition with a hair-line crack in the left wrist and some chipping along the left edge of the upper tang. This is a good example of a rare late production Henry rifle with Model 1866 Winchester style round receiver profile serial numbered in the Model 1866 Winchester serial number range.

The rifle has the Third Model features which include moderately curved receiver profile and the serial number "129943" stamped in block letters behind the trigger. The left side of the receiver features unusual cross-hatching between the scroll-work and has an embedded wolf head in the scroll-work behind the game scene. The engraving on the left side of the rifle is very similar to the engraving on the Model 1866 Musket serial number 134957 and the Model 1866 rifle, serial number 128455, illustrated on pages 77 and 78 of "The Book of Winchester Engraving" by R.L. The barrel has a standard sporting style front sight with nickel-silver blade and a folding leaf rear sight with external spring, vee-top leaf and 900 yard center notch. Factory sling swivels are mounted on the forearm cap and stock. Very food as partially refinished (wood and magazine tube). The rifle retains traces of the original blue and gold-plated finish. The blue finish on the barrel has aged to a very attractive plum patina. The magazine tube is refinished with an artificial brown. The metal surfaces are smooth, the edges are sharp and the barrel legend is crisp. The receiver has considerable gold wash finish in protected areas while the brass forearm cap and buttplate have a good looking patina. The case colors on the hammer, trigger and lever have aged to a deep brown patina. The semi-deluxe walnut stock and forearm have been revarnished and are in very good condition with a few scattered, minor handling marks. This is a good looking example of a scarce Ulrich factory engraved Third Model Winchester 1866 rifle.

The oval Winchester "WP" proof marks are stamped on the top of the barrel and receiver surrounded by engraving. The serial number, "565676" is stamped across the underside of the receiver.

Class: Curio & Relic Long Gun

Very fine. The rifle retains 80% plus of the original blue finish. The barrel and magazine have most of the blue finish remaining with the exception of some wear on the barrel edges and the normal takedown marks on the magazine and magazine band. The blue finish is thin on the forearm cap, take-down collar and receiver contact points. The blue finish on the buttplate has faded to a blue/gray patina. The case colors on the hammer and lever have faded to a smooth silver-gray patina. The detailed scroll and border engraving and game scenes are sharp. The oil finish highly figured fancy grade stock and forearm are both very good. The checkering shows moderate handling wear and the bottom and left side of the stock have some scattered minor handling marks. This is a fine example of a desirable factory engraved Winchester Model 1894 Fancy Sporting Takedown Rifle formerly in the Arlin McCroskie Collection.
