Inscribed Winchester Model 1873 Lever Action Rifle with Unique Dual Tone Finish and Factory Letter

Lot # 1000 (Sale Order: 1 of 957)

Inscribed Winchester Model 1873 Lever Action Rifle with Unique Dual Tone Finish and Factory Letter

This late Second Model rifle was manufactured in 1881 and multiple special order style features including rotating front sling swivel, single set trigger, and nickel plated side plates, lever, and buttplate. It also has a dovetailed beaded blade front sight with folding hood, sporting rear sight, long range tang mounted peep sight and a standard sporting rifle forearm and straight wrist stock. It is marked with the two line address and King's improvement marking on the top flat ahead of the rear sight, caliber designation on top at the breech and on the cartridge elevator, "MODEL 1873" under the peep sight base, and the serial number on the lower tang. In addition, the left side plate is inscribed "Geo. W. Green/Pgh, Pa. Fe. 21st 1883". Records indicate George W. Green on September 29, 1883 was registered as a physician and was born in and then residing in New Castle which is part of the greater Pittsburgh metropolitan area. No factory letter available to writer at time of description. The factory letter confirms the caliber, octagon barrel, set trigger, and that it was received in the warehouse on October 19, 1881, and shipped on November 16 of that year (crossed out in the records). It is listed as returned in October of 1882 and shipped out again on November 17, 1882. The unique finish and inscription was likely added at that time.

Class: Antique

Very fine. The rifle retains 75% of the thinning original blue finish and has a brown patina forming. 85% of the frosted original nickel plating which is flaking in some places. The wood is very good and has moderate handling wear, some gouges and slivers absent from the forearm, a few dents and dings on the buttstock, and some small chips. The markings are crisp throughout, and the action is excellent.

Lot # 1001 (Sale Order: 2 of 957)

Unique Winchester Russian Model 1895 Lever Action Musket

This Model 1895 is chambered for the Russian 7.62x54R cartridge and was manufactured in 1916. Engraved New Haven Arms Henry Lever Action Rifle

Lot # 1006 (Sale Order: 7 of 957)

Engraved New Haven Arms Henry Lever Action Rifle

Henry lever action rifle manufactured by the New Haven Arms Company circa April 1865. The rifle is engraved and has a gold-plated brass receiver and crescent buttplate. The engraving covers the sides and top of the receiver and butt plate heel and features floral and scroll patterns on a punch-dot background with scallop and line borders. The engraving on this rifle is very similar to the engraving on Henry rifle serial number 11,215 illustrated on page 50 of "The Winchester Book" by George Madis. Most of the engraving on Henry rifles was the work of Samuel J. Hoggson. This rifle has the late production features which include: (1) square back, nickel-silver front sight blade, (2) second style barrel legend, (3) large magazine follower and beveled receiver follower cut, (4) sling swivel on the left side of the butt and sling hook loop on the left side of the barrel and (5) buttplate with sharply pointed heel. The folding leaf rear sight has a 900 yard center notch and slide stop screw. The barrel is roll-stamped with the larger, second style, legend: "HENRY'S PATENT. OCT. 16. 1860/MANUFACT'D BY THE NEWHAVEN ARMS CO.NEWHAVEN.CT." with all serif letters. The serial number, "9106" is stamped: (1) on the top of the barrel between the rear sight and the receiver, (2) on the left side of the lower receiver tang, (3) in the upper tang inlet of the stock and (4) on the inside of the buttplate. All of the visible serial numbers match. The late style, cap head, screws on the butt plate and receiver are correctly not serial numbered.

Class: Antique

Good as refinished/regilted. The barrel/magazine has been cleaned and has an even artificial brown patina. The surfaces of the barrel/magazine are smooth with sharp edges and crisp original barrel address and serial number. The front sight blade has been filed to slightly alter the configuration. The rear sight is a modern replacement. The brass receiver and buttplate retain 70% of the period regilted finish. The engraving is sharp and shows minimal handling wear. The receiver is in very good condition with minimal handling wear and tight, un-blemished side-plate joints. The buttplate has expected wear on the heel and toe but otherwise retains nearly all of the regilted finish. The straight grain walnut stock has been stripped and re-oiled and is in good condition with a few scattered, minor, handling marks. This is a solid representative example of a scarce engraved Henry rifle.

Commemorative Winchester Model 1873 Lever Action Saddle Ring Carbine Marked Buffalo Bill's Wild West

Lot # 1007 (Sale Order: 8 of 957)

Commemorative Winchester Model 1873 Lever Action Saddle Ring Carbine Marked Buffalo Bill's Wild West/Johnny Baker

This Winchester Model 1873 lever action saddle ring carbine reportedly once belonged to Wild West showman Johnny Baker. Born in 1869 at North Platte, Nebraska, Lewis H. "Johnny" Baker joined the famous Buffalo Bill's Wild West show at the young age of 16 as "The Cowboy Kid." Baker quickly befriended exhibition shooter Annie Oakley and under her guidance learned the skills of a trick shooter. Oakley and Baker commonly performed together, with Baker (always the chivalrous one) refusing to win a match. Even by his own admission, he could never out-shoot Oakley. Gradually Baker took on more managerial duties of the Wild West and in the wake of show owner William Cody's (Buffalo Bill) death tried to revive the financially struggling show. Baker had won Cody's affection and vice versa. Reportedly some of Cody's last words before he died in Denver were directed to Baker: "I wish Johnny would come." After hearing of Cody's collapse, Baker had boarded a train in New York but arrived too late to say goodbye to his friend. In 1921, Baker and his wife opened a museum next to Buffalo Bill's gravesite with much of the artifacts coming from Baker's own collection. Today the museum is administrated by the City and County of Denver. For his own tombstone, Baker requested "Foster Son of Col. William F. Cody (Buffalo Bill)." According to the consignor's research, a 44 caliber carbine was nickel plated at the Winchester factory and left the factory on October 12, 1887. (This carbine is chrome plated, thus making it a mid 20th century finished arm!).The factory records did not indicate a smoothbore carbine when the firearm left the factory. Instead, it is likely that the heavily used original barrel was shot smooth or replaced. In either case this carbine was definitely a firearm used for a shooting act. The side plates and front receiver sides have a dull gray finish with bright acid etched markings: a uniform star pattern on the receiver, "BUFFALO BILL'S/WILD WEST" on the left side plate and "JOHNNY BAKER" on the right side plate. The top of the barrel is marked with the two line address/King's improve patent dates ahead of the rear sight. It feature a fixed front sight, folding ladder carbine rear sight, full length magazine tube, two barrel bands, the distinctive Third Model dust cover rail integral to the top of the receiver and saddle ring staple with ring on the left side of the receiver. There are no caliber markings. The upper tang is marked "MODEL 1873" and the serial number is on the lower tang. Mounted with a smooth walnut forearm and straight grip stock with an iron carbine buttplate with compartment (cleaning rod not included).

Class: Antique

Very good as custom inscribed chrome plated. The carbine retains 95% of the chrome finish with most of the loss regulated to the buttplate. There is some very scattered minor pitting. The wood is fair as expected with a heavily used show gun, showing a leather repair wrap on the wrist, a few stress cracks along the grain and some minor pressure dents and scratches. Mechanically fine.

Winchester Model 1866 Lever Action Rifle

This rifle has the later style serial number marking between the trigger and lever latch but an earlier model style frame with more pronounced drop at the hammer. Outstanding and Rare, Inscribed First Model Winchester 1876 "Open Top" Rifle with Factory Letter

Lot # 1009 (Sale Order: 10 of 957)

Outstanding and Rare, Inscribed First Model Winchester 1876 "Open Top" Rifle with Factory Letter

This is an excellent and very rare example of a First Model Winchester 1876 open top rifle. These early production guns feature no dust cover hence the name "open top". Only 3000 of these First Model rifles were produced before a dust cover was installed making them extremely scarce. Winchester production of the model 1876 was extremely limited in comparison to the other models of this time and only a mere 66,000 1876 rifles were manufactured making them rare and desirable in any condition or variation. The first model represent the most desirable collector configuration outside of the "1 of 100" and "1of 1000". Accompanied by a factory letter confirming this rifles configuration and states, "Rifle, Octagon Barrel, Set Trigger. Received in the warehouse February 21, 1878 and shipped from the warehouse on July 6, 1878". The lower tang is numbered "1625", which is well within the First Model range, making this a second year production rifle. The underside of the brass cartridge carrier in inscribed with the original owners initials "AJC". The initials are certainly factory quality work and if not done in the factory they are of a professional, and period Jewelers hand. Rock Mountain German silver front sight with folding graduated to 1,000 yards rear sight. The top of the barrel is marked "WINCHESTER'S - REPEATING ARMS. NEW HAVEN. CT. / KING'S- IMPROVEMENT - PATENTED - MARCH 29, 1866. OCTOBER 16. 1860." ahead of the rear sight, there is no caliber markings on the barrel or carrier. The upper tang is marked with the early style "MODEL 1876" . Blue barrel, magazine tube and frame. Casehardened hammer, lever, and crescent steel buttplate, with cleaning rod in the butt trap. Finished with a smooth oiled forearm and straight grip stock.

Class: Antique

Very Fine. The barrel retains a strong 85% plus original blue finish exhibiting only slight thinning on high edges and some scattered minor surface scratches. 60% original blue finish remains on the magazine tube the balance is a mottled plumb/brown patina which is concentrated to the underside of the tube. The frame retains 90-95% original blue finish with very minor wear to exposed edges and some casual overall collector type handling marks. The tang shows evidence of a a removed vernier tang sight. The loading gate still maintains a strong percent of its original niter blue finish and shows no signs of typical cartridge wear indicating very little use. The hammer and lever exhibit strong original but dark case color hues. The wood is very good showing and old coat of varnish otherwise some scattered minor pressure marks. The action is excellent. Overall a very scarce inscribed First Model "Open Top" Winchester 1876 Rifle, in condition that would difficult to improve upon.

Rare, FRESH and Important Factory Exhibition Quality Conrad Ulrich Deep Relief Panel Scene Engraved

Lot # 1010 (Sale Order: 11 of 957)

Rare, FRESH and Important Factory Exhibition Quality Conrad Ulrich Deep Relief Panel Scene Engraved Winchester Model 1866 Rifle with Nickel Trim

This Winchester Model 1866 rifle was manufactured in 1870 and decorated with highly detailed relief engraving on the forearm cap, receiver and buttplate. Although the rifle is not signed externally, the engraving was probably executed by Conrad Ulrich and represents some of his most elaborate work. The right side of the receiver has three separate game scenes. The central scene on the sideplate apparently is an illusion to Greek mythology and depicts a nude seated upon a lion. A smaller scene to the rear of the sideplate depicts a grazing African antelope while the forward portion of the receiver depicts a relief-engraved elk. A hound is engraved in the scrollwork above the loading gate. An identical elk is relief-engraved on the left front of the receiver. The left sideplate and the rear portion of the receiver feature a stampeding herd of six bison. The receiver scenes are are surrounded by elaborate relief-engraved borders and tight scrollwork on a punch-dot background. The brass receiver, forearm cap and crescent buttplate have a gold washed finish. The octagon barrel, full length magazine, hammer, pointed special trigger and lever are nickel plated. Factory sling loops are mounted on the stock and forearm. The barrel has a dovetail mounted front sight and Henry style folding leaf rear sight with rounded top and 800 yard center notch. The buttplate has a Henry style hinged trap. The stock and forearm are fancy grade walnut. The top of the barrel is roll-stamped with the two-line legend: "WINCHESTER'S-REPEATING ARMS. NEW HAVEN. CT./KING'S-IMPROVEMENT-PATENTED-MARCH 29. 1866. OCTOBER 16. 1860." in two lines ahead of the rear sight. The serial number, "79926" is stamped in block numerals behind the trigger surrounded by engraved flourishes.

Class: Antique

Very good. The rifle retains 20% of the gold washed and 30% nickel plated finish. Traces of the delicate gold washed finish remain on protected areas of the receiver, forearm cap and buttplate. The balance of the brass components have a very attractive, untouched, patina. The highly detailed engraving remains deep and crisp. The nickel plated finish on the barrel, magazine, hammer, trigger and lever is flaked and the metal surfaces show scattered pitting. The rear sight leaf has been repaired, and the front sight blade is missing. The stock and forearm are in good overall condition with most of the wear confined to the forearm. The upper edges of both sides of the forearm are chipped at the junction with the receiver and there is a gap between the front edges of the forearm and the forearm cap. The stock has a number of minor handling marks but is in good overall condition. The elaborate relief engraving is in fine condition. This is an outstanding example of a Winchester Model 1866 with unique and very elaborate factory panel scene engraving that rivals the best Ulrich engraved Winchesters.

Lot # 1015 (Sale Order: 16 of 957)

Exceptional Highly Desirable Early Winchester Second Model 1876 Lever Action Rifle

Winchester Model 1876 rifle manufactured in 1877. The rifle has the Second Model receiver with dust cover guide attached by two screws. The dust cover has the distinctive stamped oval finger guide. The rifle has a 28-inch full octagon barrel, full length magazine and oil-finished walnut stock and forearm. The barrel, magazine, forearm cap, receiver, dust cover and crescent buttplate are blued and the hammer and lever are color case-hardened. The loading gate has a niter blue finish. The barrel has a standard sporting style front sight with nickel silver blade and folding leaf rear sight. The rear sight is marked "1876" at the top of the leaf and graduated from 200-1000 yards (2-10). The second style buttplate has a sliding brass trap door and the butt trap contains a four-piece, jointed, steel cleaning rod with brass tip. The upper receiver tang is factory drilled and tapped. The top of the barrel is roll-stamped with the two-line legend: "WINCHESTER'S-REPEATING ARMS. NEW HAVEN. CT./KING'S-IMPROVEMENT-PATENTED-MARCH 29. 1866. OCTOBER 16. 1860." ahead of the rear sight. The upper receiver tang is roll-stamped: "MODEL. 1876." in fancy letters and the serial number "4024" is stamped in script numerals on the lower tang between the lever latch and the tang screw. The barrel and cartridge elevator have no caliber markings which indicates that this rifle is chambered for the .45-75 W.C.F. cartridge that was the standard chambering for Model 1876 rifles and carbines.

Class: Antique

Exceptionally fine. The rifle is all original with 90% of the slightly faded original blue and color casehardened finish. The blue finish on the barrel, magazine, forearm cap, receiver and dust cover shows very little wear. The buttplate has the expected handling and storage wear and retains 80% of the blue finish. Most of the fire blue finish is present on the loading gate. The hammer and lever retain at least 95% of the color case-hardened finish with strong case colors. The straight grain American walnut stock and forearm are both in very fine condition and have about 90% of the original finish intact. Wear is limited to a few insignificant handling marks. The barrel and receiver markings are sharp. This is an excellent example of a scarce Model 1876 Winchester 'Centennial' rifle that would be difficult to improve upon.

Lot # 1020 (Sale Order: 21 of 957)

Stunning Historic Volcanic Repeating Arms Lever Action Navy Pistol Documented from the Winchester Gun Museum with Cody Letter

Manufactured by the Volcanic Repeating Arms Company circa 1857. This pistol is accompanied by a letter from the Buffalo Bill Historical Center that states it was on a loan exhibit at the Winchester Gun Museum from 1950-1974. The pistol has the distinctive brass (gunmetal) frame with eight inch octagon barrel, integral ten shot magazine and loading lever with finger hole. The barrel has a thin silver cone front sight. A simple fixed notch rear sight is mounted in a dovetail on the frame. The top of the barrel is roll-stamped with the legend: "THE VOLCANIC/REPEATING ARMS CO./PATENT NEWHAVEN CONN. FEB. 14. 1854." in three lines. The serial number "1514" is stamped on the right side of the loading lever, the left side of the frame underneath the grip and on the inside of both grips. All of the visible serial numbers match. The barrel and magazine have a high polish blue finish, and the hammer, trigger and lever are color casehardened. The rear sight, cartridge elevator, bolt, trigger spring and interior components have a fire blue finish. The two piece grips are nicely figured walnut with a piano finish. The Volcanic pistols and carbines are historic firearms that represent a major step in the evolution of American firearms. The combination of internal, spring loaded, magazine, lever action and self-contained, primed cartridges were revolutionary features in 1857. The Volcanic action, when combined with reliable metallic cartridges, was the basis for the Henry rifle and Winchester Model 1866, 1873 and 1876 rifles. Oliver Winchester's investment in the Volcanic Repeating Arms Company in 1855 ultimately led to the establishment of the Winchester Repeating Arms Company.

Class: Antique

Excellent. The pistol is all original and shows only very minor storage and handling wear. The barrel and integral magazine retain 97% plus of the high polish blue finish with traces of thinning on high points and edges. The barrel legend is extremely sharp. The frame has a mellow, untouched patina with minimal handling wear. The side plate joints are perfect. The hammer, trigger and lever retain 90% of the color casehardened finish with strong case colors. The rear sight, bolt, cartridge elevator and trigger spring all have most of the fire blue finish. The grips are both in excellent condition with a few minor storage marks and one minor scratch on the edge of the right heel. The grips retain close to 98% of the high polish piano finish. The pistol appears to be un-fired. This is a stunning example of a historic Volcanic Repeating Arms Co. Lever Action Navy Holster pistol. It is certainly one of the very best examples of its type we have ever offered at auction!
