34" round - blue about 95% possibly refinished by Argentine arsenal as lettering in pristine condition - Stocks: Beautiful dark walnut throughout, very light handling marks - Sights: Front blocked blade sight; Look for the finest rear sight ever fitted to a military rolling block During this period of history Argentina was a developing world power, strongly influenced by German developments This flip up leaf sight, ordered from Remington, is a duplicate of the Austrian Werndl sight and excellent in every respect - Markings: faint to crisp upper tang 3 line "E REMINGTON & SONS ILION NY U.S.A. / MAY 3D 1864 MAY 7TH JUNE 11THNOV 12TH DEC 24TH 1872 / DEC 31ST 1872 SEPT 9TH 1873 JAN 12TH MARCH 16TH 1874" on top of breech "MODELO ARGENTINO. 1879 E.N." (E.N. = Ejercito National = National Army, To distinguish from National Police)and under forearm stock on bbl on left side by receiver is the Remington "B" proofmark - Most M1879s appear to be in excellent condition. It has been suggested that Remington had a significant overrun of the rifles as Argentina's extensive trials for a replacement in the 1880's, adopted the Mauser in 1891. It forced Remington to assemble and sell the overrun directly to the US civilian market. This may be one of those civilian sold rifles, for its exceptional condition, furnished with the sliding extractor(as opposed to a later adopted rotary extractor variant); Equipped with ram rod & sling swivels A beautiful specimen. - - NRA: Excellent - SN: NSN - Est: 450 - 750 - Antq - INV 8407

"The star appears to be an integral part of the serial number, stamped when the receiver was made and not a separate stamp applied some time later." It is the opinion of Frasca & Hill "that starred weapons designate arms that were cleaned and repaired by the Armory, and that the starred receivers were specially manufactured for use on these repaired arms and were so marked to differentiate between a repaired arm and a newly manufactured arm." In addition "most starred arms will have and early lock plate or both." It is of our opinion that this gun is true and correct . They are intact on this rifle but, muzzle is worn & as said before, butt plate has loss of metal In 1868 a large order was placed with Remington by the Egyptian Government for the No. 1 Remington Military Rifle to be chambered in the ".43 Egyptian" cartridge, governments at that time considering it a matter of national prestige to field arms with proprietary cartridges. Before the order could be delivered, Egypt (which had had close ties with the French since the Napoleonic excursions and the building of the Suez canal), "defaulted" so that a large part of the order could be sold to France as she was greatly under armed during the Franco-Prussian War of 1870-71. It is estimated that some 13,000 such rifles were delivered to France at that time However, the original order was again placed and by 1876 the last of some 60,000 rifles were delivered. (According to militaryrifles.com) This rifle shows the very typical near century of hard use in the sands of North Africa Equipped with bayonet lug; missing ram rod - - NRA: Good - SN: NSN - Est: 300 - 600 - Antq - INV 8657

29.25 octagon - brown/plum patina barrel to brown checkered pattern; chocolate patina lock & double set triggers - Stocks: brass rectangle on cheek piece; brass scrolled hook & trigger guard, thimble, nose cap, & crescent butt plate fastened with Leman's signature 5 screw heel to toe design; dark maple 1/2 stock; minor handling marks - replacement ram rod - Sights:  fixed front blade & rear buckhorn sight - Markings: The lock plate has a floral scroll engraving and is marked "LEMAN/LANCTR, PA" - From the late 1830's to the Civil War, Henry Leman was one of the largest gun makers in the U.S. Certainly, during this period, he was the foremost producer of Indian guns. While he produced a variety of styles for the general market, his major customer was the federal government for the Indian trade. Unlike most others, Leman did not take advantage of the demands of the Civil War. Rather, he concentrated on the production of sporting rifles, with smaller cap boxes & half stocks. As per the checkered engravings through the top of the shorter barrel, this could have very well been one of those later model fur trade guns. Overall a beautifully aged plain Plains rifle. Mechanics are sound. - - NRA: Very Good - SN: NSN - Est: 750 - 1750 - Antq - INV 8645
