Scarce Early Swedish Royal Order Of The Sword Medal-Cased Lot #6 (Sale Order 6 of 270) Silver Maltese cross decussate with ball-tipped finials and with silver Swedish crowns between the arms, with crossed swords above and on swivel crown suspension indicating wartime issue-The face has a circular central deep blue enamel medallion bearing in gilt an upright sword and the three crowns of Sweden; the reverse with a circular central medallion with horizontal hatching bearing an upright sword imposed on a laurel wreath, inscribed ‘PRO PATRIA’ (Latin = for Fatherland); on original ribbon and in original case. The Order of the Sword was instituted on 23 February 1748 by King Fredrik I, reinstating an Order dating from the 12th Century, to be awarded to officers for long and faithful service. On 26 June 1850, the Sword Cross was added for award to non-commissioned officers and the Sword Medal for other ranks, both for at least 16 years’ service. The order has not been presented since 1974. A very fine example and scarce!

1924 Dr. Hugo Eckener Commemorative Medallion-Zeppelin Lot #107 (Sale Order 108 of 270) 1924 German medallion honoring Dr. Hugo Eckener and the famous 1924 transatlantic flight of the LZ-126 Zeppelin from Germany to New Jersey. The medallion is silver and measures 33mm. It was made by Lauer of Nuremberg. The obverse is a bust of D r Hugo Eckener and the reverse is a image Zeppelin LZ-126 in flight over coastal view. The LZ-126 was built in Friedrichshafen in 1924. Upon arrival in America, it was given to the US as part of World War I war reparations. The LZ-126 was commissioned into the US Navy and redesignated ZR-3, and remained in service until 1932. Unlike many sister ships, ZR-3 did not meet with a disastrous end and was finally dismantled in her hanger in 1939. The LZ-126 (ZR-3) was the longest serving rigid airship ever operated by the US Navy. The is not an uncirculated medal. The medal has minor wear to the high relief areas. It has not been cleaned and has a nice patina. It is a fine piece and quite rare!

The Order had its origins in the time of the Crusades during the siege of Acre in 1190 with the establishment of a hospital for German soldiers but had largely disappeared when it was revivified in 1871 under Imperial patronage with first Archduke Wilhelm and then Archduke Eugen as High Grand Master to encourage and support voluntary hospitals and medical care. This striking award is relatively rare and was not awarded after the fall of the Hapsburg Empire in 1918.

The silver-toned table medal measures 2 ¾" in diameter. The obverse shows a high relief bust of von Bismarck in profile, wearing a pickelhaube. Von Bismarck’s likeness is highly-detailed, including his massive mustache and stern visage. Circling around his likeness is the legend declaring him the master-builder of the German Empire, "Fürst Bismarck Der Baumeister des Deutschen Reichs." The reverse shows his coat of arms and a lengthy quote-With original case.

LABOR VINCIT OMNIA’ (by valor and industry; work conquers all); the reverse plain with engraved attribution to ‘R. It weighs 46.5 grams- The Medal is awarded for long and exemplary service in the Corps.
