In the early 1900’s they transitioned from solid gold, to silver and gold plated costume jewelry. Because this is solid 10K and not gold filled, this piece pre-dates the transition in materials and was likely made in the early 1920’s. It is stamped “10K PSCO” and is in very good condition. This is a very unique ring with some mystery to it! Featuring a single round prong set 1/3 ct pink sapphire set in a wide, 14k yellow gold band, we have been unable to determine an age. There are six prongs for a fairly small stone, which is unusual. The stone also has some abrading, which would be expected on a very old ring. Sapphires are hard stones and are not easily damaged, indicating long wear or multiple wearers over time. The band is stamped with a Birmingham, England gold assay mark (an anchor), but no gold purity mark. Since it tests 14K, it should be marked 585. It’s possible the band is old enough that it wasn’t marked, or the mark was not imprinted as strongly as the assay mark and it wore off over time. The size 9 ring is also very large for it’s suspected age, particularly for a woman (average ring size 80 years ago was about a 5.5), indicating the stone may have been added later to a band originally made for a man. Regardless of it’s age, this is a lovely ring, very unique and perfect for the woman who loves everything pink! For the collector or historian, this could be a wonderful piece to investigate further.
