W85 Hajime Sorayama was born in 1947, in Imabari, Japan. Chinese Ivory Nude Medical Diagnostic Doll Lot #35 (Sale Order 34 of 167) Traditional Chinese doctor's doll used as diagnostic tool. Displayed on carved wood stand. It was the custom in China for ladies to describe their ills to the doctor by pointing to an area on the doctor doll. This was less embarrassing then pointing to one's own anatomy. Bracelets adorn wrists, with bound feet. Unblemished, dense and well marked with striations and Schreger lines, rich color of cream to gold, smooth unctuous surface polished to a high hand finish. Condition excellent, no chips or damage noted. Late 19th century to early 20th century. Because this piece is ivory, it can only be sold to a Nevada buyer. This comes from a home with many fine collectibles and is a highly prized item. Approx. 9 1/2". F20

Lithographs by (3 pieces) Steve Hanks Lot #50 (Sale Order 49 of 167) Born in California, Steve Hanks attended the Academy of Fine Arts in San Francisco, before transferring to the California College of Arts and Crafts where he graduated with his Bachelors of Fine Arts degree. After taking a job as a caretaker at a Campfire Girls camp in Cuba, New Mexico in 1976, he had the time to really begin experimenting with different media. He refers to his style as " emotional realism", as in most of his work the faces of the figures are either obscured, or not visible to those looking at the painting. This way, people can bring in their own ideas and interpretations. Sunlight plays a big role in his work, as he is " fascinated by how it filters through things". His portfolio expanded to include many domestic scenes as well, after he married and had children. Hanks has won many awards and is referred to as being a master of watercolor, as is evidenced in these three pieces. Steve Hanks was a master in his medium. That’s how friends and family remember the internationally known watercolor artist, who made Albuquerque his home for a big part of his life. He was especially noted for his portraits of women and children. Print By Edouard Chimot Lot #52 (Sale Order 51 of 167) Erotic print by Edouard Chimot shows woman revealing her bottom. Nicely framed. Measures: 7 3/4" x 10" W2 Edouard Chimot was an artist, illustrator, and editor whose career spanned the early twentieth century in France. Although his own artwork was very important to his career he was also responsible as an editor in bringing together some of the most wonderful talents of that period of French art. He was born in Lille, France, and it seems that he did not have his first exhibits until 1912, when he was already 32. It wasn't until he was 39 that he actually made his mark in the Paris art world. initially he had been trained as an architect, which could explain his late start, as could the beginning of the First world war. After the war, he published many etchings and his career explode when he became the artistic director of Les Editions D'Art, Devambez. During the 1920's, he also made at last two films and was incredibly successful until the Wall Street Crash. This basically wiped out the market for luxury goods like limited eition art books. Chimot and his wife, Loulou, sought refuge in Barcelona during WWII, and his artwork was never really the same. He died in Paris in 1959.

Lithograph, "Seated Woman"by William Russell Flint Lot #53 (Sale Order 52 of 167) Lithograph, Measures 13 1/2" x 17 1/2" ,F30 Sir William Russell Flint was a Scottish artist and illustrator, and is best known now for his incredible paintings of women. Not only was he a master at watercolors, but he also worked in oils, tempera, and printmaking. Flint was born in Edinburgh in 1880, and worked through his early years as a lithographic draftsman and a medical illustrator, before furthering his education in art at the British Museum. He was elected the president of Britain's Royal Society of Painters in watercolors in 1936, and was Knighted in 1947. This print is of a seated woman; it is vibrant in color - dated, 1934

Print "Woman Waiting" by B. Schulz Lot #56 (Sale Order 55 of 167) Print 74/100 Measures: 12 1/4" x 16 3/4" W38 Bruno Schulz was a Polish writer, artist and teacher born in 1892 to Jewish parents. In 1938 he was awarded the Golden Laurel Award from the Polish Academy of Literature for his works of prose. Many of his works have been lost to us because of the Holocaust. His story is interesting because while living in the Drohobycz Ghetto, a German Gestapo officer Felix Landau, loved his work so much that he extended him protection in order to finish a mural in Landau's residence. Unfortunately, he was shot and killed while walking back to his home by another Gestapo officer, Karl Gunther. He was shot because Landau had shot Gunther's "personal Jew", and this was revenge. His mural was painted over but was rediscovered in 2001, and is now located at The Bruno Schulz Museum in Drohobych. This print is indicative of Schulz's style of art, which has a very magical, fairy tale aspect to it.

Poster "Salome" by Rafal Olbinski Lot #57 (Sale Order 56 of 167) Poster Measures: 36 1/2" x 23 1/2" W15 Rafal Olbinski has received more than 100 awards for his work in poster design, and is known for his synthesis of surrealistic mood and symbolism, Olbinski emigrated from Poland to the United States in 1981, and in 1995 his poster was chosen by Mayor Rudolph Guliani as the official New York City Capital of the World Poster, and the following year he won the award for the best painting in the annual exhibition of the Society of Illustrators. Since 1995 he has worked as a professor at the School of Visual Arts in New York. "Salome", an opera composed by Richard Strauss, tells the story of the young princess and stepdaughter of Herod, Salome. Overtaken by her desire for the prophet Jokanaan (John the Baptist), she is devastated by his refection. When her lecherous stepfather offers to give her anything she wants, after dancing the famous Dance of the Seven Veils, she reveals herself to him and asks for Jokanaan's head on a silver platter. The opera is based on Oscar Wilde's play of the same name. During the famous dance, the soprano with the role of Salome usually disrobes completely on the stage, making it a rather risque performance.

Since 1995 he has worked as a professor at the School of Visual Arts in New York. The opera " Carmen" is one of the most famous operas of all time. Composed by Georges Bizet this was his only hit. The opera is composed using the "realism" method, so instead of the fantastical, these operas attempted to bring in the experiences, even the sordid and violent, of the every day; especially the life of the contemporary lower classes.

"A Summer Bath at Pompei"by Gustave CR Boulanger Lot #61 (Sale Order 60 of 167) Measures: 7 1/2" x 9 1/4" W8 Gustave Boulanger was a nineteenth century French figure painter who was best known for both his classical and Asian influenced subjects. He was born in Paris 1824. His works are excellent examples of academic art of the time, especially that of historical painting. Boulanger had visited Italy, Greece, and North Africa, and one can tell that he paid particular attention to details concerning cultural correctness and the female form. These are all things exemplified here in one of his best works, "A Summer Bath at Pompeii".

"Tightrope Walker" Osbert Sitwell Print Lot #72 (Sale Order 71 of 167) Measures: 7" x 8 1/2" W7 Sir Francis Osberrt Sacheverell Sitwell was born in London in December of 1892. He was an English writer who, like his siblings, devoted his life to art and literature, After joining the Sherwood Rangers in 1911, he discovered that he was not cut out to be a cavalryman and transferred over to the Grenadier Guards. In his off-duty time, he would visit theaters and art galleries. During the First World War, Sitwell was transferred to the trenches of France and it was there that he began to write his first poetry. "Babel" was published in 1916, and in the very same year he began to work on literary collections and athologies with his brother and sister - referring to themselves as the "Sitwells".

Print "Costumed Girls" , Sir William Russell Flint Lot #88 (Sale Order 86 of 167) Costumed Girls by Sir William Russell Flint Measure: 17 1/2" x 23" W21 & W74 Sir William Russell Flint was a Scottish artist and illustrator, and is best known now for his incredible paintings of women. Not only was he a master at watercolors, but he also worked in oils, tempera, and printmaking. Flint was born in Edinburgh in 1880, and worked through his early years as a lithographic draftsman and a medical illustrator, before furthering his education in art at the British Museum. He was elected the president of Britain's Royal Society of Painters in watercolors in 1936, and was Knighted in 1947. Flint made many visits to Spain, and was most impressed by the Spanish dancers, as seen here in these beautiful paintings. They were depicted in many of his works, in a very eroticized manner. This was much to the critics chagrin, but it caused him great commercial success!! He was active as an artist until his death in 1969.

Since 1995 he has worked as a professor at the School of Visual Arts in New York. "Aida" is an opera, composed by Giuseppe Verdi that takes place supposedly during the "Old Kingdom" of ancient Egypt. The opera itself was composed for the opening of an opera house in Cairo, Egypt, but was not finished in time. It has however, become one of the most famous operas in the world.

Catherine II was Empress of Russia for more than 30 years. Born Sophie Friederike Auguste von Anhalt-Zerbst on May 1729 in Stettin (now Szczecin in Poland), she became Catherine in 1745, after being received into the Russian Orthodox Church. She married Grand Duke Peter, grandson of Peter the Great and heir to the Russian throne. She took lovers, bestowing power and gifts on them – one was handed 1,000 indentured servants. She became a patron of the arts – you can see a vast array of her nicknacks in the Hermitage Museum. Earl McPherson Mermaid Oil on Canvas Lot #202 (Sale Order 161 of 167) Framed size; 48" x 36". Oil on canvas. Signed bas droit. Edgar Earl MacPherson was born on August 3, 1910, in Oklahoma. He moved to Los Angeles after high school, got a job painting movie posters for a downtown theatre, and took evening art classes at the Chouinard School of Art. In 1929. He set up shop at the Royal Hawaiian Hotel in Honolulu, painting portraits of wealthy guests. McPherson's smashing success with the Artist's Sketch Pad was followed by another triumph. Then his two deck set of Pin Up Girls playing cards for Brown & Bigelow, called, " Win, Lose, or Draw" received a total of 168,000 orders in four months. He began recieving contracts for pin up girl posters.MacPherson had painted a very famous pin-up image for the Shaw-Barton Calendar Company. The best-selling image in the company's 1941 line, Going Places was so popular that Lucky Strike cigarettes asked to reproduce it on their 1942 calendar with the caption "Lucky Strike Green Goes to War". In the early 1950s, MacPherson had his own television show in Arizona; about 1960, he moved to Tahiti and then travelled widely in the South Pacific. He died in December 1993.
