Bio: Emmett Fritz was born John Emmett Fritz October 13, 1917 in Kansas City and died in Florida on November 29, 1995. He studied at Pratt Institute in 1937, and studied briefly with the noted Norman Rockwell. He painted landscapes in New England through the late 1930's and 1940's, and also worked as an illustrator and as cartoonist for the comic strip "Roxie West". In 1950, he left New York and moved to St. Augustine, Florida, where he became an active and much-loved member of the thriving artists' community. A prolific painter in both oil and watercolor, Fritz had great success in his own colorful impressionist style depicting Caribbean islands and particularly street scenes of St. Augustine and Palm Beach. Vintage Japanese Sterling Silver Fan in Framed Shadow Box by Ohgi Takehiko.

The wooden frame glass case measures14,5" high x 18" wide x 2.75" deep including the base and the silver fan inside the case measures 7.0" wide x 4.5" high. Takehiko Seki is a well-known master silversmith who has been producing many elegant precious metal ornaments. Takehiko Seki II (Kazuo Seki) studied silversmith under his father Takehiko I since his middle school and he had established Seki Kohgei Co., Ltd. with his father in 1963 after he had graduated from college. He had received a prize from the Minister of Labor for his work "Image of the Sea" in 1989 and established himself as a silversmith in his own right and recognized as a Master of Traditional Crafts in 1990. He had succeeded his father's name Takehiko upon his fatherâe(tm)s 88th birthday in 1996. Their silversmith crafts are based on the traditional Japanese metal craft known as the Kazari-Shoku in Japanese and originally the Kazari-Shoku craftsmen work with metal sheets and produce decorative ornaments for Shinto shrines and Buddhist temples. It was Takehiko I who wanted to realize a wider range of exposure and recognition for the craft works that were made of precious metals (they work with gold as well) by blending his traditional craft with modern techniques and design. The motif on the fan is called the Shochikubai design and it is an auspicious decoration made up of the pine, bamboo and plum blossom symbolizing longevity, strength and beauty. The word itself is taken from their individual names, "sho" for pine, "chiku" for bamboo, and "bai" for plum. The combination of the three is considered to be particularly lucky. Also the shape of a spreading fan is considered good luck in Japan and it is called "Suehirogari. The spread fan has the shape that widens toward the end from the pivot and this implies good luck as prosperity and auspiciousness increase more and more as time goes. This is an Original Oil on Board “Fruit” by Renowned Listed Artist Barton Stone Hays (1826 - 1914) measuring with antique period frame approximately 22.5” x 12.5”. This piece is full of vibrant colors and is signed lower right “B.S. Hays. Barton Stone Hays was active/lived in Indiana, Ohio, Minnesota. Barton Hays is known for still life, portrait and landscape painting. A painter who lived in Indiana, Ohio and Minneapolis, Barton Hays began his career as a portrait painter in Wingate, Covington, and Attica, Ohio. In Attica, he also painted two panoramas relating to the book, "Uncle Tom's Cabin." After moving to Indianapolis, he went into partnership with daguerreotypist William Runnion and continued to paint portraits, becoming the city's leading painter of that subject. He was also a teacher at Mclean's Female Seminary, and William Merritt Chase was one of his students. In 1882, Hays moved to Minneapolis, where he focused much of his painting on still lifes, especially fruit on small table tops in a "soft, atmospheric background."
