Scarce 1829 Capped Bust Half dime 1/2 10c, Early date. A very scarce coin. According to Ron Guth from PCGS, ‘Half Dime production resumed in 1829 (none were produced after 1805). The design was a smaller version of the Capped Bust design that had been utlized on Dimes since 1809). Utilizing the most up-to-date technology, the Capped Bust Half Dimes were all struck with a "close" collar, an edge die that created uniform diameters and square edges on the coins.’ Out of an original mintage of 1,230,000, PCGS estimates only 2500 remain in all grades.

The collection was all submitted years ago by the collector themselves and have remained in storage since that time. The PCGS Rattler holders are so desireable because they were all graded in PCGS's innaugural year and in that year, even PCGS themselves today admit, were largly undergraded, by 1-2 points and PL & DMPL, held back where it would be assigned today. You rarely find rattlers anymore, because many have been sent in for regrading, and the ones you do come across have been in the market for years and are many times examples that cannot get an upgrade. This grouping is not like those. Never before sold into the secondary market, they are fresh and all well undergaded. Most of the coins in this group would get a 2 point upgrade. We will be offering these 40 over the next few weeks. We only have a few of these beauties left. This coin is graded ms62, but is clearly proof like. According to Ron Guth from PCGS, ‘1808 Half Cents are found with a "normal" date and an overdate (last 8 over a 7). "Normal" is in parentheses because the date is actually quite unusual -- the final 8 of the date was constructed by punching the zero of the denomination into the coin twice. Thus, the final 8 does not match the first 8 at all. With an original mintage of only 400,000, PCGS estimates only 500 remain in all grades.

After the US Government audited its vaults in the mid 70's they found a Hoard of Morgan Dollars in the basement vault in the federal reserve. Between 1973 and 1980 the Government Services Administration (GSA) Packaged these rare Morgan dollars and auctioned them off to the public. This example is the 1882-cc Carson City Morgan dollar in the GSA holder. The 1882-cc GSA is a slightly harder date. GSA's have been steadily going up over the last few months and are getting harder to find.

***Auction Highlight*** Redfield Collection 1882-s Morgan Silver Dollar $1 Graded Gem ms65. Super luster with some rim toning. Part of the LaVere Redfield collection better known as “the Redfield Hoard.” When he died in 1974, his estate was worth about $100 million, and in the basement of his modest home, behind a false wall was a hoard of over 411,000 silver dollars. Most of the silver_dollars were Morgan Dollars, and to a much lesser extent there were Peace_Dollars too. Many of them were still in their original mint bags. Just to give an idea of the size of 411,000 silver dollars; it is a weight of about 11-tons. LaVere Redfield has been called thrifty, frugal, and eccentric. After the Stock Market Crash of 1929, Redfield arrives in Los Angeles, CA with his life's savings, and had decided it was a good time to invest in Oil and Stocks. From California, Redfield moved to Reno, Nevada, and began to invest in Real Estate. It seems he would take as much of his liquid assets as possible and convert it into silver dollars whenever possible. That is most likely why he moved to Reno. With all the Casinos using silver Dollars, the Banks always had a ready supply. Estimates tell us that at one time LaVere Redfield had amassed over 600,000 silver dollars. In 1963, his house was burglarized, and it was reported that approximately 100,000 of the silver dollars were stolen. That is probably what encouraged him to build a false wall in front of his coal bin. That way, the only thing he had to do was to just drop the bags down the Coal Shute. If one would venture a guess, they would say that Redfield was not a numismatist, and they would be correct, but he did want his silver dollars unused and in original Mint bags whenever possible. Behind the wall was 400 bags of silver dollars, most of which had been sitting there for decades. When the coins were put up for auction, there were so many coins the lot could not be properly examined by the potential bidders, and when the hammer fell Steve Markoff of A-Mark Corporation purchased the entire lot for $7.3 million. It has since been estimated that the wholesale value of the Redfield Hoard of silver dollars was about $20 million. Paramount International Coin Corporation in Ohio was one of the main company’s used to sell the hoard. They packaged the Redfield silver dollars in a hard plastic holder with a cardboard label surrounding the coin reading either "A Silver Dollar from the Redfield Collection," or "US Silver Dollar, Paramount International Coin Corp." The Redfield Hoard created quite a stir within the coin community. It is not, nor has it ever been just about the coins, but rather it is the story that surrounds the coins. That is what makes it so exciting. Paramount graded this coin Gem ms65.

Part of the "Lincoln Highway Hoard". This Hoard received its’ name (pedigree) because of the proximity of the findings in a farmhouse in rural Pennsylvania near the Lincoln Highway. The hoard contained over 8,000 Morgan Silver Dollars, including many scarce dates and mintmarks secured directly from the release of the U.S. Treasury Hoard in the early 1960s. When the New York Mint of Minneapolis, MN, acquired the Hoard, they requested authenticating agencies to add the pedigree name to the label. Graded by NGC, One of America's Top 2 grading companies.
