Standing Camel Carousel Animal - RARE! Lot #205 (Sale Order 219 of 740) Standing Camel c approximately 1915 Measurement of length - 64": From West View Park where there were many Muller carvings, this Camel appears to be one of the Dentzel carvings on the machine. The confirming details are the buckle neck collar and bridle, as well as the scalloped trappings, so familiar in the Dentzel Hunting Hounds and Giraffes of the former Dollywood-now-Lancaster Dentzel carousel. The unusual eagle saddle and details of buckles make this carousel figure quite rare as a menagerie animal and a Dentzel. I understand this figure has been called a Muller and the identification can be very close, since so many details are identical in Dentzel and Muller factories--after all, Muller carved for Dentzel for many years. But, the Camel details strongly support the Dentzel ID and there were of record, Dentzel animals on the West View Park Carousels (there were 2 carousels in the Park).

1956 Bally Traffic Police Kiddie Ride Lot #227 (Sale Order 241 of 740) What started as an innovative Christmas present for Missouri-inventor James Otto Hahs’s children in 1930, the kiddie-ride-craze would eventually reach epic proportions by the 1950s. By 1953, the coin-operate ride industry was well on its way to being a $20-million-a-year business intended to not only entertain children, but sell product as well. Not only did they keep children entertained while their guardians were shopping, but it helped to market and sell thousands of dollars-worth of merchandise such as “cowboy suits, hats, holsters or equipment a youngster imagines he’s likely to need on a trip to outer space,” as “The Billboard,” the amusement industry’s leading newspaper, wrote in 1953. The industry had reached such a craze by then that “The Billboard” devoted a front-page story and a full 10-page special section to coin-operated kiddie rides. Kiddie rides of the time appealed to every aspect of a child’s imagination; rocket ships, cows, flying saucers, boats, cars and many other stylings followed in the footsteps of Hahs’s original coin-operated horse. While businesses were hesitant to create space for rides in the invention’s early years, by 1953 department stores, supermarkets, shopping centers and drugstores were making space for the new merchandising tool. Meanwhile, Chicago-based Lion Manufacturing Company—operating under the brand name Bally—was looking to make its break back into the gaming business following World War II. Having manufactured 6,000 fuses a day, seven days a week during the war, Lion started making bumper and six-pocket pool tables, as well as childrens’ amusement park rides. The Bally Traffic Police Bike was released in 1956 as a new coin-operated motorcycle ride, marketed as giving “youngsters a big dime’s worth of fun.” The coin-operated ride features a bouncy up-and-down motion with a slight side sway, which Lion said created an illusion of “exciting speed-chaser action,” claiming the machine could earn as much as $95 a week. The 2-seater ride featured a foot pedal that allowed the “driver” to speed up or slow down and a speedometer that actually registered speed from 20 to 50 MPH. Taking up only 53x27 inches, the kiddie ride’s siren was muted to be audible only in the immediate vicinity of the ride and featured adjustable riding times of 45 seconds, 1 minute, 90 seconds or 3 minutes. The Bally Traffic Police Bike offered here is in great shape and serves as an excellent example of Bally’s coin-operated kiddie rides. Please be aware, the originals came with two seats and did not have the additional headlamps on the front. This item has been restored, and during the restoration process the second seat was removed and affixed to the front were the additional lamps. The original is depicted in the ad shot from the 1950's.

Chas. Passow & Sons Saloon Backbar Lot #233 (Sale Order 247 of 740) Lot 233 Chas. Passow & Sons Salon Backbar Backbar built by Chas. Passow & Sons 840 W. Madison Chicago, Illinois. Passow was a leading manufacturer of billiard and saloon fixtures in Chicago from 1871 to about 1920 and was second only to Brunswick Balke Collander. This backbar comes from an original Hayward Wisconsin resort location and was found in a barn on the property along with the Racine Boat Co. canoe (Lot 231 ). The backbar, which dates from the early 1900's, measures 16'1" wide X 10'10" tall X 21" deep. The wood is mahogany finish birch. It has an arched top flanked by round tapered columns on either side. The capitols of the columns are done in leaded glass that can be lit from inside. The entire inside of the arch is done in green, red, and caramel leaded glass in a repetitive geometric design. There are no mirrors that come with this backbar but the mirror frame is intact. The bottom of the backbar has drawers and storage with glass front doors. Overall condition is good but it needs total restoration. The wood on the columns is sound with no warping or splitting. There are no cigarette burns on the top which is so often the case. The leaded glass has some damage to the tops of the columns and one side of the arch but there are extra panels that come with the unit so glass matching should not be a problem. Backbar breaks down into sections for easy transportation.

Mills Sonovision Moving Picture Machine Lot #432 (Sale Order 441 of 740) The Mills SonoVision was the post WW II successor to the popular Mills Panoram which had ceased production do to the war effort. Where the Panoram was used more as a juke box with movies of the band playing the music, the SonoVision could be used to play talking short subject movies as well. This made it appealing to not only bars but also restaurants and arcades where one could hear and see the latest news without goint to the movie theaters. Inside the 76" tall X 35" wide X 30" deep wood cabinet was a modified RCA 16mm sound movie projector which, through a series of mirrors, projected the image to a translucent plexiglass screen for veiwing the image. The films were specifically produced for Mills as the images had to be in reverse so that they projected correctly on the rear projection screen. The Sonovision hit the market in 1945 but with the advent of television they quickly fell out of favor. Production ceased in 1948 and very few of the machines survive today. This machine is all there in overall good condition and ready for restoration. It comes with an incredible 10 reels of film which is even rarer than the machines themselves. There is also a Mills Panoram coin box (lot 432A ) which came with the machine and is being sold separately. This is an incredible opportunity to own and restore a very scarce amusement machine. Model No. 474 Serial No. 1428.

This piece came out of a saloon in South Dakota. Only the glass was cleaned for photography purposes. Colonel Edmund Haynes Taylor, Jr. (a grand nephew of Gen. Zachary Taylor) established the O.F.C. (Old Fire Copper) Distillery in 1869 in Franklin County Kentucky. Taylor was different than most of the distillers of the time, whose tradition of distilling was a simple manufacturing operation. He had the instincts of a merchandiser. He placed emphasis upon "pure goods" and made his Old Taylor, Hermitage, O.F.C., and Carlisle brands a standard of bourbon quality. The O.F.C. Distillery was purchased by George Stagg in 1878, and, in 1904, renamed the George T. Stagg Distillery.

1829 Grand Harmonicon Glass Harp/Musical Glasses Lot #495 (Sale Order 515 of 740) RARE! Beautifully designed 1829 Grand Harmonicon was patented in 1825 by Francis H. Smith and revived interest in the glasses as a home instrument. This is one of only 8 made by an Englishman who then died so there were never any more. This was imported by great grand father Jones for a wedding present for his daughter Antoinette Sharp Jones when she married Joseph Moffatt April 25, 1833. There are several letters talking about this instrument and a handwritten family tree of everyone it was passed down to. Accompanied by a detailed instruction book, the glasses could be mastered by someone without previous musical training. The harmonicon used 24 glass bowls filled with water to give different pitches. The player produced the required pitches by rotating a wet finger around the rims of the bowls. It comes in a rectangular mahogany veneered case with a fold-up top and pedestal base, space for twenty-four mouth-blown, leaded glasses all marked with the appropriate note. One of the 24 glasses was replaced with a cut-off wine glass. Glasses are labeled for each note, but labels are wearing off. Each glass is etched at the bottom with the note. The case is chipped, top is cracked all the way down the middle and front knob/key is missing. Heavy pedestal on shaped plinth with paw feet is chipped and slightly wobbly. Dimensions (approx.): 34" (high) x 35.25" (wide) x 21.25" (deep)
