Of characteristic form, composed of a series of handwrought steel plates connected by rivets, completely covering the torso and shoulders, with applied brass studs to the reverse and much original finish. 17th century or later. Some wear, minor corrosion. The Bornu Empire was founded c. 1400 in what is now Northeast Nigeria, and endured until the late 19th century. A RARE PERSIAN KHANJAR DAGGER Lot #199 (Sale Order 199 of 540) A massive example, the hilt carved of very rare Reza'ye stone found only in the town of Mashad in Northern Iran, where the 8th Imam Reza was martyred at the beginning of the 9th century c.e. The broad, recurved blade is forged of Persian kara khorassan wootz; the forte and bolsters are embellished with fine gold-inlaid vinework. In its velvet-covered wooden scabbard. Late 18th century. Reza’ye stone is considered a potent talisman. Imam Reza’s touch is believed to have purified the brackish water from the riverbed where this stone is found; drinking it is considered a blessing. A RARE PRESENTATION INDIAN TULWAR SWORD Lot #226 (Sale Order 226 of 540) A massive example, the iron hilt finely inlaid in elaborate silver flowering vinework overall. The broad blade forged of pattern-welded damascus steel , with narrow fuller at the spine and expanded tip, chiseled at the right forte with Surya, the Hindu God of the Sun, and inscribed, THE RAJAH SAHEB DHARAMPUR. Beginning of the 19th century. Light wear. Presented by the Raja of Dharampur, the English inscription indicates the recipient was British, probably a high-ranking officer present on the occasion of the elevation of Dharampur to a British Protectorate on December 31, 1802. Surya the Sun God was the device of the ruling family, who were members of the Rajput Sisodia Dynasty. Surya remains the Dharampur state emblem and is depicted on its flag. Overall length 87.5 cm. AN IMPERIAL RUSSIAN M 1826 CAVALRY SABER Lot #269 (Sale Order 269 of 540) A rare, provenanced relic found on the field at Balaclava by the Earl of Glasgow in 1891 and so recorded on the engraved silver plaque fixed to the pommel. Imperial Russian forces captured numerous French AN XI cavalry sabers following Napoleon’s retreat. These swords were copied at Imperial arsenals, and both French captures and Russian copies were issued to troopers as the Russian Model 1826 cavalry saber. A RARE POLISH/ HUNGARIAN PARADE SHIELD Lot #285 (Sale Order 285 of 540) A fine, early Persian or Indian trophy shield wrought of wootz with characteristic forged-in border decorated with bands of vinework, forms the core to which elaborate gilded and engraved mounts embellished with a fine, translucent green enamel have been applied, including seven ovate tabs, a large, circular boss and rim in characteristic Polish-Hungarian style. The surface is additionally enriched with 24 gilded studs, each set with five turquoises, in concentric rings. The reverse with a pair of bronze lugs set with rings for a leather grip. 17th century. One boss restored, some turquoises lacking. Strong influence from Ottoman prototypes in Polish and Hungarian arms was common during the 17th century. See Z. A VICTORIAN-ERA ENGLISH TILTING ARMOR Lot #287 (Sale Order 287 of 540) A fine armor wrought in steel, made in Elizabethan tournament style. The helmet with high comb and characteristic visor and bevor sharing a pivot, the visor pierced for ventilation and secured to the skull by a hook, the neck lames articulated, with rolled, roped borders. Breastplate with central ridge, rolled and roped borders at the neck and arm gussets and flanged at the waist, the backplate likewise rolled and roped at neck and arm gussets. With complete arm defenses, the pauldrons with three upper plates and flared rims, the upper canons with rolled ridge, the rounded elbow cops with large couters, vambraces rolled at the cuff. The gauntlets well-articulated, with pointed cuffs, fingers intact. Each tasset wrought from a single plate with embossed lames over the velvet fauld with gilt braid border. The cuisses likewise wrought of a single plate with central ridge and rolled and roped borders, the poleyns en suite with the couters. The greaves well-modelled, with central ridge to the obverse and multi-lamed sabatons. C. 1830s. Minor dents and age darkening. One buckle lacking at the rear of the helmet, several straps worn. A FINE PERSIAN SHAMSHIR SWORD Lot #327 (Sale Order 327 of 540) Qajar Dynasty, the steel hilt with fully-modeled parrot’s head pommel, the grip chiseled overall with flowering vines and a central calligraphic panel, the guard with a falcon felling a bird, inlaid in gold throughout. The exceptional blade is archaic in design; both long and broad, wrought of superb Persian wootz displaying a dramatic pattern throughout, and chiseled at the forte with panels of flowering vines, with inlaid borders. Wrought with a set of interrupted fullers for its entire length on either side, each terminating in a bead, separated by a quatrefoil surrounded by inlaid springs and outlined with a narrow groove, with inlaid flowers in the interstices at the spine. From the floriated central spike, 18 triangular panels radiate, nine of which bear cartouches containing mythological and biblical characters, each supported by interlocking vinework. The broad border bears nine gods and heroes in cartouches, likewise separated by interlocking vinework panels. A RARE AFRICAN HELMET Lot #363 (Sale Order 363 of 540) Lotuko (or Latuka) People, South Sudan. An object of both protection and prestige, of characteristic ovate form, composed of human hair combined with fine twine derived from tree bark and felted to form a thick, rigid padding. A series of beaten brass plates are stitched to the exterior periphery, leaving the crown exposed; this is decorated with large brass studs. A POLISH TATAR SABER SWORD Lot #378 (Sale Order 378 of 540) The bronze hilt of stylized Tatar form, with characteristic short quillons and canted pommel, decorated with complex baroque modeling involving shells and scrollwork, with remains of original gilding. The blade likewise a conflation of Tatar and Polish styles: the broad forte tapering to the cutting edge, the yelman or back edge expanding abruptly from the spine, the sharp tip suited to both cutting and thrusting. At the forte are etched the cross and orb (one of the symbols of the Polish kings) amongst vinework, together with a Tatar tamga or clan mark inlaid in silver, comprising an arrow-shaped device flanked by Xs. Comprising a steel kabuto helmet in eboshi (nobleman’s court headgear) style, with black lacquer, five steel-plate shikoro and gilded and lacquered maedate in the form of a Buddhist maxim, and matching steel menpo. The do is steel studded with bosses formed as flowers, the rare sode of black-lacquered steel lames with flanged upper edge. The kote are composed of small plates connected by mail, the plated covering the forearm gilded, the kusazuri are likewise small plates, lacquered black en suite. The haidate are composed of mail with small, pierced and gilded plates interspersed, the suneate with gilded plates as are the lower plates of the kote. C. 1750. AN IMPORTANT INDIAN KIRACH SWORD Lot #383 (Sale Order 383 of 540) South Indian, likely Mysore. The hilt wrought entirely of silver, the pommel a fully modeled and highly detailed lion's head with the mane, whiskers, fangs and tongue superbly delineated, with areas of parcel gilding. The grip flares at the base and terminates in bud finials, with deeply embossed and engraved acanthus leaves and scrolls, together with a parrot on either side. The unusual double clamshell guard duplicates the form, function and decoration of those found on French swords of the period; it is quite thick, which both protects the hand well and allows for substantial embellishment on each side. Its beaded edge is likewise a typical border for smallsword guards and is echoed on the edge of the en suite silver scabbard tip as well. Suspended from the guard is a fine crimson silk knot of eight tassels. Each is of multi-stage type and is bound with colored and silver braid. The robust blade is of kirach form, straight, with a concave backedge that meets the tip in an even curve. Both the cutting edge and backedge are quite sharp and retain their original mirror-polished chamfer. The blade is characteristically forged of two wootz billets, the superior and finely-detailed pattern silver-white in contrast with discrete dark borders and tempered quite hard. A FINE GREEK YATAGHAN SWORD Lot #411 (Sale Order 411 of 540) The work of a master, the hilt and mounts wrought entirely of gilded silver, superbly embossed and engraved in motifs distinctly Greek, depicting Classical referents within a Revolutionary context designed to convey a visual narrative to a specific audience, i.e. co-combatants and/ or political allies of the Revolution: Classical-era helmets with characteristic horsehair crests, the dory spears and recurved bows with quivers of arrows described by Homer, both European drums and captured Ottoman drums, small cannon evoking those used at Patras under Karatzas in March, 1821, striped banners such as those which first appeared in Epidarus in 1822, together with well-detailed, clearly distinguishable Ottoman sabers, axes and war hammers, amongst festoons of flowers signifying victory, all framed in the rococo borders characteristic of Greek Neoclassicism. The exceptional drawing, balance and expert use of negative space, together with the high level of jeweler’s skills, far exceed the best Ottoman and European work of the period. Pyne was the first European to dwell in Afghanistan following the Second Afghan War (1879-81,) modernizing and standardizing the local manufacture of weapons and ammunition. He ultimately founded a royal arsenal and mint in Kabul; the Mazar-i-Sharif mark was likely devised by him as a symbol of the Afghan state, as it only appears on coinage minted in and after 1891 c.e. AN IMPORTANT GEORGIAN DAGGER Lot #444 (Sale Order 444 of 540) The hilt a single section of elephant, brilliantly carved and undercut, depicting an armed warrior on horseback hunting a rhinoceros among huge trees, behind which the massive casements of windows set in the stone walls of a castle are visible. The handwrought blade emulates the Yemeni form: broad at the forte, sharply curved, continuously tapering and double edged, with the addition of a distinctive bisected rectangular central rib. The velvet-covered wooden scabbard with applied galloon, mounted in silver, the locket finely filigreed with a Christian cross, the chape with engraved motifs showing Persian influence, the finial of Arab thum form. The symmetrical hilt of kindjal form and the elaborate and diverse decorative techniques found on the scabbard are consistent with Georgian work between 1800-1850. Second quarter of the 19th century.
