Brian Wilson Handwritten Letter To: Maharishi Lot #10H (Sale Order 52 of 315) The Beach Boys Handwritten Letter From: Brian Wilson To: Maharishi Re: Mike Love - This letter was found in a dresser drawer along with the photo slides and negatives in this auction in the Milton Love estate. Our client purchased a dresser at an estate sale, and these treasures were inside. This letter is a handwritten document that Brian Wilson wrote to Maharishi in the 1960's, asking him to have Mike Love return to LA for recording. This document is of particular significance because The Beach Boys met Maharishi in the 1960's at a Gala. After the meeting The Beach Boys and other high profile celebrities (even The Beatles) went to India to learn meditation techniques. In fact, it was said that their 1968 album titled "Friends" was influenced by the time they spent at the Maharishi retreat. The following is a story reported by MTV in 2014 regarding The Beach Boys and their relationship with Maharishi "After meeting Maharishi Mahesh Yogi at a UNICEF Variety Gala in Paris, France on December 15, 1967, Mike Love, along with other high-profile celebrities such as the Beatles traveled to Rishikesh in India during February and March of 1968. The following Beach Boys album Friends (1968) had certain songs influenced by the Transcendental Meditation taught by the Maharishi. Love had arranged for the Beach Boys to tour with the Maharishi in the US, which has been called "one of the most bizarre entertainments of the era". Starting on May 3, 1968, the tour lasted five dates but it was cancelled on May 5, 1968 when the Maharishi had to withdraw to fulfill his movie commitments. Each concert began with a lengthy, unintelligible lecture by the Hindu preacher. The tour was a financial disaster for the Beach Boys. Twenty-four tour dates were subsequently cancelled at a cost estimated at $250,000 for the band. The band's declining US popularity continued with the album's title song "Friends" becoming their least successful single since 1962." This is a once in a lifetime opportunity to own a piece of Rock n' Roll history that has never before been seen, and is handwritten by Brian Wilson, and signed by him. The letter not only mentions another widely famous Beach Boy, but is addressed to an individual that is thought to be responsible for the biggest loss in The Beach Boys' history. Please note: the document is not being photographed to keep it from being mass-produced. There has never been anything like this offered at auction. We have personally spoken with a representative for The Beach Boys, and they confirmed that this is part of the "Milton Love Lost Collection." All photo negatives, slides and documents are available for private viewing (by appointment only), you may schedule an appointment by emailing: Brigitte@gwsauctions.com. Dennis Wilson W/Wife Karen Lamm UNSEEN Slide 1978 Lot #10T (Sale Order 64 of 315) The Beach Boys Dennis Wilson W/Wife Karen Lamm NEVER BEFORE SEEN Photo Slide in Hotel Envelope W/Milton Love's Typed Notes on It (STUNNING BEACH SHOT) - This slide is from the estate of Milton Love, and were discovered in a drawer of a dresser that was purchased. These photos have never been released or seen by anyone outside of the Love/Wilson families. Milton Love is the father of one of the most famous Beach Boys, Mike Love (AKA Dr. Love). The negative is a never before released photo of Dennis Wilson with his (3rd & 4th) wife Karen Lamm. It is taken while the couple were at the beach, and it is absolutely one of the most romantic and beautiful shots we have ever seen of the couple (as there are not many that are so personal). This photo was taken in 1978, and was approximately 3 years before he passed away. Karen Lamm also passed, and this is a true piece of their love story. We will not be showing photographs of the slides to maintain their value as "Unreleased Photos". These items were never meant for release, as the family always assumed that someone had cleaned out the drawers of the dresser prior to selling it.
