President William Howard Taft, Original Derby

Wonderful piece of history with a letter of provenance from the owner. This derby was worn by President Taft during his visit to El Paso, Texas on October 16, 1909. Taft was meeting the President of Mexico Porfirio Diaz. Known as the"Most Eventful Diplomatic Event in the History of Two Nations", this was the first in history between a president of the United States and a president of Mexico. This derby was either blown off or knocked off Taft's head and fell into thecrowd where it was recovered, and due to the president's security, it could not be returned. The leather interior band has the initials "WHT", and was made for Frankenberger and Co., Charleston, W. Va, which supplied this derby tothe president. Also included it a medal (1-1/2" x 3-1/2") depicting the reason of Taft's visit.

"Hero of Little Round Top", Original autographed letter by Joshua L. Chamberlain to Hon. Elliot C. Cowdin, declining an invitation due to public engagements. Dated December 16th, 1868. Signed on page 2. Letter is written on State of Mainestationary as Chamberlain was the Governor as the time. Also includes original mailing envelope. Chamberlain was an American college professor from the State of Maine, who volunteered during the American Civil War to join the Union Army. Hebecame a highly respected and decorated Union officer, reaching the rank of brigadier general. He is most well known for his gallantry at the Battle of Gettysburg, which earned him the Medal of Honor.

Lincoln Assassination Deathbed Relic & Hair Sample

Lot #115 (Sale Order 116 of 590)

11" x 14" matted display containing three relics associated with the Lincoln assassination: (1) approximately ten 1/2" clippings or snippets of Lincoln's hair, (2) a 1/2" x 5/8" section of the deathbed sheet, (3) around 20 snippets of hairfrom William Seward. The three relics are housed behind domed lenses which magnify them. The linen relic was part of the Charles K. Tuckerman Papers sold by autograph dealer Mary A. Benjamin (a copy of her Letter of Provenance is included along with a color photocopy of the original section of blood-stained linen and the corresponding documentation). It was subsequently sold by Alexander Autographs. The hair samples were collected in 1865 by Mrs. Caroline Wright, wife of Indiana Governor Joseph A. Wright. They were sold by Christie's in 1992 and again in 2002 (Forbes Collection lot #121). A "Certificate of Authenticity" from Cary Delery of the Historical Shop in Metairie, Louisiana, related to all threerelics, is included.

Directly from the authors descendants, the letter written on Titanic Stationary with the raised White Star Line Flag and proper watermarks on the paper. The contents written on 2 1/2 pages is dated April13th 1912 and states "My Dear Mother,We had good weather in London. It is quite green and nice in England now. This boat is a giant in size and fitted up like a palacial hotel. The food and music is excellent and so far we have had very good weather. If all goes well we will arrive in New York Wednesday A.M. I am sending you a post card of the ship and also a book of postcards showing the inside. We have not had any news since we left New York Jan. 6th so we do not know what has been going on since we left. Mates sister was ill when we left and had an operation performed one week we sailed out of New York. Recovered Andrea Doria Genova Life Ring

Lot consists of an Original life preserver ring recovered from the wreckage of the Ocean Liner "Andrea Doria" of the Italian Line, where the home port was Genoa, Italy. On July 25, 1956 as the Andrea Doria was approaching the coast ofNantucket, Massachusetts heading for New York City when it collided with the "MS Stockholm" of the Swedish American Line and became one of history's most infamous maritime disasters. This life ring was recovered the day after by Alan Ades, who wasa Navigator and Operations Officer aboard the US Coast Guard Cutter Yakutat WAVP 380. Included is a typed signed letter from Mr. Ades. The ring is approx. 30" diameter, painted in red and white with rope affixed to the circumference, andstenciled with "Andrea Doria / Genova" in black. Show normal wear throughout. Excellent piece of maritime history.

Lot consists of a Rare, "SS Normandie" glass clock, French, 1935 produced with the collaboration of Lalique and Leon Hatot rom the ATO clock company. This pale blue tinted moulded clock is one of a few that were only given tofirst class passengers on the inaugurial Transatlantic voyage. The letters "NORMANDIE" spell out 9 of the clock face numbers, the ATO and company logo Compagnie Generale Transatlantique are to the rear in moulded lettering. Approx.5-3/4" tall x 5-1/4" diameter. The hands are made of tin and show light wear. The hour hand is loose and needs adjustment. The windup clock mechanism is working. Light scuffs, no cracks, chips, or repairs to the glass.

Franz Frohse, of the University of Berlin, created a series of anatomical drawings which, because of their accuracy and clarity, were quickly adopted for instruction inthis country. Commerce was interrupted at the outbreak of World War I, and these German illustrations, much in demand for medical instruction, were reproduced in the United States by A.J. Nystrom Co. Chicago.
