The Hoosier Schoolmaster by Edward Eggleston (1899) Description of Early Days in Indiana

Lot #11 (Sale Order 11 of 56)

The Hoosier Schoolmaster by Edward Eggleston, Published by Grosset & Dunlap, New York (1899) Hardcover, good condition with no dust jacket. 12mo - over 6¾ - 7¾" tall. The Hoosier Schoolmaster a was a popular novel not only for it's conventional plot of all turning out well (romance, poor orphans becoming wealthy, and the evil ones receiving just punishment with mitigation) , but also for its description of early days in Indiana. The country school is pictured as a constant warfare between master and the big boys (taken from his brother's actual experiences as a school teacher) , the community spelling school, different forms of bigoted and illiterate preaching offered to new settlers, and amusing attempts at formality in the proceedings of the courts.
