Flintlock Trade Pistol Flintlock Trade Pistol

Flintlock Trade Pistol

Lot #1 (Sale Order 1 of 498)

.69 caliber, 9.75" round barrel, iron furniture, walnut stock. 4.75" flat bevelled lock with teat at rear, removable faceted, fenced, iron pan with bridle, flat reinforced cock. Flat iron S-shaped side plate, double strapped iron barrel band at muzzle, iron triggerguard and butt cap. Semi-tulip head iron ramrod. A .75" 9-petal flower is neatly carved in the stock, forward of the triggerguard. An attractive and untouched early trade pistol.

Condition: Good overall with a deeply oxidize brown patina showing scattered surface roughness, some pinpricking and pitting. Lock functional, but mainspring is very weak, suggesting it may be cracked. Lock appears to be in original flintlock configuration. Stock with bumps and dings, scattered mars and a couple of old grain cracks. A nice early trade gun with that fresh "out of the attic appearance."

1st Battalion Ranger Knife, Large Variant 1st Battalion Ranger Knife, Large Variant

1st Battalion Ranger Knife, Large Variant

Lot #135 (Sale Order 132 of 498)

9.25 in. long clip point blade with 2.75 in. false edge, 14.25 in. in overall length with cast brass knuckle knife hilt, and teeth or cogs cast into the guard.

While long ago identified as the "1st Battalion Ranger" knife in Harold Peterson's American Knives, these brass-knuckled fighting knives have been subsequently identified as being the product of Australia, and saw service in the Pacific Theater during WWII. These knives were produced in a "small" and a "large" variant, with nominally 6.25 in. and 9.25 in. blades respectively. It is generally believed that while some of these knives saw combat use as private purchase weapons, the majority of the extant examples probably came home as souvenirs. These impressive looking fighting knives are an essential part of any collection of WWII theater and fighting knives. This is the larger version, which is somewhat easier to find than the smaller variant.

Provenance: Property of N. Flayderman & Co.

Condition: About very good overall. Blade has a medium pewter patina with some scattered oxidation and surface discoloration, and some light sharpening. The tip is slightly worn and dinged. The cast brass hilt has an uncleaned, deep bronze patina and shows some flaws as well as some brass flow down onto the blade at the ricasso. Obvious hand-finishing file marks are present inside the cogs and the grip of the knife. While these knives have been reproduced for the collector market over the last few decades, this one is 100% correct and authentic and shows some real use. A nice example of a scarce, and fierce-looking, Pacific Theater knuckle knife from World War II.

Lot #136 (Sale Order 133 of 498)

6.31 in. long clip point blade with 2.5 in. false edge, 10.25 in. in overall length with cast brass knuckle knife hilt, with teeth or cogs cast into the guard.

This is the much scarcer "small" variant of the "1st Battalion Ranger" fighting knife, which appears on the market much less frequently than its larger cousin (See also Lot 135).

Historic Operation Overlord World War II P.T. Boat 520 Battle Flag, Log Book and Photographs

Lot #203 (Sale Order 200 of 498)

Serving in the European Theater of World War Two from June to November 1944, PT-520 participated in numerous actions against German sea and air forces in the English Channel and coast of France.  This flag was present during its participation in Operation Overlord, where it was assigned to the “Mason Line”, a net of defensive measures on the western flank of the invasion preventing the attack of German ships.  PT-250 was stationed two to three miles from Omaha and Utah areas, sweeping for mines and performing search and rescue operations.  After the success of the invasion, PT-520 continued to operate along the French coast, rescuing downed pilots, fending off aerial raids and engaging German minesweepers and fast attack craft.  The log states that during its operational career, the vessel sunk two R-Boats, two E-Boats, and one "T.L.C."

The flag was used by PT-520 until August 25, when it was removed due to both it and the radio antenna suffering damage from a direct hit on the craft’s starboard side by a 40mm explosive shell during an engagement against a German convoy escorted by minesweepers.  It was removed by several sailors, including Coxwain James Marcantonio, who kept it as a memento along with a copy of the ship’s log book, which details the activities on board the vessel during its term of service.

The log covers November 1943-December 1944, detailing not only Marcantonio's career, but the daily activities of the craft, including passengers, targets engaged, damage reports and other notes of military importance.  A typed transcript is included, with additional commentary and clarification of events by Marcantonio.

Lot includes 34"x52" flag, copy of log book, transcript of log book with commentary, copies of discharge papers, and photographs of PT-520 and its crew.  Also includes notarized affidavit of authenticity.

Condition: Flag has some fading and stains.
