Pair of Tongue & Groove Planes by the Governor of Wisconsin, ca. 1840s Lot #535 (Sale Order 487 of 553) Matched pair of 9?" beech tongue-&-groove molding planes bearing the maker's mark of a man who would become Wisconsin?s second Governor. Planes are marked on the heel as being sized for use on "6/8" stock. Stamped on the toe of each is LJ FARWELL & CO / MILWAUKIE WT (notice the early spelling of Milwaukee and the abbreviation for ?Wisconsin Territory?). Wisconsin Territory was created by Congress in 1836, and it became a state in 1848, so the planes were made between those years. From "A Guide to the Makers of American Wooden Planes" (Pollak) we learn that??Leonard J. Farwell (b. 1819 in NY state, and orphaned by age 11) was a hardware dealer in Milwaukie (old spelling), W.T. (Wisconsin Territory), 1840-51. In 1841 he was a partner in Cady & Farwell and in 1843 in Clark, Shepardson, and then as L.J. Farwell & Co., becoming the largest wholesale and retail hardware company in the city. Earlier, before relocating to ?Milwaukie? he operated a tinsmith shop and hardware company in Lockport, IL, and subsequently became the second Governor of the State of Wisconsin in 1851.? That text doesn?t provide an example of the plane stamp, probably because (from another online resource)? ?There are few artifacts to be found from this business venture. One wood working plane is known to be marked for this firm and a few pieces of stoneware are known?? Here is another pair of examples, and you set their price by bidding. Of interest to the buyer of these planes, L.J Farwell also served as principal examiner of the U.S. Patent Office in Washington for 7 years, and was present in Ford's Theatre when Lincoln was assassinated, and he is the one who informed the VP of the assassination. Condition of the planes' beech wood is Good, with minor soiling and a few age checks on the heel & toe, but the iron parts of the plane (cutters, skate, & screws) are quite rusty, yet not beyond salvation. Good? condition because of the rust.
