Comments: Kammer and Reinhardt, circa 1917, a rare variation of their beloved "Mein Liebling" (my darling) model that reflected the changing fashions of the times. Value Points: most endearing little child with well-functioning flirty eyes, fine matte bisque, original body, body finish, wig, and wearing wonderful antique costume and accessories.

Condition: generally excellent, light retouch to body finish. Marks: 2033 BSW (in heart) 537 5. Comments: Bruno Schmidt, the model known as "Wendy", circa 1912. The model became known as "Wendy" after it appeared on the cover of an early doll book, Wendy and Friends by Madelaine Selfridge. The doll was acquired by Madame X of Texas from a Theriault auction of 1979 and bears a Gold Horse tag from that auction. Value Points: especially beautiful model with distinctive sculpting, especially of nose and mouth.

French Sevres Porcelain Jardiniere with Singing Bird and Butterfly by Bontems 7500/9500

The gold and ebony-rimmed Sevres porcelain jardiniere, which is exquisitely hand-painted with a very colorful flowers and a multi-colored bird, has porcelain lion head grips and brass ring handles, is filled with a luxurious arrangement of colorful silk flowers, berries, and leaves. Perched atop the arrangement is a feathered blue bird, while a butterfly is hidden in the leaves. When wound, the bird turns its head side to side, flits its tail feathers, and merrily chirps while opening and closing its mouth. Meanwhile a butterfly, hidden in the leaves, flutters back and forth. Condition: generally excellent, mechanism functions well. Comments: Bontems, Paris, 1880. Value Points: superb example of Bontems' felicitous presentation of most realistic nature sounds and movements is enhanced by the fine luxurious French porcelain work of Sevres.

Extremely Rare French Pistolet a Oiseau Chanteur by Bontems 27,000/38,000

9" (23 cm.) A very heavy cast brass and bronze pistol with faux-leather grip cover ornamented by elaborate cast brass floral and garland appliques disguises a very special secret. When wound, and trigger pulled, a beautiful feathered bird emerges. The original key is included as well as a brass perch upon which the pistol rests for display. Condition: generally excellent. Comments: Bontems, circa 1900, the imaginative and creative designs of Lucien Bontems are evident, not only in the more classic bird cages, but also in decorative works such as the jardiniere shown in the previous page, and in this extraordinary statement work, the Pistolet a Oiseau Chanteur (the singing bird pistol). The 2001 book, Flights of Fancy, by Sharon and Christian Bailly, note that two examples were sold to the Geneva firms of Bremond and S. Troll in 1905; the Bremond pistolet a oiseau chanteur was a cost of 400 francs. Value Points: extraordinary state of preservation, the mechanism functioning well, and the casework superb; only two other examples of this extremely rare piece are known to exist, one in Siegfried (Wendel) Mechanisches Musikkabinett in Ruedesheim, Germany and the other in the Kyoto Arishiyama Orgel Museum in Kyoto, Japan.

Kewpie has side-glancing large eyes, blue wings and a sculpted helmet and uniform with brown belt and boots; he carries a cane in his right arm, and his left arm is wrapped in a sling. The nurse in white uniform with Red Cross logo, matching cap, and blue apron has her arm around his back in support. Condition: generally excellent, imperceptible re-attachment of finial to helmet. Bisque swivel head with flat-cut neck on corresponding bisque shoulderplate, cobalt blue glass inset eyes, dark eyeliner, delicately-painted lashes and brows, accented nostrils, closed mouth excepting a very small opening between the outlined lips, pierced ears, early blonde human hair with interwoven braids and coronet, kid poupee body with gusset-jointing, stitched and separated fingers, lovely antique silk costume. The shoulderplate is decorated with a splendidly painted gold necklace that is comprised of an elaborate gold chain with interspersed gilt circles serving as frames for the glass domed Stanhope images within. The head is designed with a semi-circular cut-out at the back of the head, an oval cut-out at the back shoulderplate and the tiny mouth opening, all designed for illumination when viewing the Stanhope images. Condition: generally excellent. Comments: Antoine Edmund Rochard, circa 1868. Value Points: this example, a grand 30", is superbly preserved, retaining 24 of the original 28 micro-photographs including the Pavillon d'Orleans at Fontainbleau, Vue Generale de la Louvre, the Port of Havre, Ste Chapelle, Hotel de Ville of Paris, Etablissement Thermal, Bassin du Commerce Theatres, St. Jean Baptiste, and notably, an image titled Le Vengeur which may be a coded reference to a journal, Le Vengeur, which appeared in Paris during the 1870 uprising. As an historical dimensional document in doll, photography, and social history, the doll is immensely important. As a work of art, the doll is, in a word, splendid. Historical Background: Rochard, born in 1836 in Paris, the godson of jewelry maker, Barthelemy Legentil with whom he likely apprenticed, was intrigued, not only by jewelry design, but also by micro-photography. In 1868 he deposed a design concerning a system for placing Stanhopes (micro-photographs) in the breastplate and throat of a doll. His logic was simple: the tiny, tiny micro-photographs (about 1-1.4 mm) were to be incorporated with an optical viewing lens which magnified the image about 160 times, making them visible when held closely to the eye. The system was inventive (possibly spurred by the creative fever that swept France during the 1867 International Exposition), but also very costly and time-laborious, and likely the victim of the 1870 Franco-Prussian war and ensuing revolution which devastated Paris. Whatever the reason, or just the simple fact that, once a doll was assembled with a body, light could not enter the shoulderplate and the views could not be seen, few examples of the doll were ever made, accounting for its extreme rarity.

Value Points: in pristine condition including body and wig, the lady wears an exceptional original fashionable gown of lavender and ivory silk with applique flowers and bows, matching cap designed to fit to her chignon at the back of head, undergarments, shoes and socks.

Posed pridefully upon a velvet covered wooden platform is a bisque-headed man with highly characterized features, oval-shaped face with prominent chin and nose, brilliant blue paperweight eyes, nearly-closed mouth arranged in a haughty amused smile, fringed lashes, painted brows, original blonde mohair wig designed as 18th century periwig, cork pate, slender carton torso and legs, bisque forearms with curled fingers. Condition: generally excellent, mechanism and music function well except internal smoking tubes need restoration. Marks: N (script,head) LB (key) (original music tune label on base indicates two songs). Comments: Leopold Lambert, with commissioned bisque head likely by Jumeau, circa 1890; when wound, music plays and he alternately lifts his cigarette holder to his mouth, tilts his head backward as though exhaling, then lifts his lace-edged handkerchief as he turns his head toward it. Value Points: charming lean-bodied gentleman, in original Marquis costume, is especially notable for his unique facial modeling which has not been found on any other automaton or doll.

Posed in front of her lavishly-fitted dressing table with ormolu-capped richly-draped lace curtains is a bisque-head lady with blue glass enamel eyes, delicately-painted lashes and brows, closed mouth with accent lines, pierced ears, elongated blonde mohair wig in original ringlet curls, bisque shoulderplate, carton torso and legs, wire upper arms, bisque forearms and wearing an original very luxurious silk gown with embroidered flowers, undergarments, and silk shoes. The dressing table is laden with various toiletries and accessories and she holds a powder puff in one hand and a mirror in the other. Condition: generally excellent, mechanism functions well. Marks: (original two-tune label under table). Comments: Vichy, circa 1865. When wound and lever released, the lady lifts her head, turning side to side as though admiring herself, alternately powdering her nose and gazing into the hand mirror, while leaning forward which consequently emphasizes the embroidered detail of her gown; all the while music plays. Value Points: the luxury origin of the very rare automaton is emphasized not only by the intricate and realistic movements and music, but also by the extraordinary details of her costume and coiffure.

The lady sits behind an elaborate wooden spinning wheel holding a distaff wrapped with flax and ribbon, her foot rests upon the wooden pedal, and a metal rod attaches the spinning wheel to her torso. When wound, music plays, she turns her head and nods, blinks her eyes, and her bosom heaves up and down as she pumps the pedal of the the spinning wheel, and the spinning wheel turns appearing to spin the flax. Condition: generally excellent, some retouch on face and hands, mechanism and music function well. Comments: Gustav Vichy, circa 1885, the automaton was featured in their catalog as "Fileuse" (Spinner), #457, noted as a deposed model G.V. and described as "paysanne Louis XVI" (peasant of the Louis XVI era). Value Points: rare deposed model, with six movements, two musical tunes, of which no other model is known to exist.

Pressed bisque socket head with very plump cheeks and throat, small blue glass inset eyes with darker blue rims, thick dark eyeliner, painted lashes, mauve-blushed eyeshadow, brushstroked and feathered brows, accented nostrils, closed mouth with outlined lips, pierced ears, brunette human hair wig over cork pate, gutta percha body with dowel-jointing at shoulders, elbows, hips and knees, swivel wrists. Condition: generally excellent, bisque is flawless, body has some typical gutta percha restoration but is quite sturdy. Comments: Huret, late 1870s, this particular gutta-percha-bodied bebe presumes a very specific moment of history, positioned between the end of Huret's gutta percha-bodied poupee (about 1875/1880) and the beginning of Huret's wooden-bodied bebe (about 1880). It may rightly be considered the very first of the Huret bebes, and it is not likely to have been made for more than one or two years in extremely limited numbers; only one or two other examples are known to exist. Its specific size is notable: although the doll is the exact height (18") of the earlier Huret poupee, its proportions are that of a child (9 1/2" head circumference,10" waist, 12" hips, and with legs that are scaled to the size of the torso exactly like a child's body would be). Value Points: extremely rare bebe, her rarity rivaled by beautifully modeled distinctive features, very fine quality of bisque and painting, original body, and wearing early costume which may be original.

Rare French Musical Automaton "Marchande de Masques" by Gustave Vichy 30,000/40,000

36" (91 cm.) A slender-featured refined lady with paper mache head accentuated by well-defined high cheek bones and aquiline nose, has a rich oil-painted amber-tinted complexion and facial features, brown glass eyes with dreamy expression achieved by heavy articulated eyelids, open mouth with row of teeth, and original black human hair with defined widow's peak. Over her carton torso she is wearing an original embroidered silk kimono costume with rich embroidery including a large and elegant crane, various under-layers, sash, and silk slippers, and she carries a very large wooden handled paper parasol, a paper mache mask in her hand, and a lacquered tray on which are displayed other paper mache masks that she presents for sale. The movements are intricate: the lady pivots her head, raising and lowering her eyelids, while gracefully twirling the parasol between her fingers and occasionally lifting a mask as though to offer it to passers-by. There are two tunes that accompany the music. Condition: generally excellent, tray and masks are excellent albeit not original, music and motions function perfectly. Comments: Gustave Vichy, Paris, circa 1889, the model was presented in the Vichy catalog as model #448 named "Marchande de Masques" although commonly known as the Japanese Lady Mask Seller. The roof hinges up to reveal the fitted interior, also for use as a treasure box. He is standing in dramatic pose, his legs braced, his torso leaning backward, while holding a mandolin in his arm. Dressed in a foppish manner in gold and black satin with lace trim, jewelry and matching bicorn hat, he is holding a cigarette holder in his right hand, and a ribbon-wrapped cane in his left. When wound, music plays and he turns his head and nods in an elaborate manner, drawing the cigarette holder to his mouth as though to inhale. Condition: generally excellent, music and mechanisms function well except the smoking system does not work. Marks: Depose Tete Jumeau Bte SGDG 2 (head). L. Comments: Leopold Lambert, circa 1890, the dashing gentleman is presented as a 19th century re-creation of "L'Incroyable", a fashionable aristocratic movement of the late 18th century in which rebellious young men appeared in highly exaggerated and outrageous costume. Known as Les Incroyables (the incredible ones), the name came to signify the entire rebellious movement of the time.

Poured honey-colored wax shoulder heads of two highly characterized young boys, one with laughing expression, the other crying, each with narrow enamel eyes, open mouth with tiny teeth and brunette mohair wig, straw-filled muslin body, poured wax lower arms, hands, and feet with well defined posing of arms and hands, and each wearing its original brown woolen suit with silver buttons. Condition: generally excellent, one baby finger tip chipped. Comments: probably French, mid-19th century, the figures depict "Jean Qui Rit" (John who laughs) and "Jean Qui Pleure" (John who cries) based on the illustrations in the French children's novel by Comtesse de Segur. So popular were the figures that they were produced in many forms including dolls as these, bisque or bronze figurines and other novelties, and even as the crying boy in the Vichy automaton of "Little Schoolboy in Dunce Cap". Condition: generally excellent, fresh and sturdy original body. Comments: French, circa 1865, attributed to Blampoix. This poupee, along with following lot #200, have been recently discovered in the attic rooms of a chateau near Dijon, France in the Bourgogne region; both dolls were stored in an original old wooden trunk box along with their trousseaux and accessories. The trunk, which is included with this doll #199, has the trunk label of Baldomme, Bazar Central of Dijon, as well as a the handwritten note indicating its original owner, Madame Richard Guillemot (partially illegible). Value Points: an important trousseau doll, increasingly impossible to find in this original state of preservation, is enhanced by her beautiful face and fine condition. Her trousseau includes five gowns (shown here, one with very separate rare overlay open weave jacket, and one with separate embroidered lace wrap; one with matching bonnet) along with three additional bonnets, wooden hat box, early woven shoes, parasol, lambswool muff, lace shawl, gloves, white pique jacket, cream cashmere cape, and extensive undergarments.

The busts were sculpted by Franz Iffland, Berlin sculptor in the late 19th century, and cast in the important German foundry of Gladenbeck; the foundry was known for producing very high quality bronze castings. When wound, the lid pops open, the little bisque head emerges, turns from side to side, and moves her arms as though blowing kisses. Condition: generally excellent, mechanism functions well. Comments: Roullet et Decamps, circa 1890, the popular themed automaton was made in a variety of styles including a doll emerging from a tree trunk, a brioche, a basket, or, as this case, a petaled flower. Arranged on an oval base under a glass dome is a fantasy vignette in which a snow-speckled lamb is pulling a little sleigh seat which is resting upon wooden skiis; a bisque head doll with large blue glass eyes is seated on the sleigh, costumed in rose winter coat with white fur trim and muff. A castle scene is in the background, and the scene is accented with branches and leaves. On the underside of the base is a music box which keywinds at the back. The scene is in excellent condition, the music box needs repair. Comments: Late 19th century.

Seated upon a high-back wooden chair is a paper mache elderly woman with incised wrinkles, brown glass eyes, leather eyelids, sculpted brows, hinged jaw, row of porcelain teeth, grey hair, wire spectacles, carton torso and legs in seated pose, wire upper arms, paper mache hands, holding her knitting needles in hands. When wound, she moves her arms and hands in a realistic knitting movement, her eyelids open and close while jaw hinges open as though speaking. Condition: original painted finish and costume, albeit costume faded, some paper mache separations at sides of head, mechanism functions well. Comments: French, Roullet et Decamps, circa 1900. The automaton appeared in an early Roullet et Decamps catalog named "Vielle Tricoteuse, No. 265". Value Points: the very characterized facial model enhances the charming homey scene.

Standing upon a circular platform, which contains musical and clockwork mechanisms, is a tall handsome man, having paper mache head, blue glass eyes, leather eyelids, hinged jaw, two rows of teeth and modeled tongue visible when mouth opens, blonde mohair wig, curly moustache and beard, carton torso and leg, wire upper arms, paper mache lower arms and hands. The man is formally dressed in black suit with silk lapels and hankie, shirt with bow tie and stick pin, painted black shoes, and is holding a folio in his hand. When wound, music plays, and he turns and nods his head, slightly blinks his eyes, opens and closes his mouth as though singing, and gestures dramatically with his hands. Condition: generally excellent, hands professionally repainted, eyelids need smoothing, but overall music and mechanism function well. Comments: Phalibois, late 1890s, the gentlemen depicts Maestro performing at the Opera. Value Points: rare model of automaton in captivating performance.
