And 3rd Infantry Division-Sgt. 1st Class Lot #88 (Sale Order 97 of 257) Patch configuration makes sense…The 5th Army was activated in The French Morocco in 1943 and was responsible for the planning of the invasion of mainland Italy. During the battle of Cisterna the 3rd Ranger Bn. Serving under the 6615th Ranger Force and the 3rd Infantry Division were both involved. The 3rd Ranger Battalion was decimated. M1912 WWI USMC Summer Weight Tunic With 2nd Div. 2nd Battalion/9th Regiment Patch Lot #121 (Sale Order 131 of 257) Summer weight is in excellent condition having minor staining in places. One shoulder strap button is dented. Rare WW1 period theater made shoulder patch with bullion accent border. Shape and background color indicates this patch was worn by the 2nd Division 2nd Battalion/9th regiment. The USMC style wool Sgt. rank stripes have been heavily attacked by moths. There is a WW1 victory medal on the left breast with a "Champagne-Marne" campaign clasp, a 2 place ribbon bar with 3 battle stars and a WW1 7th pattern French Valor-Discipline Medal with ribbon being sewn to the tunic. That being said...This is what we came up while researching the 2nd Bn/9th Marines.."With the advent of World War I, the United States expanded the Armed Forces, to include the United States Marine Corps. The 2nd Battalion, 9th Marines (also known as 2/9) was created and activated on November 20, 1917, at Quantico, Virginia. During this period, there was turmoil in Cuba's sugar producing regions. American companies operated the island's sugar industry, which was vital to the economy of the United States. The battalion's first mission was to keep order in the island and once this was accomplished, it was reassigned. There were rumors that German agents were going to disrupt Mexican oil shipments to Texas. The battalion was sent to Texas to safeguard these shipments. 2/9 was disbanded after the war on April 25, 1919, only to be reactivated in 1925. The battalion's main objective was to train reserve Marines and its headquarters was now transferred to Kansas City, Missouri, with two companies stationed at St. Louis. 2/9 was once again disbanded in 1937." Does this mean the medals and/or the rare shoulder patch are incorrect..? Did some contingency of the USMC 2/9 fight in Europe? The patch itself is a very scarce item...Offered for auction fresh out of a 60+ year WW1 collection!
