Original Painting of Hitler by Heinrich Knirr Original Painting of Hitler by Heinrich Knirr

Original Painting of Hitler by Heinrich Knirr

Lot #54 (Sale Order 5 of 167)

This historical painting by Heinrich Knirr, referred to as “Hitler’s official painter”, was meticulously restored in 2004 by Barry Bauman of the Barry Bauman Conservation. The painting measures 87 ¾” high and 57 1/4” wide and depicts Hitler in life size although Hitler was 5’ 8” and the painting portrays him as 6’ 2”. The painting was donated to a museum in 2003 and restored in 2004 where it has been hanging ever since. There is no known documentation on how the painting was saved or made it to the US but a story suggests that the portrait was liberated by one of the first American soldiers to enter Munich, Germany, in the spring of 1945. The soldier intercepted two Czechoslovakian men running down a street carrying a large object, which turned out to be the painting of Hitler. The painting had remained in a closet for 50 years before being donated to the museum. It was believed that Hitler only sat for one painter, Heinrich Knirr and that Knirr painted 5 portraits of him with 4 being from photographs and one from an actual sitting. This rare piece of history is the only known full size painting of Hitler by Heinrich Knirr and has never been offered to the market before. Please note that the lines seen in the pictures are reflections from the plexiglass protective case. The painting wasn’t removed for pictures. The painting is located in Indiana and will ship from that location. Buyer is responsible for all packing and shipping. To view the detailed work of Barry Bauman during the restoration process visit http://www.baumanconservation.com/WWIITableofContents.html . This site contains a complete and detailed history of the painting, artist and restoration.

WW2 German M35 SS Helmet WW2 German M35 SS Helmet

WW2 German M35 SS Helmet

Lot #213 (Sale Order 54 of 167)

WW2 German M35 SS helmet. The Schutzstaffel, abbreviated SS was a major Nazi organization under Adolf Hitler and the Nazi Party. The SS grew from a small paramilitary unit to a powerful force that served as the Führer's "Praetorian Guard," the Nazi Party's "Shield Squadron" and a force that, fielding almost a million men (both on the front lines and as political police), managed to exert as much political influence as the Wehrmacht. Built upon the Nazi ideology, the SS, under Heinrich Himmler's command, was responsible for many of the crimes against humanity perpetrated by the Nazis during World War II, and most of the worst of those crimes. This is a WWII German SS Double Decal helmet. An M-35 style helmet with the rolled rim. The sticker in one side is of the SS insignia. The other side would bear the swastika on a red background. The swastika is missing, but you can see the outline of where the sticker once was. The helmet is missing the original leather liner, but the aluminum ring frame is still in place. The wear on top of the helmet is typical of the damage derived from placing it upside down on the ground. Made of steel construction. Rolled edges. The air vent is integrated. Black color. Helmet is stamped S2447 on the back of the neck guard. There is also a second number stamp that looks like 099.

WW2 Imperial Japanese Army Type 30 Training Bayone WW2 Imperial Japanese Army Type 30 Training Bayone

WW2 Imperial Japanese Army Type 30 Training Bayone

Lot #225 (Sale Order 66 of 167)

It was employed by the Japanese armed forces as a training prop. The edge was not sharpened. This would reduce the chances of a recruit getting cut during practice. The size of bayonet is identical to the regulation one. The Japanese soldier trained heavily on hand to hand combat. This was part of the tradition of the Samurai warrior. Many of these bayonets were melted in the later years of the war due to the metal shortage in Japan. That is one of the reasons why these items are hard to find. The Japanese bayonets were commonly marked with the manufacturer's logo. This particular example has been marked with Kokura manufacturing logo just above the hilt. There is also a number stamped on the very bottom of the hilt which reads 79831. The bayonet featured here has a wooden handle construction and metal scabbard. One side of the handguard is curved by design. The blade is single edge. It has a blood groove that extends most of the length of the blade. The blade measures approx. 15.5"L.

WW2 Japanese Good Luck WW2 Japanese Good Luck

WW2 Japanese Good Luck "yosegaki hinomaru" Flag

Lot #227 (Sale Order 68 of 167)

The Good Luck Flag, known as yosegaki hinomaru in the Japanese, was a traditional gift for Japanese servicemen deployed during the military campaigns of the Empire of Japan, though most notably during World War 2. The flag given to a soldier was a national flag signed by friends and family, often with short messages wishing the soldier victory, safety, and good luck. The Japanese call their country's flag hinomaru, which translates literally to "sun's circle", referencing the red circle on a white field. When the hinomaru was signed, the Japanese characters were usually written vertically, and radiated outward from the edge of the red circle. This practice is referenced in the second term, yosegaki, meaning "sideways-writing". The phrase hinomaru-yosegaki can be interpreted as "To write sideways around the red sun", describing the appearance of the signed flag. Normally, some kind of exhortation such as Bu un Chou kyu is written across the top within the white field. Loosely translated into English, Bu un Chou kyu means "May your military fortunes be long lasting." Dark, medium-sized characters may normally be seen that run vertically down the right or left hand margin of the flag. These usually occur in one, two or three columns and are generally the names of the man receiving the flag, and the name of the individual or organization presenting the gift to him. The kanji characters were typically written with a calligraphy brush and ink. While it was normally the custom to sign only around the red center of the flag, some examples may be found with characters written upon the red center as well. For the military man stationed far away from home and loved ones, the hinomaru yosegaki offered communal hopes and prayers to the owner every time the flag was unfolded. It was believed that the flag, with its many signatures and slogans would provide a combined force or power to see its owner through tough times. Furthermore, it reminded him in a material way to do his duty. The performance of that duty meant that the warrior was not expected to return home from battle. Often, the departing serviceman left clipped fingernails and hair behind so that his relatives would have something of him in which to hold a funeral. Great honor was brought upon the family of those whose sons, husbands, brothers, and fathers died in the service of country and Emperor. The belief of self-sacrifice was a central one within Japanese culture and was much exalted during World War 2.

WWI US Army Doughboy Helmet Rough Textured Paint WWI US Army Doughboy Helmet Rough Textured Paint

WWI US Army Doughboy Helmet Rough Textured Paint

Lot #229 (Sale Order 70 of 167)

US Army Doughboy helmet. As issued during WWI. The M1917 helmet was made of manganese steel with a fixed liner and leather chinstrap with sliding buckle. The leather/felt/netting liner had an integral suspension that separated the wearer's head from the steel dome but did not provide much comfort. The M1917 was painted lusterless olive drab, with a sawdust anti-reflective texture. Individual units permitted other color schemes, paint and markings, although drilling the helmet to attach insignia was prohibited after drilling was found to weaken it. The Brodie helmet is a steel combat helmet designed and patented in London in 1915 by John Leopold Brodie. In modified form it became the Helmet, steel, Mark I in Britain and the M1917 Helmet in the U.S. Colloquially, it was called the shrapnel helmet, Tommy helmet, tin hat, and in the United States the doughboy helmet. It was also known as the dishpan hat, tin pan hat, washbasin, battle bowler (when worn by officers), and Kelly helmet. The German Army called it the Salatschüssel (salad bowl). Stamped ZC193 on the rim of the hat.

WW1 German Pickelhaube Helmet WW1 German Pickelhaube Helmet

WW1 German Pickelhaube Helmet

Lot #230 (Sale Order 71 of 167)

The Pickelhaube (plural Pickelhauben; from the German Pickel, "point" or "pickaxe", and Haube, "bonnet", a general word for "headgear"), also Pickelhelm, was a spiked helmet worn in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries by German military, firefighters, and police. Although typically associated with the Prussian Army, which adopted it in 1842–43, the helmet was widely imitated by other armies during this period. Aside from the spike finial, perhaps the most recognizable feature of the Pickelhaube was the ornamental front plate, which denoted the regiment's province or state. This helmet is missing the front plate. The most common plate design consisted of a large, spread-winged eagle, the emblem used by Prussia. Different plate designs were used by Bavaria, Württemberg, Baden, and the other German states. All-metal versions of the Pickelhaube were worn mainly by cuirassiers, and often appear in portraits of high-ranking military and political figures.

Introduced in 1915, it was the first modern steel helmet and it served as the basic helmet of many armies well into the 1930s. Initially issued to infantry soldiers, in modified form they were also issued to cavalry and tank crews. WW2 US Army M1 Helmet, Liner, & Net

Lot #236 (Sale Order 77 of 167)

The M-1 is one of the most utilitarian designs produced for a U.S. helmet and one of the longest lasting. The M1 is two "one-size-fits-all" helmets—an outer metal shell, sometimes called the "steel pot", and a hard hat–type liner that is nestled inside the shell and contains the suspension system that would be adjusted to fit the wearer's head. Helmet covers and netting would be applied by covering the steel shell with the extra material tucked inside the shell and secured by inserting the liner. Many news reels and pictures show the GI's using their helmet to cook, dig, carry water and many other functions. Approximately 8 million helmets were produced during WW2 by a large number of companies. The outer shell cannot be worn by itself. The liner can be worn by itself providing protection similar to a hard hat.

US Military M7 Bayonet & M8A1 Sheath US Military M7 Bayonet & M8A1 Sheath

US Military M7 Bayonet & M8A1 Sheath

Lot #240 (Sale Order 81 of 167)

The M7 bayonet is a bayonet that was used by the U.S. military for the M16 rifle, it can also be used with the M4A1 carbine, Steyr AUG and the IMI Galil assault rifles and carbines, and Mossberg combat shotguns. It can be used as a fighting knife and utility tool. It was introduced in 1964, when the M16 entered service during the Vietnam War. The M7 was manufactured in the United States, Canada, West Germany, the Philippines, Singapore, Israel, South Korea and Australia. The M7 blade and hilt are very similar to the M4 bayonet with the Korean War era plastic grips for the M1/M2 carbines except that the M7 has a much larger muzzle ring. The M7 has the same two-lever locking mechanism as the M4, that connects to a lug on the M16 barrel. The blade and basic grip for the M7 is similar to the M6 (M14 rifle), M5 (M1 rifle), and M4 (M1/M2 carbine), all derived from the World War II M3 fighting knife. The M7 1095 carbon steel blade is 6 3/4 inches long, with an overall length of 11.9 inches. Blade width is 7/8 inch and it weighs about 9.6 ounces. One edge is sharpened the full length while the opposite side of the blade has approximately 3 inches sharpened. The non-slip grips are molded black plastic. The steel parts have a uniform dark grey/black parkerized finish.

WW2 US M1 MP Helmet

Lot #253 (Sale Order 94 of 167)

WW2 US M1 MP Helmet. This helmet is missing the inner liner. U.S. Army MP units have combat zone responsibilities in addition to their law enforcement duties. These responsibilities include mounted and dismounted patrols, response force operations, area damage control, route reconnaissance, cordon and search operations, and convoy and personnel escorts. Operationally, these duties fall under the "security and mobility support" discipline of the Military Police Corps.

WWI US Army Doughboy Helmet Rough Textured Paint WWI US Army Doughboy Helmet Rough Textured Paint

WWI US Army Doughboy Helmet Rough Textured Paint

Lot #277 (Sale Order 118 of 167)

48 Star Jack of The Untied States 48 Star Jack of The Untied States

48 Star Jack of The Untied States

Lot #286 (Sale Order 127 of 167)

The jack of the United States of America is a maritime flag representing United States nationality flown on the jack staff in the bow of American vessels that are moored or anchored. The U.S. Navy is a prime user of jacks for its warships and auxiliaries, but they are also used by ships of the U.S. Coast Guard, the predominantly civilian-manned replenishment and support ships of the U.S. Navy's Military Sealift Command, the ships of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, and other U.S. governmental entities. "The jack is flown on the bow (front) of a ship and the ensign is flown on the stern (rear) of a ship when anchored or moored. Once under way, the ensign is flown from the main mast." For most of U.S. history, the primary jack design has been the blue canton with stars (the "union") from the U.S. national ensign. The blue fielded, white-starred jack is referred to as the Union Jack, not to be confused with the Union Jack of Britain, which has the same name but a different design. Made during WW2 (U.S. involvement 1941-45) at Mare Island, California, Headquarters of the Pacific Fleet. A black stencil along the hoist on the reverse side reads as follows: "Union Jack No 9 MI 44"(meaning, United States ensign number 12, Mare Island, 1944). Measures approx. 35"H & 48"W.
