The rifle features a Berlin marked, 1909 Argentine Mauser action, re-chambered and re-barreled in the potent .338-06 caliber. The consignor had the work done in Tucson, AZ but could not recall the name of the gunsmith. The bolt handle has been replaced with a butter knife bolt and a barrel band swivel has been added. The smooth wood custom stock shows nice figure and finish with a beaded cheek piece. The butt ends with rubber Decelerator butt pad providing a 14 ½” LOP to the finely tuned trigger. The rifle has had a Harris bi-pod and nylon sling added. The rifle is topped with a German manufactured Zeiss Diatal fixed 6X scope with clear crisp optics. This rifle was purchased by the Kimball family who owned the 1st pharmacy in Riverside, California. It was sold to Frank Wright in the 1950’s who was also a pharmacist in Riverside along with loading tools and ammo purchased in the 19th century to hunt bear in nearby mountains. This rifle has been in only two collections since new. The rifle retains 50%-70% original blue on the barrel and magazine tube drifting to patina with minor pitting and erosion just starting. Finely engraved with gold and silver inlay by master engraver Frank Hendericks of Texas. A file of info from Hendericks accompanies this lot including drawings, receipts, correspondence and receipt of payments 1993 (Total cost $9,750 to Hendericks). The scrolls are intricate and fine with gold and silver work excellent. The grips are select walnut and excellent. The condition is excellent as refurbished at the time of engraving. Frank Hendricks was one of the top masters of the late 20th century and R.L. Wilson, Robert B. Berryman, Robert Lee and top Colt experts held his engraving in ultra-high regard (“However dealing with him was a bitch” John R. Gangel direct quote). A superbly engraved Colt by a real master. 18EN-159 COLT 1862 POCKET POLICE Lot #814 (Sale Order 108 of 553) Colt 1862 Police New Black Powder Series revolver in .36 caliber percussion with a 5 ½” barrel, S/N 49034. Fully and finely engraved with gold inlay by Lynton McKenzie. Letter signed to our consignor concerning this commission beginning in 1992 and erosion in 1994 when paid for (Thick file including copies of cashier’s check for engraving). A signed letter by McKenzie also accompanies the lot stating it was the first and only percussion engraved by him. He mentions inspiration from Lippold Navies and Sultan of Turkey Dragoon but he added the satin gray for contrast. Also he felt wolf’s head on the hammer to be “amateurish” and he preferred good clean lines. Lynton McKenzie was considered in the top master engravers of the 20th century and worked for Purdey among having been commissioned by the world’s top collectors. Lynton passed away shortly after completing the Colt. This pistol remains in excellent condition as refurbished at the time of engraving with blue, French gray or satin finish and gold gilt straps. The rifle is in good overall condition with a 32” barrel with a ramped blade front and military tangent style rear sights. The barrel retains a significant amount of its blue finish with the ramrod missing. The receiver retains the majority of its flaking nickel finish. The Receiver is marked Peabody Patent, Providence Tool Co., Providence, R.I. Manufactured for the Turks and used during the Russo-Turkish war of 1877-1878, over 600,000 of the rifles were built by the Providence Tool Co., which held the Peabody patent. The rifle has Turkish proofs forward the front ring. The smooth wood stock is in good condition with mars and compressions. The stock features several cartouches and ends with a smooth, steel butt plate. The bore is fair, the action crisp and markings are legible. The Turkish rifle was chambered in its own unique cartridge, the 11.3 x 59R or “.45 Turkish”. From the estate of Larry Gaertner. Est.: $350-$700. (Antique)

The pistol features vivid case colors on the hammer and trigger. The checkered wood medallion grips are in very good condition with small mars and compressions consistent with use. The bore is good, the action crisp and markings are sharp. The pistol includes a Smith and Wesson factory letter confirming all features and indicating shipment to W. Daisy produced a 22 caseless cartridge, designed in 1961, which was ignited by compressed air through a tiny hole in the back of the cartridge. The heat from the compressed air then ignited the propellant on the back of the bullet. The receiver shows significant flaking blue with the remainder going to grey patina. The trigger, hammer and lever have old, toning case hardening evident in the protected areas. The barrel has gone to a mottled grey patina with sharp edges and areas of light pinprick pitting. The cylinder is also a silver/grey patina with the majority of the cylinder scene still visible, the safety pins are flattened and the nipples are original. All visible serial numbers are matching with the exception of the wedge and rammer. The brass straps have taken on pleasing taffy colored patina. The action is tight and functions well at the time of description. The smooth wood grips are in good condition with three hash marks cut into the right panel.
