Springfield Model 1817 Flintlock Pistol

.69 caliber, 11.125" barrel, no S/N. Bright finish, walnut stock, iron mounts. Lock marked with a Spread-Winged Eagle over US forward of the cock and in three vertical lines at the tail of the lock: SPRING / FIELD / 1818 . Flat beveled lock with pronounced teat at rear, integral fenced iron pan and faceted swan-necked cock. Lock marked LD and B internally and with single punch dot mating marks on all small internal parts, as well as the cock, cock screw, top jaw, top jaw screws steel, steel screw and steel spring screw. Correct pattern curled toe steel (frizzen) and steel spring with pointed finial. Mainspring marked with three file slash mating marks that also appear on all major components and screw necks. Barrel retained by single double-strapped band with Wickham's improvement stud, with a brass blade front sight. Top of breech with P / [eagle head] / V proof marks and dated 1818 . Most small parts with two letter workman's initials as well as the mating marks, with PW inside the butt cap, EA on the triggerguard plate, JC in the triggerguard. Bottom of barrel marked EA as well as with an Arabic 2 and three file slashes, breech plug with matching mating marks. The same mating marks also appear in the backstrap cut out of the stock. Stock clearly marked with a pair of crisp script cartouches on the counterpane; an S for John Stebbins and an ET for Elisha Toby. A clear block RC stock maker's mark on lower front of grip. Includes swelled wood ramrod with iron ferrule threaded jag at end that appears to be original to the pistol. Production of these guns was initiated in 1807 but suspended when the official handgun caliber was reduced from .69 to .54. They were subsequently assembled circa 1817-1818 and are sometimes referred to as the Model 1807 due to their initial production beginning at that time. These are extremely rare US martial pistols both in terms of production numbers, of which was only 1,000 were produced, as well as production location. Only three major runs of handguns were produced at the Springfield Arsenal, the M1817 pistol, the M1855 Pistol Carbine and the M1911 semi-automatic pistol. This makes these especially desirable guns for Springfield collectors and this example would be extremely difficulty to upgrade.

Condition: Very fine. Remains in original flintlock configuration in all respects. Metal very lightly cleaned long ago with an even steel patina. All markings crisp and sharp in both metal and wood. Mechanically functional, very good bore with even oxidation. Stock with some scattered handling marks, minor bumps and dings. A very tiny chip is missing on the reverse at the top of the butt cap, and a extremely small repair is present on the left side at the tang mortise, but internal inspection suggests this may well have been arsenal done, as the barrel has certainly not been out of the stock in an extremely long time, and the methods suggest arsenal work. Overall one of the finest examples of these rare martial pistols to come to market in decades.

US Model 1822 Flintlock Musket by Springfield

.69 caliber, 42" barrel secured by three barrel bands, S/N W/a88 . National Armory brown finish, color case hardened lock with removable brass pan, smooth walnut stock. Lock marked with a [spread-winged eagle]/ US forward of the hammer and in three lines vertically at the tail of the lock SPRING/FIELD/1829 . Tang dated 1829 as well. Breech with depressed P proof over [eagle head]/ V . Serial numbered W/a 88 on top of breech, with bayonet mating code D35 on upper strap of top barrel band. Stock marked with two fine cartouches on counterpane; a script ET inspection and a script EB/3 reclassification mark from the 1840s. A fine JS final inspection cartouche is present behind the triggerguard. Lock remains in original flint configuration with perfect fit internally, matching V assembly marks on internal parts and hammer, inspection marks throughout. Tumbler, bridle, sear and internal screws all retain the majority of their original brilliant heat blued finish, with the frizzen spring retaining much of the blue as well, although duller and faded. Barrel is in original flint configuration as well with a complete unmolested touchhole that is correctly tapered and angled. Retains both original sling swivels as well as the original, full-length button head ramrod. Really a stunning example of a National Armory brown US M1822 (M1816 Type II) in an outstanding state of preservation that somehow escaped the percussion alteration program of the 1840s and 1850s.

Condition: Very fine. Retains most of the arsenal applied brown finish, with some flaking, scuffing and loss, particularly around the muzzle where the bayonet caused friction wear. Lock retains some muted case color with a dark blue-gray smoky color. All markings remain crisp and clear throughout. Lock is mechanically functional and very crisp. Bore is excellent and bright. Stock is very crisp with some feathery grain remaining, fine lines and crisp edges, showing only some scattered bumps, dings and mars from 189 years of handing and storage.

US Model 1863 Rifle Musket by Springfield

.58 caliber, 40" barrel with three barrel bands, no S/N. Bright barrel, color case hardened lock, blued barrel bands and sight. Lock with standard US SPRINGFIELD markings and eagle, dated 1863 at rear. Barrel with matching date on breech and standard V/P /[eaglehead] proofs. Counterpane with crisp script JG and ESA cartouches. Retains original straight-shank, tulip head ramrod and lower sling swivel, upper swivel missing.

Condition: Very good. Metal with some scattered surface oxidation and discoloration, lock with strong case color. All markings crisp and clear. Mechanically functional, very good bore is somewhat dirty. Stock with scattered handling marks, bumps and dings.

Remington Model 1863 Zouave Rifle With Original Saber Bayonet

.58 caliber, 33" barrel retained by two brass barrel bands, no S/N. Blued barrel, color case hardened lock, brass furniture. Standard Remington lock markings, dated 1863 . Barrel with matching date, usual V/P/ [eagle head] proofs and marked STEEL . Counterpane with two clear script cartouches, HDJ and BH . Retains both sling swivels, original ramrod and spare cone in patch box. Accompanied by a correct pattern original saber bayonet with correct brass-mounted leather scabbard.

Condition: Fine. Retains most of the blued finish on the barrel with the case color on the lock fading and dulling. Mechanically functional, very good 7-groove bore. Rear sight blade damaged and 300-yard leaf is missing. Wood with scattered bumps, dings and handling marks. Bayonet about fine with an uncleaned patina on the hilt and a bright blade. Scabbard very good, with mounts matching the patina of the hilt, leather with scuffs and mars.

Percussion Turner Style Rifle By W.L.Hudson

.40 caliber, 31" octagonal barrel with muzzle turned round for bullet starter, retained by a single wedge with hooked breech, no S/N. Browned finish, iron furniture, smooth, straight-gripped walnut half-stock with pewter forend cap. Back action percussion lock marked W.L. HUDSON/MAKER/CIN.O in a three-line cartouche with same marking on top barrel flat behind rear sight. Double set triggers, semi-pistol gripped triggerguard, adjustable tang mounted peep sight, buckhorn barrel rear sight, hooded post front sight. 3.25" long bayonet lug at muzzle, for attachment of a "Bahn Frei"-style saber bayonet. Wood ramrod with brass tip.

William Hudson was a Cincinnati based gun maker works cab1852-1864. This rifle conforms to the style known as "Turner Rifles," sporting arms that had been utilized by members of the various German-American Turnverein (Turner) clubs. These recent German immigrants to America volunteered in large numbers to fight during the American Civil War, often bringing their own target rifles with them when they enlisted. Many of the guns were modified with large bayonet lugs to accept the classic Turner "Bahn Frei" brass-handled saber bayonets. The 9th Ohio Volunteer Infantry, raised in the Cincinnati area, was one of the most storied of these German American regiments to fight during the war and this rifle is likely associated with a member of that unit.

Condition: Good. Retains some of the brown finish on the barrel, which is thinning and mixing with an oxidized patina and some scattered surface scale. Markings remain legible on barrel and lock. Lock not functioning correctly. Bore very good with some light oxidation. Barrel rear sight may be an old replacement. Stock solid with bumps and dings and some added finish.

Colt Model 1861 Special Rifle Musket

.58 caliber, 40" barrel retained by three barrel bands, no S/N. Bright finish, smooth walnut stock. Lock marked in three lines U.S./COLT'S PT F.A. Mfg Co/HARTFORD Ct and dated 1863 at tail. Breech with matching 1863 date, V/P/[eagle head] proofs and left flat marked STEEL and with inspector initials EF . Counterpane with two excellent DAP and JT cartouches, top of comb with clear MMJ sub-inspection. Small letter sub-inspections throughout on the metal parts. Correct 1861 pattern rear sight, musket front sight/bayonet lug. Correct straight-shank ramrod, sling swivels, added Enfield pattern cone protector. A really wonderful example of a mid-war produced US M1861 Special Model musket from one of the most iconic of US arms makers.

Condition: Very fine. Metal bright with some old dried oil and light discoloration, fine bore, mechanically excellent, all margins crisp and clear. Stock extremely crisp with a fine open grain and feathery texture, showing only a 1.75" scrape on the obverse butt at the butt plate and some very minor light handing marks.

Springfield Model 1855 Pistol Carbine

.62 caliber, 12" barrel, no S/N. Bright finish, brass furniture, walnut stock and detachable buttstock. Standard Springfield markings on lock, dated 1856 at tail. Standard proof marks on breech, dated 1855 on tang. Correct pattern folding L-shaped rear sight, swivel ramrod. Butt cap mating numbered 3 , buttstock mating numbered 16 . Sling swivels on barrel band and in toe of stock, sling ring in butt cap.

Condition: Good. Metal cleaned to bright with some light pitting, but all marks remain clear. Lock fully functional and complete, bore has been smooth-bored to about .62 caliber. Pistol stock with numerous handling marks and dings as well as a couple of cracks, the largest running from the front of the lock forward and then down and around to the triggerguard and another at the tail of the lock. No cartouche visible on counterpane. Buttstock very good with scattered bumps and dings.

32.25" single-edged spear point blade with 20" stopped median fuller. 5.25" hilt with pierced iron half-basket guard with a spread winged American eagle with the motto E Plurius Unum in ribbons above its head. Shagreen-wrapped grooved wood grips with 7 wraps of triple brass wire, the middle of the three ring twisted. Blade with frosty etched panels with a large US on the reverse with foliate bookends, and foliate scrolls near the ricasso. Reverse ricasso marked W CLAUBERG SOLINGEN in an oval around their logo. Obverse ricasso with brass "PROVED" disc and spine etched IRON PROOF . Obverse of blade with foliate scrolls near ricasso and a large spread-winged American Eagle central panel, again with the E Pluribus Unum cotton in ribbons. Iron backstrap of hilt engraved in two script lines: Presented to Lieut. K. D. Cheny / by Members Hartford City Guard 1866 . Includes correct pattern metal scabbard with two suspension rings. A search of both the Historical Data Systems and Fold3 databases could not locate a "K.D. Cheny." Further research may prove fruitful.

Condition: Fine. Blade retains much of the original bright polish and frosty etching with only some lightly scattered minor surface oxidation and flecks of discoloration. Blade with a couple of minor nicks along its edge. Hilt fine, grip with some light wear and tight wire. Scabbard very good.

US Model 1850 Staff Officer's Sword

31.25" slightly curved, single-edged blade with 22.5" stopped median fuller and narrow 22.5" fuller along spine. 5.5" gilt brass hilt with open work foliate patterns and cast US in guard. Pommel cap with brass spanner capstan nut. Leather covered grooved wood grip with 14 wraps of triple strand wire, the middle wire being coiled. Etched blade with foliate scrolls, patriotic and martial themes, E Pluribus Unum in a ribbon on the obverse and US on the reverse. Sword is accompanied by a brass mounted leather scabbard with two suspension rings that is seamed up the middle of the rear.

Condition: Good. Blade with a dull gray patina, showing scattered surface oxidation, pitting, and discoloration. Etching worn and only partially visible. Hilt good with an uncleaned patina and traces of gold gilt in protected areas. Grip with some light wear and minor finish loss, wire intact with some looseness. Scabbard with wear, surface scuffs, some finish loss and crazing. Stitching remains mostly solid, brass mounts with a dark, uncleaned patina.

The "star" marked trapdoor rifles and carbines were assembled for issue to state militias using a combination of older parts from returned arms and newly produced parts.

Low arch breech, 3-click tumbler, grooved trigger. Buffington rear sight marked " XC " for use on the 1886 Experimental Carbine, pinned blade front sight, sling bar and ring, trapdoor in butt with no accessories. An interesting composite Trapdoor carbine with a receiver numbered at the very end of the M1879 range/beginning of the M1884 range, but certainly too early for an 1889 cartouche and with a rare XC marked sight.

Condition: Good. Barrel with a mottled oxidized brown patina and some surface roughness, showing some moderate pitting forward of the forend. Most markings clear, mechanically functional, very good bore. Stock with wear and scattered bumps and bruises.

Standard three-line M1873 breech block markings, weak ESA over date cartouche in an oval and weak [circle]- P proof behind triggerguard. High-arch breech, narrow receiver, three-click tumbler. Stock with long, thin wrist and ;short comb, solid buttplate without trapdoor. Stepped base rear sight correctly marked " R ." Stacking swivel only, no sling swivels. Retains correct pattern jag-head cleaning rod. Rack numbered " 135 " twice on reverse butt in red paint and once stamped into the stock comb, forward of the buttplate.

Condition: Very good. Retains some of the blued finish with some wear and loss, mostly forward of the rear barrel band. Breech block with some faded case color present. Markings in metal crisp and clear. Mechanically functional, very good bore with some lightly scattered oxidation and frosting present. Stock with wear, bumps and dings, and weak markings.

These "star marked" Trapdoor rifles and carbines were assembled from a combination of old and newly made parts for issue to the various state militias during the early 1880s.

Buttplate with trapdoor covering implement compartment, which is empty. One of the last of the last Trapdoor rifles to be produced from the last year of production.

No barrel proofs, script ESA in an oval cartouche on counterpane as well as a script SWP in a rectangle with rounded corners. Rack number 395 C.8 stamped in reverse of butt. Model 1864 pattern rear sight, M1863 pattern ramrod/cleaning rod, sling swivels. Only 5,000 M1865 "1st Allin" Conversion rifles were produced circa 1865, using most of the components from surplus US .58 caliber Rifle Muskets. Standard finish was bright with a case hardened breech and a blued rear sight, but this example is fully plated in tin that appears to be a period applied finish. Whether this was an experimental finish or was applied at a later date after the gun was sold for surplus is unclear, but the finish certainly appears to be from the period of use. A scarce gun in any collection of breech loading US martial arms.

US Model 1865 1st Allin Springfield Two Band Rifle

.58 RF, 33.5" barrel (36" to breech face) retained by two flat, spring-retained barrel bands, no S/N. Bright finish, case hardened breech block, smooth walnut stock. Lock marked U.S./SPRINGFIELD and with eagle, dated 1863 at tail. No barrel proofs, weak script ESA in an oval cartouche on counterpane as well as a barely legible script SWP in a rectangle with rounded corners. Model 1864 pattern rear sight, M1861 pattern ramrod/cleaning rod, two sling swivels; upper swivel may be a replacement. Only 5,000 full-length, three-barrel band M1865 "1st Allin" Conversion rifles were produced circa 1865, using most of the components from surplus US .58 caliber Rifle Muskets. Records indicate that 270 were altered for cadet use by shorting the barrel to an overall length of 36" (to breechface). The middle band was removed, and the accompanying band spring hole was filled. The upper band was relocated to its new position further back and a sling swivel stud was added to it. This gun shows the correct arsenal work to be one of the 270 guns so altered, including the remnants of the secondary SWP inspection cartouche applied after the alteration. A very scarce example of the first US military metallic cartridge cadet rifle.

Condition: Very good. Metal with a dull pewter patina, breech block retaining some nice dull blue-black color. Markings clear in metal, more worn in wood. Mechanically functional, very good bore that needs to be cleaned. Stock with wear and numerous handling marks, cartouches weak. A piece of wood has been replaced forward of the lock, under the breech block. The quality of the work, as well as the patina suggest it may be an arsenal repair, but is almost certainly from the period of use.

Springfield Joslyn Breechloading Rifle

.50-70 caliber, 34.5" barrel, secured by three rounded, spring-retained bands, S/N M2805 . Bright finish, case hardened breechblock, smooth walnut stock. Rear face of breechblock with two-line Joslyn patent marking, block serial numbered M1711 . Standard Springfield musket lock markings, dated 1864 at rear. US M18164-style rear sight, musket front sight/bayonet lug, two sling swivels, jag head cleaning rod. The Springfield produced Joslyn breech loading rifle was the first metallic cartridge breech loading long arm to be manufactured at Springfield Arsenal, ca 1865 with 3,007 produced in .50RF (.50-60-450). Circa 1869-70 some 1,600 of these guns were altered to .50-70, with the breechblocks altered to centerfire. All these altered examples show mixed serial numbers. These guns were then sold to France for use in the Franco-Prussian War. Those guns were later sold as surplus with many being altered for civilian use as shotguns. This is one of those mixed number, .50-70 altered rifles that remains in its original military configuration and in very nice condition.

Condition: Very good. Metal shows a pewter patina with some lightly scattered surface oxidation and some lightly scattered pinpricking. Markings remain clear, mechanically functional, fine bore. Wood crisp with scattered bumps, dings and mars.

In all ways this rifle conforms correctly to a Type II M1884 Cadet rifle, with the exception of the serial number of the receiver, which is in the M1879 range. .45-70 caliber, 32.625" barrel retained by two barrel bands, S/N 65479 . Blued and color case hardened finish, smooth walnut stock with long wrist and short comb. Standard early Springfield lock markings with 1873 on third line, early breech block marked U.S./MODEL/1873 over crossed arrows, small script SWP cartouche in an oval opposite lock, [circle]-P proof behind triggerguard. High arch breech, two-click tumbler, smooth trigger, solid buttplate without implement compartment. M1873 rear sight, musket-style front sight/bayonet lug, stacking and sling swivels, M1873 jag head cleaning rod with flat face. Equipped with experimental Metcalf device loading block attachment. 1,008 US M1873 rifles were assembled with the Metcalf modifications during 1876, with the guns believed to be in the 60,000 to 74,000 serial number range. The system attached a wooden block that held 8 spare cartridges on the right side of the gun, in front of the lock plate. A very scarce variant rifle for the advanced trapdoor collector.

Condition: Fine. Retains much of the blued finish with the case color fading and dulling. Marking remain clear and crisp. Mechanically function, fine bore. Stock with scattered handling marks and a couple of very small surface chips around the tang area, but retaining some feathery texture. A very nice example of a very rare Trapdoor.

Low arch breech, smooth trigger, 3-click tumbler. 1879 buckhorn rear sight, retains stacking and both sling swivels, buttplate with trapdoor and stock drilled for accessories. Triangular ramrod bayonet with appropriate latch system. A scarce example of a US M1880 "Trials Rifle," of which only 1,001 were manufactured to test the practicality of the ramrod bayonet on an infantry rifle, a concept that had been briefly tried with the Hall Carbine issued to the US Dragoons during the 1830s and was promptly abandoned. This rifle started the flirtation with the ramrod bayonet concept that would enamor the Ordnance Department until the early 1900s.

Low arch breech, 3-click tumbler, smooth trigger. 1879 pattern rear sight graduated to " 15 " and correctly marked " C " on the ladder, pinned blade front sight, sling bar and ring, trapdoor in butt with no accessories. These "star" marked carbines were assembled at Springfield for the use of state militias (National Guard) circa 1881-1882, using available parts on hand, including a combination of newly made and salvaged parts from earlier guns that had been turned in, thus they do not always conform exactly to standard production models in terms of features or markings.

Condition: Very good. Retains some thinning blue on the barrel, breech block with traces of case color, primarily on the interior. Markings remain clear and crisp. Mechanically functional, very good bore with some dust and dirt near muzzle. Stock with numerous scattered bumps, dings and mars.

Springfield Model 1873 Carbine

.45-70 caliber, 22" barrel with single barrel band with stacking swivel, S/N 35514 . Blued and color casehardened finish, smooth walnut stock. Standard early Springfield trapdoor lock markings with 1873 date, 1873 breech block markings over crossed arrows, no barrel proofs. Legible SWP/1888 cartouche opposite lock and faint [circle]-P proof behind triggerguard. High arch breech, 2-click tumbler, smooth trigger. 1873 pattern rear sight graduated to " 12 " on the ladder, 1st type carbine front sight, sling bar without ring, solid buttplate. The initials JB are stamped in the buttplate tang and behind the sling bar, in front of the cartouche. Stock is a later M1884 carbine stock drilled for tools and accessories. The carbine could be a "cleaned and repaired" arsenal refurbished example or simply an early 1873 carbine that had its stock replaced at some point during its lifetime. Essentially a straight M1873 carbine that only needs an early stock to return it to its "as made" configuration.

Condition: Good. Retains some of a later added blue finish, markings clear in metal, mechanically functional, good bore with frosting and light pitting. Stock worn with bumps and dings, weak marks and some added finish.

Very weak ESA cartouche without date is visible opposite lock, visible [circle]-P proof behind triggerguard. Script ESA cartouche on rear of counterpane, second illegible cartouche possibly a Civil War era musket inspection, indicating the use of an older stock in the assembly of the this rifle. Rack numbered E/16 on top of buttplate. Long-range leaf rear sight, combination musket-type front sight/bayonet lug, cleaning rod, sling swivels.

Condition: Good. Metal with a dull pewter patina and showing freckled oxidation. Most marks clear and legible. Mechanically functional, good bore with even frosting and light pitting. Stock with wear, bumps, dings and mars.

Lee Vertical Action Springfield Rifle

.45-70 caliber, 32.625" barrel retained by two barrel bands, no S/N. Blued finish, smooth straight-gripped walnut stock. Receiver tang marked U.S. / PAT. MAR. 16th 1875 . No proofs on barrel, fine script ESA cartouche on reverse wrist. US M1873 pattern rear sight, graduated to 11 , musket-style front sight/bayonet lug. 1873 pattern flat faced jag head cleaning rod, retains both sling swivels and stacking swivel. These very scarce rifles designed by James Paris Lee utilized a Martini style dropping block action. Only 143 were produced circa 1875, making these one of the rarest of the US martial rifles from the Indian Wars period.

Condition: Very good. Retains some thinned blued finish with a mostly plum brown patina and some scattered flecks of surface oxidation. All markings remain clear, mechanically functional, very good, lightly frosted bore, stock crisp with scattered bumps and dings and handling marks.

Correctly marked C-R M1879 pattern rear sight, musket type front sight/bayonet lug, slotted head cleaning rod. Only 753 Chaffee-Reese rifles were produced ca 1884, making them scarce guns from the late Indian Wars era.

Condition: Fine. Retains most of the blued finish with some thinning, fading and light wear. All markings remain clear and crisp. Bolt is mechanically functional, but part of the feed mechanism in the butt magazine is missing. Fine bore, stock with scattered bumps, dings and minor mars. A previous owner has lightly scratched his name and a date in the reverse buttstock below the cartouche.

Model 1888 Positive Cam Rifle

.45-70 caliber, 32.625" barrel with two barrel bands, S/N 415533 . Blued and color case hardened finish, smooth walnut stock. Standard Springfield lock markings and barrel proofs, 1888 marked breech bock, clear SWP/1888 cartouche on reverse of stock and fine [circle]-P proof behind triggerguard. Low arch breech, grooved trigger, 3-click tumbler. Correct Buffington rear sight, musket style front sight/bayonet lug, correct cleaning rod, retains stacking and both sling swivels, solid buttplate without trapdoor. Only 100 of these experimental "Positive Cam" rifles were produced ca 1888 and they are extreme rarities for the Trapdoor collector. This is a really nice example of a US M1888 Positive Cam rifle.

Condition: Fine. Retains much of the blued finish which is thinning and mixing with a plum brown patina, showing some scattered flecks of minor surface oxidation as well. Lock marked in two lines: U.S./SPRINGFIELD with spread-winged eagle motif and decorated with high quality foliate scroll engraving. Receiver, barrel tang, hammer, buttplate tang, triggerguard, barrel band and forend cap all engraved en-suite. Breech block with standard M1873 markings, no cartouche present but fine [circle]-P proof is present in toe line of stock behind the termination of the wrist checkering. M1879 rear sight, dovetailed blade front sight with folding globe, adjustable vernier tang rear sight with incorrect ladder and eye piece. Small German silver escutcheon at wrist engraved with the script initials MHA . Low arch breech, 2-click tumbler, solid buttplate. Slotted wooden cleaning rod with nickel plated tip. Only 477 M1875 Trapdoor "Officers" rifles were assembled ca 1875-1885, and they are very scarce and desirable Trapdoor rifle variants.

Condition: Very good. Retains streaky traces of blued finish on the barrel mixed with a smooth plum patina. M1896 rear sight, pinned blade front sight with white bead, receiver mounted fully-adjustable aperture peep sight. Retains stacking and sling swivels. Trapdoor in butt for cleaning rods that are not present. Only 841 Krag .22 Gallery Rifles were produced ca 1906-1907, with some being fully assembled and inspected at Springfield and the balance being sent out as barreled actions to be dropped into existing stocks in the field. This gun appears to be one of those former, arsenal assembled gallery guns. A very scarce US martial practice rifle not often seen for sale.

Interestingly, # 68401 and # 68414 are recorded in the Springfield Research Service serial number books as having been issued to the 1st US Volunteer Cavalry.

Early British Lend Lease Springfield M-1 Garand Rifle

.30-06 caliber, 24" barrel, S/N 405508 . Parkerized finish, smooth walnut pistol-gripped stock. Standard Springfield Armory receiver markings, barrel dated 11-41 and with added British proofs. Serial number of rifle places it in November of 1941 production, matching the barrel. Receiver draw numbered D28291-14 , uncut 3-SA operating rod, SA B-2-0 bolt, 3-SA triggerguard, 5-SA trigger housing, 2-SA hammer. Rear sight appears to be correct, flush-nut, pre-lock bar sight for this serial number range, but the windage knob is serrated on the edge rather than checkered. Elevation knob is correctly checkered. Retains stacking and sling swivels and is accompanied by a leather M1907 sling. Overall a solid Lend-Lease Garand produced the month before the United States entered World War II.

Condition: Very good. Retains much of the Parkerized finish, with some fading, wear and loss, particularly at the muzzle. Markings on metal remain clear, no cartouche or stock marks present. Mechanically functional, very good bore with scattered light oxidation. Both throat and muzzle erosion measure "2". Stock lightly sanded and refinished.

Take-down configuration with matching numbers on frame and barrel assembly. Barrel with standard Winchester address markings, additionally marked as having a 2 3/4" chamber and cylinder bore. Right side of frame marked with U.S. / [flaming bomb] , top of barrel marked with [flaming bomb] proof forward of Winchester proof. Reverse buttstock with boxed W.B. cartouche over small .35" Ordnance Wheel inspection stamp (Waldemar Broberg #4 cartouche per Pate & Daum). Overall an extremely fine condition example of a late-WWII production Model 12 US Military Trench Gun in a wonderful state of preservation.

Condition: Fine. Retains most of the blued finish, with some light wear, thinning and loss, showing, some freckled surface oxidation, particularly on the bottom of the frame and barrel at the junction. A few minor finish scratches are present as well. All markings crisp and clear, both in the wood and the metal. Mechanically functional, with a fine, bright bore. Wood shows scattered bumps, dings, scratches and mars. Really a great example of a WWII trench gun in very nice condition.

Condition: Fine condition with an excellent bore. This gun retains most of its original matte blue finish with some high edge wear, thinning on the frame and grip strap and some freckles of surface oxidation on the frame. The grips are fine and the pistol is mechanically excellent.

Condition: Excellent condition with virtually all of the blue finish and nearly all of the straw finish with only very minor wear on the trigger. All visible numbers are matching, including the magazine. There is one tiny rust pit on the top of the barrel but it does not detract from the overall appearance of this fine pistol. This is a fine example for the discriminating collector.

Right side of slide marked: COLT AUTOMATIC / CALIBER 45 and right side of frame marked: GOVERNMENT MODEL over the serial number. Left side of frame marked PATENTED APR. 20, 1897, SEPT. 9, 1902 / DEC. 19, 1905 FEB. 14, 1911, AUG. 19, 1913 , and COLT'S PT. F.A. MFG. CO. / HARTFORD, CT. U.S.A. with the Rampant Colt logo at the rear of the slide. The right side of the slide is additionally stamped in individual letters: CAPT. H.C. HEITMEYER US INFANTRY / AEF above the Colt markings and with the initials HcH to the rear of the slide. Long smooth-faced trigger, wide hammer spur, flat mainspring housing. Blued barrel with bright hood, swivel lug marked " J " on left side. Slide marked " S " under firing pin plate and " 2 ". Includes a single two-tone magazine with lanyard loop.

Harry C. Heitmeyer was born April 10, 1885 in Cincinnati, OH and served in Company G of the 2nd Pioneer Infantry during the WWI. He sailed for France from Newport News on the USS Mercury . The 2nd Pioneers were attached to the III Corps in the A.E.F. and as one officer noted: "they did everything the Infantry was too proud to do, and the Engineers too lazy to do." While most pioneers saw little actual combat, the 2nd Pioneers worked under almost constant fire and were involved in combat during the Ainse-Marne offensive during July-August of 1918 and the Meuse-Argonne offensive from September to November of that year. The 2nd Pioneers remained in France for nearly a year after the armistice to assist with the "clean up" of the battle zones. Harry C. Heitmeyer was still listed on the US Army Reserve list as a captain as late as the Vietnam War era and passed away in 1971.

Condition: Very good. Pistol retains some of the high polish commercial blue finish that these early Colt's are known for. There is some flaked loss and thinning, primarily on the slide from holster wear. Hammer, trigger and thumb safety all retain some nice niter blue. Mechanically functional, very good bore. Grips with wear, particularly align the bottom edges with some loss of sharpness to the checkering. Over all a nice, solid example of an early commercial 1911 with a very cool period identification to First World War soldier from Cincinnati.

Pistol is accompanied by Colt Factory Letter that lists this gun as part of a total of 3,150 pistols shipped to Springfield Armory on June 28, 1941. Also includes an unmarked brown pasteboard box with green wax paper.

Condition: Very fine to near excellent. Retains the vast majority of the blued finish with some minor thinning and wear and a few minor surface scratches. All markings remain clear and crisp. An interesting, "semi-Fitz Special" that might be worth a factory letter to see if this was one of John Henry Fitzgerald's early attempts at combat modifications for a revolver.

Water table marked 4/12 and with serial number, which is matching on the barrel, forend and triggerguard tang. Engraved receiver with simple scrolls and sporting scenes.

Condition: Very good. Retains most of the blued finish on the barrel, which is thinning and what appears to be a later applied dull blue finish on the receiver, over some pitting on the triggerguard tang. Mechanically functional, fine bore. Stock with light handling marks.

.410 gauge, 26" barrel, S/N 705 (mfg. ca 1933). Blued finish, take-down frame, checkered straight-gripped butt with checkered hard rubber Winchester buttplate and checkered forend. Standard Winchester markings, choked skeet, 3" chamber.

Condition: Very good. Retains most of the blued finish, all markings clear, mechanically functional, fine bore. Barrel appears to be renumbered to match the gun. Stock cut 1.5" from butt and reattached, possibly shortening the gun for a young shooter and returning it to its original length when they were older. The wood appears to match perfectly and the straight cut suggests a very intentional shortening. Otherwise, wood with light handling marks. Were it not for the stock cut, the gun would rate at least very fine.
