It’s actually Elvis singing! RARE Dentzel Carousel Animal/Horse Standing Camel Lot #1099 (Sale Order 110 of 347) RARE! Standing Camel Carousel Animal approximately 1915, measurement of length - 64", from West View Park where there were many Muller carvings. This camel APPEARS to be one of the Dentzel carvings on the machine. The confirming details are the buckle neck collar and bridle, as well as the scalloped trappings, so familiar in the Dentzel Hunting Hounds and Giraffes of the former Dollywood-now-Lancaster Dentzel carousel. The unusual eagle saddle and details of buckles make this carousel figure quite rare as a menagerie animal and a Dentzel. I understand this figure has been called a Muller and the identification can be very close, since so many details are identical in Dentzel and Muller factories--after all, Muller carved for Dentzel for many years. But, the camel details strongly support the Dentzel ID and there were of record, Dentzel animals on the West View Park Carousels (there were 2 carousels in the Park).

Helmet History: This helmet was built in 1934 by Ray Merenkov of Cicero, IL for the sole purpose of recovering slot machines that were confiscated and dumped by the authorities in the flooded Lemont Quarries. If Ray were alive today, he’d be 104 years old, but as a 20 year old young man, living in the part of Cicero known as Hawthorne, he and his friends witnessed raids by the authorities of numerous corner saloons where the illegal gambling machines were confiscated and dragged into the street, which were then broken apart by the authorities as a public display, then loaded into police vehicles to be disposed of or dumped in the abandoned, flooded La Mont Quarries, never to be seen or used again. However this process was witnessed by Ray and his friends where they recovered several of these in an effort to retrieve the coins that were still left in the payout tubes and jackpots during the Depression Era and money was scarce. Due to the depths and cold temperatures of the quarry, Ray thought to build a diving helmet to recover the coins in a more efficient manner. Upon completion of the helmet, Ray and his friends took the helmet to one of the flooded quarries where the slot machines had been dumped. On its maiden voyage, Ray proceeded into the depths on his mission to recover their loot. Attached to the top of the helmet were a rope and an air hose. The air was supplied via a bicycle pump, operated by one of his friends. Descending into the dark, cold depths, Ray quickly learned that the air supply was not sufficient and as he proceeded deeper, the extreme cold caused his muscles to cramp and as the water level rose inside the helmet, he realized he had to turn back as it was not going to plan. At that moment, he suddenly slipped off a ledge and fell even deeper into the depths of the flooded quarry. Surrounded by junk, he became tangled in the rope and airline as he struggled to free himself from the 100+ lb helmet which was dragging him down. Hopelessly tangled, Ray thought this was the end. However, he somehow miraculously freed himself from the helmet and was able to save himself and swim to the surface. They later recovered the helmet and after that near-death experience, it was never to be used again. Its maiden voyage was a hopeless failure and nearly killed Ray at 20 years of age. No more slot machines were ever recovered. This true story was told to us by Ray’s son, Roger Merenkov.

Vintage Henderson Bicycle Lot #1394 (Sale Order 341 of 347) A seldom seen Henderson bicycle produced between 1917-1920 by Arnold, Schwinn & Co. of Chicago Illinois. In the early 1900s the bicycle market in the U.S. was completely saturated and smaller companies were either bought out or went bankrupt. Schwinn purchased the Henderson Company in 1917 and continued the name under the Arnold-Schwinn brand. Schwinn also manufactured Excelsior-Henderson motorcycles. This model features chain drive and coaster brakes. It is currently about 80% restored. It only needs a chain and for the fenders to be repainted and reattached. The seat is a reproduction.

1904 Pope Rambler Chainless Model 451 Bicycle Lot #1395 (Sale Order 342 of 347) This is a rare opportunity to own an example of one of the most sought after model of bicycles ever produced. It is a 1904 Pope Rambler Chainless Model 451. It has an older restoration and has been in a private collection for many years. The restoration has followed original Pope Rambler specs with the frame color being the maroon option. We doubt that there is a finer example to be found on the market. Albert Pope’s bicycle ‘Trust’, a conglomerate of nearly all the American bicycle manufacturers, lasted only two years before it went bust in 1902. Pope bought out all of the other manufacturing partners and then had free use of all the bicycle names previously owned by the companies that had been his competitors. ‘Rambler’ had been the top model name of Gormully & Jeffery, his leading competitor and frequent litigant, but now Pope was free to use it on his own line. As well as using the Rambler name for his bicycles he also used it for his newly introduced motorcycles (then known as ‘motor bicycles’) and automobiles. The leading Pope Rambler bicycle was The Chainless ‘Model 451’ at $65. See the last image for original company specifications.

1898 Crescent Tandem No. 2 Bicycle Lot #1396 (Sale Order 343 of 347) The 1898 Crescent Tandem No. 2 Bicycle was manufactured by Western Wheel Works, Chicago, Illinois. This nicely restored "sweetheart" tandem (lady in front, gentleman in rear) is one of the nicest tandems we have ever had at auction. Tandems were often used for courting in the 1890s, and while it was considered proper for the woman to have the front seat, it wasn't considered proper for her to steer or control the bicycle. This tandem is equipped with dual steering. The rear handlebars turn in unison with the front by means of a pair of steel rods connecting the front forks with the rear head tube. The bike weighs 46 pounds and features 28 x 1 ½” pneumatic tires on wooden rims. While the bicycle is in motion the pedal cranks continually revolve so that the riders are unable to pause or coast. To slow or stop the bicycle the riders would resist the motion of the pedals, as there is no braking system. Overall a VG older restoration, black frame with green pinstripes. The front pedals and front seat are replacements and do not match the originals. Prior to parts being stamped, the main parts of a bicycle frame were all forged or drop forged (which increased the strength). Forging was quick and cheap by comparison and it produced reasonably strong bicycle components. Western Wheel Works became the largest bicycle producer in the country by the later 1890's partially by adopting and perfecting stamping before everyone else. By 1899 they were churning out 160,000 bicycles a year from the largest bicycle factory in the world (375,000 square feet, 1,500 employees). After the big bicycle bust of 1900 the WWW factory eventually became the Dr. Scholl's factory. Today parts of it still exist as the upscale Cobbler's Square Lofts on 1350 N. Wells St. in Chicago.
