The most common block is the AA block, the IA, JA, KA, and LA blocks also exist, and these are scarcer. The lowest serial number notes were presented to important officials in Washington DC. These were given out in sheets of 12. There are still some uncut sheets that exist. All 1928 one dollar silver certificate notes feature a portrait of George Washington at center and a blue seal on the left hand side of the note. All 1928 $1 silver certificates are known as “funnybacks.” They get this name from their distinctive back design.

1966 Special Mint Set 40% Silver Half Dollar Special Mint Set Lot #38 (Sale Order 25 of 368) 1966 Special Mint Set 40% Silver Half Dollar Special Mint Set. In 1964, just when the mint was removing 90% silver coins from circulation, and the us was having a coin shortage, the Mint announced that beginning in 1965, no Proof Sets, or Mint Sets would be produced, Instead they would be making a Special Mint Set. Special Mint Set coins were not proofs, and were not uncirculated, Mint State pieces. Dies for the coins were over polished, while the planchet themselves were not polished. The resulting SMS coins have a brilliant, proof like appearance, much nicer than the run-of-the-mill circulation coins. In 1965 these sets were released in the Traditional Mint Cellophane and White Envelope and in 1966 and 1967 they were packaged in hard, pale blue plastic holders. Note, the set contains a 40% Half Dollar.

When notes are discovered that have been printed incorrectly (such as having the serial numbers upside down, etc.) the misprinted "error notes" are replaced with star notes because no two bills within a certain series can be produced with the same serial number. They are used to maintain a correct count of notes in a serial number run. By their nature, star notes are more scarce than notes with standard serial numbers and as such are widely collected by numismatists. Some of the highest prices paid for modern (post-1928) U.S. banknotes have been for star notes. The note itself is a Silver Certificate. They were redeemable in Silver. The most common block is the AA block, the IA, JA, KA, and LA blocks also exist, and these are scarcer. The lowest serial number notes were presented to important officials in Washington DC. These were given out in sheets of 12. There are still some uncut sheets that exist. All 1928 one dollar silver certificate notes feature a portrait of George Washington at center and a blue seal on the left hand side of the note. All 1928 $1 silver certificates are known as “funnybacks.” They get this name from their distinctive back design.

Many people ask why the 2008 set is so much higher priced than the other near dates. It had a slightly lower mintage, but not drastically. Well I just researched this as I too was very curious and here is the answer. The mint shut down sales of the set in June, 5 months earlier than usual and although the mintage of 1.5 million pieces seems near par with the 2-3 million pieces of other near dates, with the mint shutting down sales and many folks who were collecting the whole series, (this was the final piece to the 50 state quarter series) getting shut out, they immediately went to the secondary market. But most of the 1.5 million sold by the mint went to collectors who bought them to keep and did not sell them into the secondary market. So you basically had a shortage of about 1/2 to 1 million sets below demand. The Set contains 5 90% Silver Proof Quarters, a 90% Silver Proof Kennedy Half Dollar, a 90% Silver Proof Roosevelt Dime, 4 Proof Presidential Dollars Including the Inaugural first 4, Washington through Madison, as well as 3 additional Proof coins Including the Sacagawea Proof Dollar coin. This set contains about 1 1/2 ounces of pure silver. Complete with Original Packaging and COA.

1966 Special Mint Set 40% Silver Half Dollar Special Mint Set Lot #230 (Sale Order 119 of 368) 1966 Special Mint Set 40% Silver Half Dollar Special Mint Set. In 1964, just when the mint was removing 90% silver coins from circulation, and the us was having a coin shortage, the Mint announced that beginning in 1965, no Proof Sets, or Mint Sets would be produced, Instead they would be making a Special Mint Set. Special Mint Set coins were not proofs, and were not uncirculated, Mint State pieces. Dies for the coins were over polished, while the planchet themselves were not polished. The resulting SMS coins have a brilliant, proof like appearance, much nicer than the run-of-the-mill circulation coins. In 1965 these sets were released in the Traditional Mint Cellophane and White Envelope and in 1966 and 1967 they were packaged in hard, pale blue plastic holders. Note, the set contains a 40% Half Dollar.

Large Size, Plain Edge variety. Success Medals are an interesting genre of Washingtonia. They come in two different sizes with edges that are either reeded or plain and in metals that are either copper or brass. Success Medals do not bear a date, creating some discussion as to when they were actually made. Some researchers believe they were made circa 1795; others believe they were made in the mid-1800's. If the 15 stars on the reverse represent 15 states (as was the custom on U.S. coins for a short period), then these would have been made after Kentucky joined the Union in 1792 and before Tennessee joined in 1796. The obverses of the Success Medals feature a bust of Washington facing right, with his name surrounding him. The reverse features the all-seeing eye of God with rays and stars emanating from the center (similar to the reverse of the Nova Constellation Patterns and Coppers). The legend SUCCESS TO THE UNITED STATES encircles the design.

1966 Special Mint Set 40% Silver Half Dollar Special Mint Set Lot #546 (Sale Order 295 of 368) 1966 Special Mint Set 40% Silver Half Dollar Special Mint Set. In 1964, just when the mint was removing 90% silver coins from circulation, and the us was having a coin shortage, the Mint announced that beginning in 1965, no Proof Sets, or Mint Sets would be produced, Instead they would be making a Special Mint Set. Special Mint Set coins were not proofs, and were not uncirculated, Mint State pieces. Dies for the coins were over polished, while the planchet themselves were not polished. The resulting SMS coins have a brilliant, proof like appearance, much nicer than the run-of-the-mill circulation coins. In 1965 these sets were released in the Traditional Mint Cellophane and White Envelope and in 1966 and 1967 they were packaged in hard, pale blue plastic holders. Note, the set contains a 40% Half Dollar.

These were given out in sheets of 12. There are still some uncut sheets that exist. All 1928 one dollar silver certificate notes feature a portrait of George Washington at center and a blue seal on the left hand side of the note. All 1928 $1 silver certificates are known as “funnybacks.” They get this name from their distinctive back design.

This note does not have the familiar "In God We Trust" motto above the Memorial, though, as that motto was not added until 1957. The Blue Seal is large and at right; a large blue "5" dominates the left side of the note.

When notes are discovered that have been printed incorrectly (such as having the serial numbers upside down, etc.) the misprinted "error notes" are replaced with star notes because no two bills within a certain series can be produced with the same serial number. They are used to maintain a correct count of notes in a serial number run. By their nature, star notes are more scarce than notes with standard serial numbers and as such are widely collected by numismatists. Some of the highest prices paid for modern (post-1928) U.S. banknotes have been for star notes. The note itself is a Silver Certificate. They were redeemable in Silver. One of their most distinctive qualities is the blue Treasury seal and serial numbers. These notes include an additional legend printed on the face that is not present on any other Federal Reserve notes. The legend states that Silver had been deposited in the Treasury and was payable on demand to the note’s bearer.

The most common block is the AA block, the IA, JA, KA, and LA blocks also exist, and these are scarcer. The lowest serial number notes were presented to important officials in Washington DC. These were given out in sheets of 12. There are still some uncut sheets that exist. All 1928 one dollar silver certificate notes feature a portrait of George Washington at center and a blue seal on the left hand side of the note. All 1928 $1 silver certificates are known as “funnybacks.” They get this name from their distinctive back design.
