Seated in her well-fitted maple wood bed with acorn finials, lace canopy top and rose-silk quilt and pillows is a bisque head doll with blue glass paperweight eyes, lushly painted lashes, dark eyeliner, rose-blushed eyelids, brushstroked brows, closed mouth with shaded lips, pierced ears, blonde mohair wig, carton torso containing mechanism, wire upper arms, paper mache lower arms. Attached to the bed is a brass frame with acrobat doll. When wound, the child raises upright and extends her arms toward the tiny doll which swings teasingly in the opposite direction. Condition: generally excellent. Marks: F.G. 7. Comments: French, circa 1890, doll by Gaultier. Value Points: the intricate mechanism contains two completely separate works plus a separate crying bellows, designed to work in unison, and enhanced by luxury quality of the doll, bed, and bed fittings.

Outstanding French Mechanical Double-Goat Cabriolet from the Napoleon III Era 4500/5500 Lot #20 (Sale Order 21 of 347) 26" (66 cm.) A pair of lambswool-over-paper mache goats are pulling a fancily woven wicker double-seated cabriolet with driver's seat and foot rest, red metal spoked wheels and elaborately shaped carriage under-bed. The carriage is upholstered in aqua silk with rich tufting and pleats and with braid edging, has foot steps, and a pair of elegant gilded carriage lamps. The goats have painted faces with leather ears, horns, and glass eyes, and their hinged legs attach to the undercarriage mechanical device which, when wound, cause the goats to briskly trot along pulling the carriage. Condition: generally excellent. Comments: French, circa 1865. Value Points: exceptionally rare luxury toy in superbly preserved original condition.

Rare Variation of French Sevres Porcelain Jardiniere with Single Bird by Bontems 8000/11,000 Lot #22 (Sale Order 23 of 347) 25" (64 cm.) Presented upon an ebony wooden base is a luxury porcelain jardiniere by Sevres with a lavish hand-painted array of garden flowers centered by a brightly-feathered bird, and with a pair of gilt lion head handles at each side. The jardiniere is filled with a bounty of silk flowers of various colors and styles and is surmounted by a feathered blue bird perched on a branch. When wound, the bird turns its head side to side, flits its tail feathers and merrily chirps while opening and closing its mouth. Condition: generally excellent. Comments: Bontems, Paris, 1880. Value Points: a felicitous presentation by the talented artisan who, after studying actual bird cries in the Bois de Boulogne of Paris, brought those sounds and movements to life with realistic mechanical movements, combining this with the extraordinary artistry of Sevres porcelain painters.

A gentleman with pale bisque head, blue glass inset eyes, painted features, closed mouth, white mohair periwig, carton torso and legs in seated pose, wire upper arms, carved wooden lower arms and hands, wearing silk Marquis costume with brocade vest and lace jabot and cuffs is seated on a wooden upholstered arm chair, posed behind a wooden harp with ormolu trim. When wound, he moves his head side to side and leaning forward and back in time to the playing of the harp; he strums his hands realistically up and down the strings of the harp. Melodious music plays. Condition: generally excellent. Comments: attributed to Jean Roullet, circa 1880. Value Points: well-preserved luxury automaton with pleasing musical background, realistic movements, choice bisque and presentation.

Bisque socket head, deep blue glass paperweight inset eyes, thick dark eyeliner, lushly-painted lashes, brushstroked and feathered brows, accented eye corners, blushed eyeshadow, shaded nostrils, closed mouth with shaded lips, separately-modelled pierced ears, brunette human hair over cork pate, French composition and wooden fully-jointed body with plump limbs, beautiful antique costume, undergarments, bonnet, parasol, and Jumeau leather shoes. Condition: generally excellent, retouch on body finish. Marks: Depose Jumeau 20 (incised marking on head, and artist checkmarks) Bebe Jumeau Diplome d'Honneur (body). Comments: Emile Jumeau, circa 1884, the largest size created of his bebe, this with rare markings, being the first time his name appeared on the bebe head. It is probable that the doll was created as an exhibition model, appearing either at the Antwerp Exposition of 1885 where Jumeau competed fiercely against German competitors who were copying his dolls, or in the 1884 salon of the French Union des Fabricants de Jouets, of which Jumeau was a charter member and which provided a Paris showroom for French dolls and toys. Value Points: exceptional rarity of the size 20 bebe, no other example with the incised "Depose" marking is known to exist, and with gorgeous bisque and painting, and with original signed Jumeau shoes, marked size 20, with gilt letter markings.

Rare Early 18th Century Carved Wooden Doll, Walking Mechanism, Provenance 12,000/17,000 Lot #69 (Sale Order 69 of 347) 19" (48 cm.) Wooden head doll with oil-painted over gesso complexion and features, enamel inset eyes and distinctive character expression, on kid-skin covered shaped torso, wearing (frail) original costume of pale blue green silk over homespun linen with metallic trims. The torso rests upon metal rods that attach to the heavy clockwork motor; the motor is constructed of hand-wrought iron work including wheel rims, governor bracket, governor flywheel, escape gear and pinions. When wound, the doll turns her head from side to side, moving her arms, and gliding in a series of circles and forward; the steering wheel can be positioned to follow a wide or close circle, or to make a straight run. Condition: original painted finish and costume albeit very worn, mechanism intact and functioning. Comments: European, possibly Augsburg, early 1700s. Value Points: very rare early mechanical doll, with extensive provenance and reference. Provenance: ex-collection of Paul Gendre of France, the rare piece was earlier owned by the noted French painter and collector Jules Cavailles. In the book, Les Automates, by Jean Prasteau (Grund, 1968) the author relates how he visited the atelier of Cavailles to view his famous collection, spotted the Carved Walking Woman and declared it "la pice la plus remarquable de la collection". The piece was also discussed and photographed in Les Automates by Eliane Maingot (Hachette, 1959).

Rare American Toy "Our New Clergyman" by Automatic Toy Works 2500/3500 Lot #70 (Sale Order 70 of 347) 11" (28 cm.) Standing behind a lectern on a wooden platform with original gilt stenciled red painted finish is a sculpted black man with defined hair, mouth carved open as though speaking, glass eyes, wooden block torso, hinged wooden legs, metal hinged arms, remnants of original costume; when wound, he leans forward and back, waving his arm, as though preaching. Condition: very good, original finish, mechanism functions. Costume frail. Comments: the toy was issued by Automatic Toy Works of New York, circa 1885, in two variations, this example named "Our New Clergyman, Brudder Gardner" in their catalog with the humorous note "he preaches as long as any preacher ought to, and stops when he gets through". A series of comic vaudeville speeches was published in the early 1880s featuring Brudder Gardner, inspiring this rare toy.

Standing upon a wooden box with dove-tailed construction and containing a hidden mechanism are two carved wooden black dolls with loosely jointed shoulders, hips and ankles, and having sculpted hair and painted facial features, painted gloves and stockings, and original costumes. When key-wound, the figures dance about in a carefree manner. Condition: generally excellent. Comments: Automatic Toy Works of New York, founded by Robert Clay in 1868 and later purchased by Ives, Connecticut, circa 1880, who presented this model. Solid domed bisque swivel head, flat-cut neck socket on bisque shoulder plate, a different facial model with painted features on either side of the head, one face with sculpted frown lines, squinting eyes, closed mouth, tiny beaded teeth and "frowning" brows; the other face with a beaming smile, sculpted laughter crinkles around the eyes, impressed dimples, painted graceful brows and tiny beaded teeth. The wig pivots horizontally from an axis at the level of the ear to alternately reveal either face while the wig hides the other face. With original deposed Bru kid poupee body with square-cut collarette, gusset jointing, shapely torso,and wooden arms with dowel articulation at shoulders, elbows and wrists, separately sculpted fingers, wearing fine antique gown, undergarments, and leather boots. Condition: generally excellent. Comments: Leon Casimir Bru, the earliest version of his 1867 depose for "Poupee Surprise"; made for one or two years only. French Musical Automaton "Smiling Black Lad with Banjo" by Vichy 7500/10,000 Lot #104 (Sale Order 104 of 347) 23" (58 cm.) Seated upon a velvet-covered wooden stool that contains the clockwork mechanism is a black-complexioned barefoot boy with carefree expression, paper mache head, brown glass eyes, mohair lashes, very handsome countenance, slightly parted lips with a row of teeth, black fleeced hair, carton torso and legs, hinged right knee, paper mache hands, wearing brown pants with rolled-up cuffs, silk jacket, plaid shirt, and brown cap. He holds a wooden banjo, and, when wound, he turns his head from side to side and nods, his eyelids open and close, he picks the banjo strings, and his leg taps, assumedly in time to the music which plays. Condition: generally excellent, mechanism functions although would benefit from refinement. Comments: Vichy, circa 1890, the automata was featured in an early Vichy catalog, named Petit Negro Jouant du Banjo, #599, and was noted as being deposed. Value Points: rare automaton with wonderfully modeled face, appealing movements and music.

Each has bisque socket head with deeply-defined facial features, large glass paperweight inset eyes with spiral threaded eyes, thick dark eyeliner, painted dark curly lashes, rose-blushed eyeshadow, brushstroked fringed brows, accented eye corners and shaded nostrils, closed mouth with outlined lips, pierced ears, brunette human hair over cork pate, French composition and wooden fully-jointed body with uniquely-shaped lower arms designed to extend in front of body with clasped hands. Condition: generally excellent. Marks: Bru Jne R 13. Comments: Maison Bru, Girard epoch, circa 1892, a photograph of the dolls appeared in a 1950s early doll research book, describing them as The Twins; notably the dolls had spent their life together until that time, later to be separated to the home of two different collectors. In the 1890s, the then-present owner of one of the dolls was contacted by the owner of the other, and the two dolls were happily reunited. There is one blue-eyed doll, the other brown-eyed, and in all other respects the dolls are identical, including costume, and rare body variation suggesting their possible original purpose as exhibition models in a luxury notions shop, perhaps to hold and display accessories or ribbons. Value Points: the intriguing history of The Twins is enhanced by their especially fine quality of modeling, complexions, eyes and painting.

American Portrait Doll of 15th Century Countess by Dorothy Heizer 2000/2700 Lot #164 (Sale Order 165 of 347) 10" (25 cm.) Of padded fabric over wire armature with well-defined details of face and fingers, painted facial features, closed mouth, hair captured in a very distinctive cone-shaped hat ("hennin") with attached veil of mousseline de soie, wearing padded and lined wine velvet gown with ermine trim at the shoulders, cuffs, and hem, with gilt-patterned underskirt that matches the hat, black slippers, and with exceptional detail of applied gilt beads, green "emeralds" and "diamonds" at the waist sash and forming an elaborate necklace. Condition: near mint. Marks: Dorothy Wendell Heizer (original sewn-in label). Comments: American artist, Dorothy Heizer, mid-1940s; in the book, Dorothy Heizer, by Helen Bullard, the author devotes an entire chapter to "Making the French Countess of XV Century" and provides an elaborate explanation of the construction of all of her dolls, and the costume details of this particular model which was inspired by "an illumination from a French manuscript showing a betrothal". Value Points: rare model, perfectly preserved, with exquisite detail of face and costume. Included is the artist sketch of the costume and a four page handwritten letter by Dorothy Heizer describing her concept for this doll.

The paper mache harlequin is posed seated on a wooden slat-seated chair with metal frame, with very expressive smiling facial features enhanced by painted decorations, sculpted hair with high pointed topknot curl, painted costume decorated with applied sequins and "jewels", painted silver leggings and orange slippers, applied velvet shorts. Condition: generally excellent. Comments: French, mid-1800s. Value Points: very rare harlequin figure with wonderful expression and pose, and having extravagantly decorated original costume.

Condition: generally excellent. Marks: 8 (head, and untinted white space). Comments: Jumeau,circa 1892, the model was commissioned from Jumeau by a Paris department store, likely Au Samaritaine, whose paper label would originally have been affixed to the back of the doll head. Value Points: pristine unplayed with condition, the doll wears her store original ivory patterned silk dress with Alencon lace collar, matching bonnet with deluxe shaping at back of head, undergarments, original muslin chemise, Jumeau knit stockings and black leather shoes signed Paris Bebe 8 with bee symbol; she has her original wig and Jumeau earrings, and flawless bisque. Outstanding Italian Felt "Sam", Model 260, by Lenci, Brilliant Costume, Body Variation 8000/12,000 Lot #181 (Sale Order 182 of 347) 36" (91 cm.) Of ebony-black felt with pressed and painted facial features, swivel head, narrow side-glancing brown eyes, accented nostrils, red stitched and padded red lips, black curly mohair wig wrapped in a lime green felt turban decorated with embroidery and "jewels", slender black felt torso, jointed long slender black felt arms, and very elongated long black felt legs with jointed knees. Condition: near mint. Marks: Lenci (two original paper labels, one pencil noted "260"). Comments: Lenci, a standing version of the same model appeared in the 1924 catalog, also identified as model 260, and named "Sam", described as "The Sultan's Moorish Guard"; the 260 model was likely made for one or two years only. Value Points: the rarity of the model is rivaled by its pristine condition, and the extraordinary detail of costume, with vibrant appliques and embroidery on the pink, magenta, and green felt vest, sash, pants, slippers, and gloves, and with one original gilt-painted wooden earring, and a hand-carved wooden figural necklace.

All firmly-pressed black wool felt with very chubby swivel head, applied felt eye whites and lips, tinted nostrils, black shoe-button eye pupils, black wiry frizzed hair, very plump torso, jointing at shoulders and hips, short plump legs. Condition: very good, moth holes on right leg. Comments: Lenci, the doll was shown in the first Lenci advertisement of 1920, and is one of the rare earliest models. All-Original French Presentation Box "The Happy Chef" 1200/1600 Lot #229 (Sale Order 230 of 347) 16" (41 cm.) w. 32" w. when opened. 10"h. A heavy card stock box forms the framework of the kitchen of a happy chef, which is a bisque doll with blue glass sleep eyes, open mouth, chef costume. When hinged open at the center front, a bounty of kitchen supplies, tools, and accessories are revealed on each side, along with lithograph images of the chef at work; all are still tied to the boards, unplayed with. Inside is a tin stove, patterned walls, shelves, table and chairs, and a number of various other pots and pans. Condition: generally excellent. Comments: for the French market, circa 1900, the presentation sets were offered in the French Etrennes holiday catalogs of Paris department stores at that time. Value Points: delightful toy set in fine original condition.

Standing upon a wooden wheeled platform with painted ground is a bisque-headed boy with blue glass eyes, block torso and arms, alongside a paper mache donkey with leather harness, glass eyes, and nodding head. At the back of the platform is a paper mache windmill with attached shed. When the toy is pulled along, the doll turns its head from side to side, waves the stick he holds, the donkey nods its head up and down and the blades of the windmill turn. Very Rare Variation of German Bisque Three-Faced Doll by Carl Bergner 1500/1900 Lot #278 (Sale Order 278 of 347) 14" (36 cm.) A bisque socket head enclosed at the sides and the back with a cardboard hood has three different faces that are alternately revealed when the brass knob at the top is turned: an ebony black-complexioned face with crying expression, brown glass eyes, closed mouth with modeled tongue, sculpted tears; a light brown-complexioned face with slightly smiling expression, brown glass eyes, and closed mouth; and a white-complexioned face with modeled shut eyes and closed mouth. The hood is attached to a composition shoulderplate, muslin covered carton torso with pull-string "mama" crier, muslin upper legs, composition lower arms and legs. Comments: Maud Witherspoon Rag Doll Manufacturing Company of New Orleans, circa 1900; the Witherspoon family, past owners of the Ellington Plantation in St. Charles Parish, Louisiana, had ancestral ties to both the Confederate Army and civil rights advocates. Maud Witherspoon founded the doll company in order to support her widowed mother and younger sister (Cora Witherspoon, a noted American stage and film actress whose career spanned 1905-1954). Maud was described in the 1901 Indiana Weekly as a "gentle fragile girl thrown on her own resources who...noting the craze for all things Southern" determined to manufacture the very cloth dolls that she had made for pleasure while "still a mere chit of a girl" growing up in the French quarter. Standing upon a velvet covered wooden platform is a bisque-headed man with highly characterized features, oval-shaped face with prominent chin and nose, brilliant blue paperweight eyes, nearly-closed mouth arranged in a haughty amused smile, fringed lashes, painted brows, original blonde mohair wig designed as 18th century periwig, cork pate, slender carton torso and legs, bisque forearms with curled fingers. Condition: generally excellent, mechanism and music function well, originally designed as smoker but no longer functioning in that manner. Marks: N (script, head) LB (key) (original music tune label on base indicates two songs). Comments: Leopold Lambert, with commissioned bisque head likely by Jumeau, circa 1890; when wound, music plays and he alternately lifts the lorgnette, tilts his head haughtily backward, then lifts his lace-edged handkerchief as he turns his head toward it. Rare American Brown-Haired Cloth Lady with Rare Coiffure by Martha Chase 900/1300 Lot #339 (Sale Order 339 of 347) 15" (38 cm.) All-cloth doll with pressed and oil-painted facial features, slender-shaped face, brown sculpted hair drawn from her face into a coiled chignon at the back, painted large brown eyes, red eyeliner, curly upper lashes, single-stroke brows, accented nostrils and eye corners, closed mouth in very solemn expression, oil-painted torso and limbs with stitch-jointing at shoulders, elbows, hips and knees, separately-stitched thumbs. All-cloth doll with firmly-pressed and oil-painted complexion, hair and facial features, black painted short hair, brown eyes, closed mouth, muslin stitch-jointed body, oil-painted lower arms and legs. Condition: generally excellent. Comments: Martha Chase, early 1900s, the doll was likely presented as a promotional model; included is a red and white checkered dress, apron and bandana with the oral history that the doll once sat in the window of a peanut factory in Georgia. Value Points: wonderful doll with original complexion and painting, wearing antique woolen boy's suit, stockings, leather shoes.

Bisque socket head with dark glass eyes, closed mouth, painted features, attached to hollow cardboard torso which is covered with white pique taufling and trimmed with lace and blue silk ribbons, with matching bonnet and with pique bib lettered "Andre" in gilt embroidery. Felt doll with oval slender face and elongated throat, brown painted eyes with dark eyeshadow, single-stroke brows, red lips, jointing at shoulders and hips. Condition: generally excellent. Comments: French, circa 1920, the doll portrays the silent film actress, Pola Negri, who immigrated to Hollywood from Poland and Berlin to become a small Hollywood actress. Value Points: pristine condition, wearing original lace costume, from the original owner who was herself a pledging Hollywood actress in the 1940s and winner of a Miss Hollywood contest (photo of her included).
