Hard Times tokens are privately issued mostly copper large cent sized tokens that were produced from 1833 to 1844. The period of economic hardship during Van Buren's presidency (the Panic of 1837) came to be known as the "Hard Times". With America in a deep recession, people began hoarding coins as a safeguard, and small change disappeared from the marketplace. In response, merchants began buying tokens from private mints so they could make change in business transactions. They were made of copper with a reverse similar to legal U.S. cents. This example is an ideological token without a head. The ‘executive experiment’ was Van Buren’s sub-treasury idea using a fiscal agent. The tortoise carrying the safe meant the democrats could never get the Bill through congress. On the reverse is a line from Van Buren’s inaugural speech when he said, “I follow in the steps of my illustrious predecessor.” Contemporary cartoons showed Van Buren behind a Jackass stepping in its hoofprints. A rare piece of American history, and a true prize for collectors. HT-32

The variety is known as the 1809/6 overdate, indicating that the final digit is a 9 struck over a 6. However that is not possible as there was no 1806 dated Classic Head half cent. In the case of this overdate, the 9 of the date was punched into the die upside down, thus appearing as a 6. The error was caught right away and corrected by repunching a 9 in the proper orientation over the previous '6'. This variety is very popular as it is the only overdate in the classic head series.

Great Original Roll of Morgan Dollars. The roll is held in an old "Steel Strong Automatic" Wrapper Dated from 1921. The Roll is also faintly stamped "Banker Trust of Philadelphia, Central City Office, Walnut Street at Juniper". I researched that name and the Bank closed in the post-Crash of '29 Depression period (my research showed that it failed on Dec 22, 1930). The Two ends showing are the obverse of an 1895, and the other end has a 'cc' Carson City Mint Reverse. We received this incredible consignment from a private collector while at the Baltimore show. The consignee gave us his father's entire estate hoard of shotgun rolled coins. We have had great feedback on the rolls so far. According to David Hall: The 1925-D is very scarce in circulated grades and rare in mint state. In Gem condtition, it is the second rarest Denver Mint Buffalo of the 1920s after the 1927-D. Well struck examples can be found, but softness of strike on the Buffalo's horn and tail can also be seen on a significant number of mint state survivors. Luster is usually pretty good on this issue with a semi-frosty/satiny look.

Hard Times tokens are privately issued mostly copper large cent sized tokens that were produced from 1833 to 1844. The period of economic hardship during Van Buren's presidency (the Panic of 1837) came to be known as the "Hard Times". With America in a deep recession, people began hoarding coins as a safeguard, and small change disappeared from the marketplace. In response, merchants began buying tokens from private mints so they could make change in business transactions. They were made of copper with a reverse similar to legal U.S. cents. This is a Satirical Hard Times Token. The obverse depicts the phoenix rising from flames (the flames being emblematic of the opinion that the only fit use for the paper money "shin plasters" of irresponsible banks and private parties was to be burned, and the rising phoenix being emblematic of the resumption of specie payments which was an on-again off-again proposition throughout the years. This design is surrounded by the statement "Substitute for Shin Plasters" NOV 1837. The reverse states "MAY / TENTH / 1837" surrounded by wreath surrounded by SPECIE PAYMENTS SUSPENDED. On November 27th, 1837 representatives from the leading banks of nineteen states met in New York to determine a date for resumption of specie payments - the date eventually being set as May 10th, 1838. It is a rare piece of American history, and a true prize for collectors. HT-67.

According to Jaime Hernandez from PCGS, ‘The 1877 Indian Cent is unquestionably the most desirable coin in the entire circulation strike Indian Cent series. It is the second lowest mintage coin in the series, and only the 1909-S Indian cent has a lower mintage. Despite the 1877 Indian cent having the second lowest mintage in the series, it also survives in much smaller numbers than the 1909-S Indian cent. This is mainly due to the lack of coins being collected in 1877 compared to 1909. There is only one reverse die confirmed as striking all existing 1877 Indian cents. However, if there was only one reverse die employed to strike all (877,000)1877 Indian cents, then this lone die should have sustained major planchet flaws when striking such a large mintage. Surprisingly, this is not the case since 1877 cents show no traces of a damaged die. Therefore, it is strongly believed that the mintage of 877,000 coins struck, is actually a highly inflated figure.

Banks were soon forced to suspend specie payments, and tokens and fractional notes had to serve as smaller change. The obverse depicts Lady Liberty surrounded by a ring of garland. 1837 Feuchtwanger Hard Times Token 1c Grades xf+ (fc) Lot #339 (Sale Order 333 of 667) 1837 Feuchtwanger Hard Times Token 1c Grades xf+. The Feuchtwanger Cent was a "German Silver" private token coin circulated by Lewis Feuchtwanger during the 1830-1840s in the U.S. The tokens were originally created as patterns to demonstrate a new type of metal for coinage, however when these proposals failed, they were temporarily used by the public during depressions to accommodate a small change shortage. In 1837, to alleviate the need for small change during the Hard Times, Feuchtwanger created tokens made of argentan (commonly known as German Silver), an alloy made of copper, nickel, zinc, tin and trace metals. It was considerably cheaper to produce than the extraction of copper for the government minted half-cents and cents. The Hard Times, an especially rough period of economic recession following the dissolution of the Second Bank of the United States, was known for massive hoarding of small change. Much of the small change circulating at this time (roughly 1837-1844) was composed of clunky copper half-cents and cents privately produced. In 1837, Feuchtwanger presented his one cent coins to Congress for approval as legal coinage and a cheaper substitute for copper. This was probably the first attempt to circulate "nickel" coinage in the United States. Congress denied his request, but Feuchtwanger persisted in his production and circulation. Laws banning private coinage were not passed until 1864. Between 1837 and 1844 thousands of Feuchtwanger cents came out of his New York City pharmacy.

Great Original Brilliant Uncirculated Roll of Morgan Dollars. The Two ends showing are the obverse of a 1889, and the other end has a 'cc' Carson City Mint Reverse. The roll is held in an old "Steel Strong Automatic" Wrapper Dated from 1921. The Roll is also faintly stamped "Banker Trust of Philadelphia, Central City Office, Walnut Street at Juniper". I researched that name and the Bank closed in the post-Crash of '29 Depression period (my research showed that it failed on Dec 22, 1930). We received this incredible consignment from a private collector while at the Baltimore show. The consignee gave us his father's entire estate hoard of shotgun rolled coins. The Scovill Manufacturing Company of Waterbury, Connecticut produced this hard times token around 1841. The Scovill Company was established in 1802 as a button manufacturer and is still in business today. Scovill was an early industrial American innovator, adapting armory manufacturing processes to mass-produce a variety of consumer goods including buttons, daguerreotype mats, medals, coins, and transportation tokens. The Obverse Profile is an image of Lady Liberty facing left and the legend reads: E PLURIBUS UNUM/1841. On the reverse: The legend reads: MILLIONS FOR DEFENCE/NOT ONE CENT/FOR TRIBUTE.

To Quote David Hall: "The 1926-s is exceptionally rare in mint state condition and in Gem MS65 it is the rarest non-variety Buffalo nickel and as such it is one of the most important rarities of 20th Century numismatics. I have never seen or heard of a specimen grading above MS65. Strike can be somewhat of a problem with this issue, but not as much so as with teh 1920-s, 1923-s and 1925-s. It's not the strike, it's the fact that not many Gem examples exist at all. Luster is of the subdued semi-satiny type. Excluding the 1918/7-d overdate, this issue is THE KEY date to the Buffalo nickel series."

The Scovill Manufacturing Company of Waterbury, Connecticut produced this token in 1863. The Scovill Company was established in 1802 as a button manufacturer and is still in business today. Scovill was an early industrial American innovator, adapting armory manufacturing processes to mass-produce a variety of consumer goods including buttons, daguerreotype mats, medals, coins, and tokens. The obverse is an image of a George Washington equestrian statue. The legend reads: FIRST IN WAR, FIRST IN PEACE/1863. The reverse is a U.S. shield surrounded by four flags, wreath with one side of palm and one of oak. The legend reads: UNION FOR EVER. A very rare George Washington token.

Great Original Roll of Morgan Dollars. The roll is held in an old "Steel Strong Automatic" Wrapper Dated from 1921. The Roll is also faintly stamped "Banker Trust of Philadelphia, Central City Office, Walnut Street at Juniper". I researched that name and the Bank closed in the post-Crash of '29 Depression period (my research showed that it failed on Dec 22, 1930). The Two ends showing are the obverse of an 1889, and the other end has a 'cc' Carson City Mint Reverse. We received this incredible consignment from a private collector while at the Baltimore show. The consignee gave us his father's entire estate hoard of shotgun rolled coins. We have had great feedback on the rolls so far. The Two ends showing are the obverse of an 1895, and the other end has a 'cc' Carson City Mint Reverse. We received this incredible consignment from a private collector while at the Baltimore show. The consignee gave us his father's entire estate hoard of shotgun rolled coins. We have had great feedback on the rolls so far. According to David Hall: The 1925-D is very scarce in circulated grades and rare in mint state. In Gem condtition, it is the second rarest Denver Mint Buffalo of the 1920s after the 1927-D. Well struck examples can be found, but softness of strike on the Buffalo's horn and tail can also be seen on a significant number of mint state survivors. Luster is usually pretty good on this issue with a semi-frosty/satiny look.

In 1837 and again in 1857, financial crises caused loss of confidence in paper money and widespread redemption of currency in coin. Banks were soon forced to suspend specie payments, and tokens and fractional notes had to serve as smaller change. This Hard Times token depicts Lady Liberty on the obverse surrounded by a ring of stars, and the Centre Market building on the reverse. The reverse legend: CENTRE MARKET/14TH WARD/N. YORK/ACCOMODATION.
