ATTENTION COLLECTORS OF COLT U.S. MARKED, AINSWORTH INSPECTED REVOLVER: THE LAST AINSWORTH INSPECT Lot #354 (Sale Order 55 of 264) ATTENTION COLLECTORS OF COLT U.S. MARKED, AINSWORTH INSPECTED REVOLVER: THE LAST AINSWORTH INSPECTED U.S. COLT REVOLVER. Historically Important: The last Ainsworth inspected Colt U.S. Cavalry SAA Revolver known. Serial Number 14343 is a .45 caliber Revolver with a 7 1/2" barrel that was issued to the U.S. Cavalry in 1874 and inspected by Orville Ainsworth, the first principle sub-inspector for the military contract SAA Revolver. Ainsworth inspected SAA Revolvers in the serial number range 200 through 14343, making this the last Colt believed to be inspected by him. In a 1971 letter written by noted Colt authority, John Kopec, regarding this revolver, Mr. Kopec states, "your revolver still remains the highest recorded serial number of an Ainsworth gun." The numbers match on the frame, trigger guard, back strap and cylinder, although the cylinder and back strap numbers are light. The barrel has the standard script style address. The frame has the early 2 line, 2 patent dates and is U.S. stamped. The barrel has the early style italics address. The bore is very good for the age of the revolver. The grips fit very well but the cartouches have worn away. Ainsworth inspected revolvers are sought after by collectors but there is only one "last Ainsworth" ever made. This may be the only chance to own a truly one-of-a-kind Revolver. Mr. Kopec's Letter will accompany this .
