14 ANCIENT COINS in WOODEN DISPLAY BOX Lot #20 (Sale Order 20 of 365) A high-quality set. According to the enclosed Certificate of Authenticity, "This set is a unique collection of 14 genuine ancient coins, each from different periods and places that comprised the ancient Greek world. The collection was hard to assemble. Coins that make up this set were accumulated over a period of 20 years, purchased individually, and in small groups from scores of dealers and collectors over that period. As a result, only a small number of these collections were able to be made, and no two are exactly alike. The coins have all been inspected for quality and authenticity, expertly conserved and attributed to their respective civilizations and nations, then encapsulated in custom made archival materials and presented in a specially designed, handmade, hardwood and brass display case."

1895 MORGAN DOLLAR - PROOF - FINE DETAILS SCRATCHED - EXTREMELY RARE Lot #259 (Sale Order 259 of 365) EXTREMELY RARE and highly prized proof-only issue with only 880 produced. This coin has a unique history. The consignor's father worked for over 30 years at a brewery in Evansville. For a short time in the early 1960's, the brewery paid its employees in silver dollars, probably coinciding with the release of millions of silver dollars by the U.S. Treasury Department. It was in one of these pay periods that he received this coin. Although not a coin collector, he still did some research and appreciated the fact that this coin could be a true rarity. In the mid-60's, he asked a local coin dealer to come to his house and examine the coin to see if it was authentic. The dealer told him that it had the mint mark removed, but offered him $150 for it anyway. Hearing this, he reasoned that if the dealer was willing to pay that much, it had to be worth more. At the time, a real 1895-P was valued at $500 and up in the Red Book. He chose to hold onto the coin and not show it to anyone again, and he wrapped it in pink tissue and hid it away. About five years ago, after his father died, his son re-discovered the coin and contacted us to get it authenticated. We submitted it to PCGS and it turned out the be the real deal. At the time, the owner chose to hold onto it, as it had strong sentimental value. THIS IS THE FIRST TIME THIS COIN HAS COME TO MARKET. PCGS has graded it Fine Details, Scratch. There is a vertical scratch in front of Liberty's forehead, a few thin horizontal scratches across the cheek and neck, and a couple scratches on the reverse. None is particularly concerning. This coin may have been carried as a pocket piece or possibly found its way in circulation for a time, but it retains an attractive, original look and would be a once-in-a-lifetime acquisition and more than likely a solid investment.
