The ATTACK ON PEARL HARBOR: Strategy, Combat, Myths, Deception

Lot #9 (Sale Order 7 of 48)

Very good condition, hardcover. "The December 7th, 1941 attack on Pearl Harbor has been portrayed by historians as a dazzling success, “brilliantly conceived and meticulously planned.” With most American historians concentrating on command errors and the story of participants’ experiences, the Japanese attack operation has never been subjected to a comprehensive critical analysis of the military side of the operation. This book presents a detailed evaluation of the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor on the operational and tactical level."

Slats Rodgers and the Love Field Lunitics - AVIATION HISTORY - SIGNED by Author Slats Rodgers and the Love Field Lunitics - AVIATION HISTORY - SIGNED by Author

Slats Rodgers and the Love Field Lunitics - AVIATION HISTORY - SIGNED by Author

Lot #15 (Sale Order 13 of 48)

SIGNED by author Jim Gatewood, Very good condition, inscribed. "When Slats was 18 he lied about his age and got a job with the rail road. His strong will and keen mind enabled him to slug his way from yard-boy to engineer. The young soldier of fortune discovered he could make money faster hauling bootleg whiskey in the cab of his locomotive. At the end of World War I, Love Field became a Mecca for gypsy barnstorming pilots and a flying circus was formed called Slats Rodgers and the Love Field Lunatics. The circus was used as a cover for the delivery of his bootleg whiskey. In 1933, Roosevelt repealed the Volstead Act. The sixteen year window of time for bootleggers slammed shut. Mexico beckoned to Slats and he became a gun runner involved in a small revolution and later he left Mexico, a rich man. With the gold he brought out of Mexico he purchased an airfield in Mission, Texas and went into agro crop dusting business."

Tirpitz: The Life and Death of Germany's Last Super Battleship Tirpitz: The Life and Death of Germany's Last Super Battleship

Tirpitz: The Life and Death of Germany's Last Super Battleship

Lot #17 (Sale Order 15 of 48)

Very good condition hardcover. "The Germans, for their part, had learned not to pit their super battleships against the strength of the entire Home Fleet outside the range of protecting aircraft. Thus they kept Tirpitz hidden within fjords along the Norwegian coast, like a Damocles Sword hanging over the Allies’ maritime jugular, forcing the British to assume the offensive. This strategy paid dividends in July 1942 when the Tirpitz merely stirred from its berth, compelling the Royal Navy to abandon a Murmansk-bound convoy called PQ-17 in order to confront the leviathan. The convoy was then ripped apart by the Luftwaffe and U-boats, while the Tirpitz returned to its fjord. In 1943, the British launched a flotilla of midget submarines against the Tirpitz, losing all six of the subs while only lightly damaging the battleship. Aircraft attacked repeatedly, from carriers and both British and Soviet bases, suffering losses—including an escort carrier—while proving unable to completely knock out the mighty warship. Trying an indirect approach, the British launched one of the war’s most daring commando raids—at St. Nazaire—in order to knock out the last drydock in Europe capable of servicing the Tirpitz. Of over 600 commandos and sailors in the raid, more than half were lost during an all-night battle that succeeded, at least, in knocking out the drydock. It was not until November 1944 that the Tirpitz finally succumbed to British aircraft armed with 10,000-lb Tallboy bombs, the ship capsizing at last with the loss of 1,000 sailors."

Army of the Potomac: McClellan's First Campaign, March - May 1862 - CIVIL WAR

Lot #23 (Sale Order 21 of 48)

Very good condition, hardcover. "McClellan’s First Campaign, the 3rd volume of Russel Beatie’s masterful series, covers the pivotal early months of General George McClellan’s Peninsula Campaign through the siege of Yorktown, the pursuit toward Richmond, and the fighting at Williamsburg. As he did in his first two volumes, Beatie tells the story largely through the eyes and from the perspective of high ranking officers, staff officers, and politicians. This study is based upon extensive firsthand research (including many previously unused and unpublished sources) that rewrites the history of Little Mac’s inaugural effort to push his way up the peninsula and capture Richmond in one bold campaign. Crossing the Rhine: Breaking into NAZI GERMANY 1944 and 1945 Crossing the Rhine: Breaking into NAZI GERMANY 1944 and 1945

Crossing the Rhine: Breaking into NAZI GERMANY 1944 and 1945

Lot #25 (Sale Order 23 of 48)

Very good condition, hardcover. "From one of the world’s leading military historians comes a thrilling and richly detailed account of the two most critical offensives in World War II’s western theater after D-Day—the Allied airborne assaults on the Rhine. In September 1944, with the Allies still celebrating their success at Normandy and eager to finish the job, thirty-five thousand U.S. and British troops parachuted into Nazi territory in the Netherlands. The controversial offensive, code named “Operation Market Garden,” was conceived by British Field Marshal Bernard Montgomery to secure the lower Rhine—Germany’s last great natural barrier in the west—and passage to Berlin. Allied soldiers outnumbered Germans by two to one, but they were poorly armed against German Panzer tanks and suffered devastating casualties. After nine days of intense fighting, they were forced to retreat. Several months later, in March 1945, Montgomery orchestrated another airborne attack of the Rhine; this time they won and began their march into the heart of the Third Reich. Crossing the Rhine moves at a fast pace, delivers an innovative interpretation of the past, and forces us to ask ourselves just what it takes—in blood spilt, in lives lost—to win in war."

Lot #36 (Sale Order 34 of 48)

Missionary Travels And Researches In South Africa; Including A Sketch Of Sixteen Years Residence In The Interior Of Africa, And A Journey From The Cape Of Good Hope To Loanda On The West Coast by David Livingstone, Published by New York: Harper & Brothers, Publishers, 1858. (1858) Fair/Good condition with general wear. First American Edition of one of the most important nineteenth century accounts of African exploration. Livingstone describes his missionary activities and travels in South Africa from 1841 to 1853 and his first major expedition, the Trans-Africa journey of 1853-56. On this expedition he travelled from Linyanti to Loanda and from Linyanti to Quilimane. While exploring the Zambesi River, he discovered the famous Victoria Falls in November 1855. "The results in geography and in natural science in all its departments were abundant and accurate; his observations necessitated a reconstruction of the map of Central Africa. When Livingstone began his work in Africa the map was virtually blank from Kuruman to Timbuktu, and nothing but envy or ignorance can throw any doubt on the originality of his discoveries."

RARE Twelve Years Of a SOLDIER'S Life In INDIA (1860)

Lot #40 (Sale Order 38 of 48)

Twelve Years Of a Soldier's Life In India Being Extracts of From The Letters of The Late Major Hodson, by Hodson, (Major W.S.R,) Published by Ticknor & Fields (1860) good condition, there is some wear on the outer upper spine (see pic). "This is a biography of William S. R. Hodson who served as the leader of the irregular light cavalry in the Indian Mutiny in the 1850's. Commandant of Hodson's Horse, William was a controversial character who played the decisive & controversial role in the arrest of Bahadur Shah, King of Delhi, & the execution of his sons. The book consists of portions of letters written by Major Hodson while serving in India for twelve years from 1845 up until his death at Lucknow. It includes good accounts of Hodson's service during the Indian Mutiny and the Second Afghan War, and is the primary source of reference for Hodson's Horse. The book sheds some positive light on Hodson's career and contains a vindication from the attacks made by Mr Bosworth Smith in his 'Life of Lord Lawrence' and by Mr. Holmes. It has been hailed as one of the best of all Indian Army histories."
