Vernet and was a prolific sculptor and painter. Both religious and genre works survive. Crucifixion was likely commissioned for a church in Paris. Image of the crucifixion with a saturated and moody landscape behind. Jerusalem can be seen in the distance. Signed "Elmerich" at bottom left. Measures 5 feet 10.75 inches by 9 feet 2.25 inches. Canvas shows signs of age throughout and has been patched on back.

LARGE POLYCHROME WOOD CARVED PHARMACY GAPER Lot #5034 (Sale Order 34 of 470) American mid to late 19th century wood carved pharmacy gaper. Gapers originated in 16th Netherlands to advertise pharmacies to a largely illiterate population. This gaper takes the form of a "Moor" or African American with his mouth open displaying a pill on his tongue. A bandage is wrapped around the forehead and and neck. Features are exaggerated. Painting is chipping in areas but still maintains much of its original color.

US NAVAL ENSIGN RICHARD A BRECK PERSONAL LOG 1871 Lot #5205 (Sale Order 204 of 470) US Naval Ensign Richard A. Breck's personal maritime journal and naval log book, which describes his experience as a junior NCO in the South Atlantic Squadron, described are his voyages on both the U.S.S Lancaster since it was anchored at Rio De Janeiro, Brazil, as well as the U.S.S Portsmouth which he describes his time on sailing from Barbados to New York. Writing extends roughly to the middle of the pages, the hard covers bear deterioration consistent with the books' age. Paper bears legible text in cursive with foxing of paper and darkening of ink consistent with the age of of the item. Included is a handwritten summary and partial transcription in handwritten cursive on lined stationary.

ANTIQUE JAPANESE CARVED IVORY KATANA MARKET SCENE Lot #5337 (Sale Order 336 of 470) Antique Japanese Katana made with an intricately carved saya and tsuka made of elephant ivory. Top of the tsuka is a separate piece carved like a dragon's head, while the bottom of the saya is also a separate piece depicting the tail of the dragon. Between these two are a series of what appear to be market scenes. Blade has a faint hamon and is signed on the tang, which appears to have been both shortened and also cleaned. Blade is not mounted on the tsuka, which appears to not have any holes for mekugi to be inserted at all. Blade measures 37 inches in length not accounting for the curve. Ivory shows signs of significant age and is well over 100 years old. Blade is believed to date from the mid- to late- Edo period. No major chips or damage to the ivory, but some age cracking and discoloration. In very good condition overall. Cannot be shipped internationally. Plain nickel-plated hilt shows light surface wear to dove head pommel, plain knuckle-bow and crossguard with several spots of light lifting to obverse crossguard and obverse edge of knuckle bow. Black Bakelite grip is perfect showing only light surface wear with tight twisted wire wrap present. Plated, double-etched blade measures 33 inches in length grades EX++ showing only light surface wear and runner marks. Both obverse and reverse blade feature 13.75 inch long grey frosted, double-etched panels with only faint wear to the frosting. Obverse of blade features a floral motif with crossed cannon barrels and facsimile of a mounted artillery officer flanking the central raised inscription "Altmark. Feld-Art.-Regt No 40". Reverse blade features floral motif and horse heads flanking the central raised facsimile of a mounted artillery section with riders, cannoneers, caisson, and artillery piece. Red felt blade buffer pad is present. Dent-free steel scabbard retains approx. 95% of its original black enamel showing only light surface wear and minor crazing. This lot has a reserve.

WWII PEARL HARBOR MARINE DEFENSE BATALLION FLAG Lot #5354 (Sale Order 353 of 470) 48-Star "Bull Dog Bunting" stamped US flag. Size marked 5x8 feet. Along the hoist on the side bearing the manufacturer's stamp is stenciled in black "Dec 7, 1941". On the opposite side of the hoist is stenciled "Dec 7, 1941 US Marines Pearl Harbor First Defense Batallion" and the initials "R.H.". The flag in question is believed to have been flying at the Marine Barracks at Pearl Harbor when that base was struck by Japanese forces. After the attack it is believed that the flag was taken by an officer of the unit, possibly Robert Hanna who was awarded the Navy Cross for his actions on Wake Island, who also added the markings on the hoist to signify the significance of the item. Flag has a 1/2 inch diameter whole in the lower right as well as separation between the bottommost two stripes. Also some paint spatter and soiling overall. In otherwise very good condition. Also includes a length of braided cotton cord which was used to hoist the flag. Deemed authentic according to terms. Acquired from the veteran's son in Florida. This lot has a reserve.

WWII GERMAN THIRD REICH AWARD DOCUMENT LOT OF 6 Lot #5358 (Sale Order 357 of 470) Lot contains 6 documents for an individual German soldier from WWII named August Lemmerer of the 524th Infantry, later Grenadier, Regiment of the 297th Infantry Division. Includes one for the Kriegsweihnacht 1940, one for the awarding of the War Merit Cross 2nd Class in the field in August of 1941. The third is for the awarding of an Infantry Assault Badge, also in the field, on September 16th, 1942. The next two are for the awarding of the Eastern Front Medal on 18th December 1942, as well as a telegram to a Frau Elisabeth Lemmerer informing her of the award. The last document is for the awarding of the Iron Cross, 2nd class on August 1st, 1943, indicating that he was not captured with the majority of the division at Stalingrad. This last is signed by the divisional commander Friedrich-Wilhelm Deutsch. All in very good condition with minor folds and aging. All are rubber date stamped. Nickel-silver hilt fittings show surface wear/age patina to pommel, upper and lower ferrules, and crossguard with loss of plating to background of the brass pommel and crossguard swastika; green residue in recesses of crossguard feathering. Some corrosion on the tang which extends to the very bottom of the blade beneath the blue leather muffler pad. Transitional dark blue leather grip shows surface wear/scuffs and some missing and loose leather along seam. Blade is in VG+ condition showing surface wear/runner marks, minor gray speckling, and several tiny nicks to cutting edges. Blade has been retipped resulting in a 5/8 inch shortening and grinding marks to lower 4 1/2 inches of blade. This lot has a reserve.

Unadorned nickel-plated hilt fittings show light surface waer and no major lifting or damage. Black bakelite grip shows very light surface wear, but no cracks or chips and is complete with tight triple wire wrap. PLated double-etched blade grades EX++ showing light surfcae wear/runner marks and no lifting or peeling to plating and is complete with original brown leather blade buffer pad. Obverse blade features a raised floral motif, with a horse-drawn artillery piece being led by two mounted soldiers. Reverse blade features a long frosted panel with floral motif, stahlhelm with crossed swords and oak leaves, and dedication panel "U. Behetbauer 13.I. G. K. I. R. 62" Blade retains 99% of the frosted background finish on the blade panels as well as the laurel leaf motif on the blade spine. Dent-free, steel scabbard retains approximately 80% of the original black enamel showing uniform surface wear to both obverse and reverse. This lot has a reserve.

This WKC model Nr. 1022 aluminum sword features frosted aluminum hilt fittings showing faint wear to pommel and crossguard, with 100% the gold wash remaining on pommel and crossguard quillons. Blue leather grip shows minor wear and a few small nicks but no rips or tears, and are complete with double brass wire wrap. Plated blade measuring 28.25 inches in length grades EX++. Shows light surface wear/runner marks, but no grey shadowing, pitting, or nicks to cutting edge and is compelete with blue leather blade buffer pad. Reverse of blade is not waffenamt stamped. Dent-free scabbard shows some minor surface scuffing, but no rips or tears to the blue leather which matches the grip leather perfectly. Dent free upper and lower frosted aluminum scabbard fittings grade near mint, showing only minor surface wear, The lower fitting is missing one retainer screw and is slightly looose. The integral leather hanger grade EX++ showing only minor wear to leather with no rips or tears and no damage to the stitching. Very good aluminum example. This lot has a reserve.
