Remington Rolling Block Model 1 Shotgun Lot #258 (Sale Order 255 of 336) 16/20 gauge, 32" round barrel. Blued and case hardened finish, straight gripped-walnut stock with shotgun butt, smooth walnut forend. Standard three-line Remington address and patent markings on tang. Sources vary as to the period of production and number of these shotguns produced by Remington, but all agree production was very limited. One source even suggests that this particular variation was only produced for about one year. The guns were chambered to accept a 16 gauge glass shotgun shell or a 20 gauge paper shell.

G.P. Foster (1810-1874) manufactured the "Klein's Patent" needle guns around 1849 while operating his firm in Taunton, Massachusetts. A talented gunsmith, he would assist in the development of the Volcanic pistol and would manufacture arms such as the Porter turret rifle, Burnside carbine and Howard carbines. Condition: Good. Some oxidation to cleaned finish with some evidence of old removed pitting. Some parts of action appear missing such as firing pin and spring resulting in the bolt opening properly with latch but does not appear to close and fire normally. Several John Vincents were active in the gunsmithing industry between 1844-1900. These included a John Vincent in Cleveland, Ohio, as well as a John Vincent in Washington County, Ohio, who is recorded as being active and producing percussion firearms from 1844-1842, and was subsequently succeeded by his son upon his death in 1882. This arm is likely the work of the elder Vincent from Washington County. Condition: Fair. Barrel has a thin plumb patination with some thinning around sharp edges and stock bed. Grip shows typical scottish basket-weave motif with brass pins and bonnet with crossed swords. Reverse of blade shows Assaye battle honor with elephant, and Seaforth Highlanders gaelic motto " CUIDICH'N RIGH. " Obverse shows Edward VII (r. 1801-1910) cipher and crown, with address of " S.J. FILLIN/31.GERRARD ST/LONDON W. " Scabbard shows thistle motifs and stylized St. Andrew with cross. Scabbard has been fitted with modern cloth belt loop. Condition: Good.
