Barnett Commercial Enfield Artillery Carbine

Lot #442 (Sale Order 42 of 314)

.577 caliber, 22.75" barrel secured by two clamping barrel bands, no S/N. Blued and color case hardened finish, brass furniture, hardwood stock. Lock marked with a two-line sans-serif stamp BARNETT / LONDON.  Stock with BARNETT / GUNMAKERS / LONDON three line oval cartouche. Single Birmingham black powder proof and 25 gauge mark on breech. Three-leaf rear sight, fixed front sight, sling swivels, jag head ramrod. These commercial copies of the Pattern 1853 Artillery Carbine were produced in the latter half of the 19th century, primarily as trade guns by Barnett, who sold them to whoever was willing to buy these light, handy musketoons. They were made without the saber bayonet lug of the military version and the sans-serif lock marking is typical of the Barnett lock mark found on 1870s and 1880s era percussion trade muskets. This variant of the Enfield artillery carbine was not imported during the American Civil War.

Condition: Very good. Barrel with traces of blue, showing scattered surface oxidation. Clear markings, mechanically functional, very good bore. Stock with light handling marks.

Pattern 1853 Enfield Rifle Musket Pattern 1853 Enfield Rifle Musket

Pattern 1853 Enfield Rifle Musket

Lot #443 (Sale Order 43 of 314)

.58 caliber, 39.25" barrel retained by three clamping barrel bands, no S/N. Blued finish, brass furniture, walnut stock. Lock marked TOWER / 1861 forward of the hammer and with the British crown to the rear. Standard Birmingham commercial proof, view and definitive proof marks, with two 24 gauge caliber markings, indicating .58 caliber. An additional S.W. inspection is present at the breech as well. This mark is normally associated with Enfield that bear the Sinclair, Hamilton & Company inspection mark of a {crown} / SH / G# on the top of the comb, forward of the buttplate tang. In this case stock has been sanded and that inspection mark is not present. Top of nocksform marked with a fluer-de-lis maker's mark. Matching assembly marks on barrel, breech plug and and in barrel channel of stock. Retains the correct pattern rear sight, front sight/bayonet lug, sling swivels and an original ramrod. Includes an old snap cap, attached to the lower sling swivel.

Condition: Good. Retains some of the added brown finish, no original finish present. Barrel cleaned with light markings, mechanically functional, good bore that is moderated oxidized and lightly pitted the last 4"-6" nearest the muzzle. The lock appears to be a replacement, as the fit is poor and the lock is not assembly marked to the balance of the gun. Stock sanded with no visible markings, leaving some of the metal proud of the wood. A crack is present, running from the rear lock bolt to the barrel channel. There is also some minor wood loss under the lock.

U.S. Experimental Model 1918 U.S. Experimental Model 1918

U.S. Experimental Model 1918 "Liberty Bell" Helmet

Lot #525 (Sale Order 125 of 314)

Steel with  woven chinstrap, painted cloth sweatband, felt and steel liner suspension.  Olive drab paint with

Designed by United States Army Major James E. McNary as a replacement for the Model 1917.  1,000 to 2,000 models were manufactured in France for trials, where the helmet proved very unpopular with troops due to its relatively low degree of protection as well as displeasing aesthetics.  Two types of liners were utilized, one with a three-pad system similar to many contemporary European models and the other with the single liner band which this example exhibits.  Due to its unpopularity, the project was abandoned in 1920.

Condition: Good overall.  Some scratches to external and internal paint with some light rust to interior of shell.  Some flaking of finish to liner band.  Liner appears to be original with some fraying to edges of chinstrap.

Counterfeit Ridgon & Ansley Counterfeit Ridgon & Ansley

Counterfeit Ridgon & Ansley "Augusta" Revolver

Lot #528 (Sale Order 128 of 314)

.36 caliber, 7.4375" octagonal-to-round barrel, S/N 1670. Artificially aged patina on the meal, brass back strap, grip strap and triggerguard. Six-shot, single action percussion revolver with 12 stop slots. Top of octagonal barrel portion marked AUGUSTA. GA CSA. A fairly well-executed fraud that initially looks very much like a Rigdon & Ansley "Augusta" revolver. However, the font and style of the markings, particularly the serial numbers are not correct. A good representative example for a collector that cannot afford the $25,000 to $30,000 price tag of most authentic examples.

Condition: Good. Metal chemically aged and patronized with scattered old dirt, grease and oxidation. Markings unnaturally clear and crisp. Mechanically functional, poor bore is very dirty and heavily oxidized. Grip worn with chips and wood filler, an old repaired crack and moderate sanding.

Lot #596 (Sale Order 196 of 314)

Colt U.S. Model 1860 Revolver in Case Attributed to Private MIlton C. Grafly, Company H, 6th Pennsylvania Cavalry "Rush's Lancers"

.44 caliber, 8" round barrel, S/N 8533 (ca 1861).  Matching numbers.  Re-plated finish with cartouched one-piece walnut grips. Bottom of butt engraved in a stippled pattern "M.C. Grafly."

Raised by Colonel Richard H. Rush in Philadelphia, Montgomery, and Burke counties, the regiment was sent to Washington D.C. and was assigned to the Army of the Potomac.  Curiously, from its very beginning the regiment was fully armed with carbines and pistols, but rather a nine-foot Austrian pattern lance with a fearsome eleven-inch triangular blade, only twelve carbines being issued per company for the purpose of picket duty and skirmishing.  However, as could be expected, the weapon proved completely inadequate against even the most obsolete Confederate weapons and were abandoned after the Battle of Chancellorsville.

A Milton C. Grafly appears on the rolls of Company H,  6th Pennsylvania Cavalry, enlisting on September 21, 1861.  He is listed as being discharged on a surgeon's certificate, however the cause and date of his discharge are unknown.  Grafly apparently was subsequently employed by the Reading Railway for many years after his military service.

Condition: Finish has been refinished to a bright polish over old pitting and corrosion. Grips show some minor handling marks with a barely visible cartouche. Appears mechanically functional.  Bore is somewhat dark with some old fouling.
