About the late David Leigh Root:
Mr. David L. Root was well known at the highest levels of the artifact
collecting community as a discriminating collector of investment grade ancient relics. While Dave’s collection includes many types of
artifacts from flint arrowheads and knives to stone discoidals, axes and celts, his true collecting passion centered around collecting midwestern artifacts made from glacial slate. While Dave’s
passion for slate relics included the acquisition of a large number of exceptional bannerstones, atlatl weights and birdstones, Dave’s
collection truly centered around ornamental slate pendants and
gorgets.
Born in Toledo, Ohio, Dave went on to attended Hillsdale College in
Michigan, where he met his future wife Kay. Dave had a successful
business career, and was the CEO of Root Companies which specialized in outdoor advertising. Deciding to retire in 2000, Dave quickly focused his attention to building the Country’s largest collection of slate relics.
The collection of David L. Root has been featured in numerous
artifact publications, including the Overstreet Indian Arrowheads Price Guide (13th. Ed.), Collectors of Historic and Prehistoric Artifacts, and over 50 pages in Legends of Prehistoric Art (vol. II) were dedicated to featuring artifacts from this incredible collection.
While there is no doubt that Mr. Root had an incredible talent for seeking out and acquiring the rarest and finest artifacts; it was his meticulous research, documentation, and cataloging of every artifact in his collection that is truly amazing. Thankfully, Dave’s painstaking attention to the detailed recording of each relic’s previous collection history has allowed us to accurately pass forward this important information with each item to be auctioned from this truly impressive collection.
